My first of impression of Dr. Rumbaut was Mr. Enthusiasm. He is very upbeat and a genuinely nice guy. His staff was very friendly and very helpful. No questions were left unanswered. I had a lot of contact with the Physician's Assistant Olivia and found her to be so charming and caring. I could not have gone to a better surgeon or a better hospital.
I cannot say enough great things about Dr. Rumbaut. He is friendly, funny, sincere and very knowledgable. Just the fact that he has done more surgeries (3500+ to date) than any other Dr. in the western hemisphere made me feel very good. He is living proof that the band works (since he has one) and that he believes in what he is doing 100%.
His office as well as the San Jose Hospital were beautiful, his staff was friendly. Post op instructions were printed out and easy to read/understand.
The one and only complaint I had, is that I felt in my opinion that I needed stronger meds for pain management than I was given. Luckily I had brought my own from the states and was able to take it by the morning of day 3. The first two nights were pretty uncomfortable for me though.
Overall, I am very satisfied and would highly recommend him to others.
My first impression of my surgeon was very positive. He is a warm, engaging man. Over the seven years and two surgeries that he has done for me I would say he has consistently been the same person. His staff are extremely helpful and professional.
Dr. Rumbaut will give excellent pre and post surgical care along with his staff. You will see him or talk with him at least 1-2x per day while in Mexico. He requires a full 7 day stay after the surgery so he can give followup care and be sure everything is going well before traveling home. He has a nutritionist on staff that meets with each patient and gives a little booklet of what to eat and the plan for you.
Dr. Rumbaut will talk with each patient about the risks of surgery as well as the benefits of the surgery. He is tops in his field, and surrounds himself with staff that equal his competence, professionalism and kindness. I have never been treated more kindly or with better care in my life.
The down side of Dr. Rumbaut's practice is that it is generally far away from patients from the US, and it can be hard to reach him if you have a problem. He does call back but it may take a day or two.

Dr. Rumbaut is a very skilled, caring surgeon. He is well known worldwide and has done more than 3400 lapband surgeries. He called me on his dime and spoke at length about the band, its complications, my personal health history, and his own experience with the lapband and his weight loss. I was able to schedule my surgery when it worked with my schedule. He made my hotel and transportation arrangements himself. His office staff speakes great english. The Hospital was a large teaching institution and I received excellent care. Dr. Rumbaut visited me at the hotel after I was discharged from the hospital and even had the hotel staff go to the pharmacy for me. I would rate Dr. Roberto Rumbaut a 10, without a doubt!
My first impression of him was that he was very professional and ran a top notch establishment. My impression never changed during my session or procedure. The hospital was nicer than any of the ones that I have stayed in the States with the hard-wood floors and beautiful tiles. The office staff was pleasant and helpful. There really wasn't anything specific I didn't like. I was a bit sqeamish going through the procedure alone, but they made me feel a lot better by checking on me quite often. (I wish I had spoke more Spanish!!!) He empahsized aftercare, but I am not sure how that will follow-up here in the States. They have a group of surgeons that provide after care in the states, but I have not scheduled an appointment yet. He addressed all the risk of surgery including telling me of patients that had slippage and erosions. Overall a well known top notch surgeon with great facilities. Both surgical competence and bedside manner was great!
I have spoken on the phone with Dr. Rumbaut. He was positive and reassuring. His statistics(which he shared freely) are excellent.I would not want surgery from a person who did not "see" me. More after surgery.
Later- Dr. Rumbaut is a cheerful, unpretentious man with a love of people. He has a lap band himself and so has great insight. His office is full of "fat art", which is fun and beautiful. He has a toilet designed for super-super obese people. His staff is cheerful and helpful. They have always answered my questions promptly, although I live in near Seatle and communicate by email. I watched him do a fill under flouro on a friend, and he really is an expert.
Dr. Rumbaut is very kind and knowledgeable. He answered all of our questions. His staff is so kind! In the bariatric program I was in here in the states, I felt the staff was mean, making me qualify myself to see if I "deserved" WLS, talking down to me, making me feel stupid. You will not have any of that at Dr. Rumbaut's. Every member of his staff and residents treated both myself and my husband with respect. All risks of surgery were discussed, aftercare is up to you, no matter where you have surgery! You can have online visits with the nutritionist from Dr. Rumbaut. I felt really good about my decision from the minute I met him and his staff! Unfortunately he was not able to visit me while I was in the hospital, and that I will admit, bothered me. Then I realized, that's not really anything new, ever try to get ahold of a surgeon in the states? Dr. Rumbaut did come visit me in the hotel after I got discharged. His residents visited me twice per day while in the hospital, once per day while at the hotel.
My first impression of Dr. Rumbaut was wonderful, he is a real person and treats you with respect and dignity. My impression has not changed, he truly is a wonderful and caring individual. Dr. Rumbaut's staff was great, Doralisa is a class act, she and her boyfriend visited me in the hospital as I traveled to Mexico alone and was having a "pity me day". I feel Dr. Rumbaut addressed all aspects of the surgery and surgical risks and also stressed a good aftercare program. I am currently under the care of my pcp in the U.S. I would rate Dr. R and his team with a big A+. I could not have asked for a better surgical team not to mention, caring, compassionate and did I mention not to hard to look at either! The surgical competence, bedside manner, professionalism and everything else is far better than any American Dr. I have ever encountered. I would highly suggest anyone considering surgery to contact Dr. Rumbaut. I would go back in a heartbeat!!
The whole Monterray esperience ROCKED! I would have loved to have some angel Insurance company pick up the whole $$tab...but this was the best alternative if I had to pay for it myself.
Rumbaut and his young assistant Dr. Gonzalez absolutely gave me all the time and attention I needed. Upscale all the way including the TOWN< The Hospital, the whole environment. They were kind to me as well as my DkindaH Don and so patient....absolutely NOT typical US Surgeon! The hospital he operates at is the University teaching hospital and it is State of the Art. My private suite was incredible, although I've heard just the private rooms themselves are nice.
My Spanish is pretty hysterical I discovered when trying to talk! Fortunately I was so terrible at it, whether we were shopping or doing something medical, there seemed to always be someone around to come to my rescue!
Regarding the Risks of surgery: When I explained to him that really explicit medical pix didn't bother me...he showed us 3 clinical examples of erosion ( a rare but real complication of banding) and described the circumstances. His depth of expirience is awesome. He has a web site www.gastricband.com and HAS A LAP BAND himself for over 5 years....Need I say more? I chose this doctor as the best in North America.
Downers... mild but : What I would see as a negative is of course the language issues if you are hopelessly MONO lingual as me, but everyone is rather used to that. I also think the concept of getting follow up fills will be a bit of an issue, although I'm not had to deal with that yet. I think so little of US bariatric docs for the most part that I assume in my personal opinion they will be their usual money grubbing selves and extort additional $$ for fillings since they didn't get the Big Profit of the initial Surgery.
