I first met Dr. Rumbaut the day before my surgery, shortly after I arrived in Monterrey, Mexico. He impressed me as a very caring doctor who took a genuine interest in his patients and in making them feel at ease. Even though several of his phones and pagers were buzzing (he's obviously a very busy man), he ignored all of the distractions (didn't even look at his caller ID!) and concentrated on me and answering my questions. He even provided his personal cell phone number to his patients in case they needed to ask him something for the duration of the stay in Mexico. I think the man is amazing, one of the pioneers in bariatric surgery, and would recommend him to anyone who has to pay for their surgery out of pocket.rnrnHis entire staff was friendly and very knowledgable. Everyone I spoke to, from the receptionists to the nutritionists and the other doctors on staff, was willing to answer questions and help out in any way they could. They all provided phone numbers and email addresses, and repeatedly told the patients to contact them with any questions, at any time. rnrnThe only thing I don't like about Dr. Rumbaut is that he is in Mexico, and I can't go hug him every day! This doctor could work anywhere in the world, but chose to work in Monterrey to help patients from the US and Canada who couldn't wait for their insurance to cover the surgery (and for those with no insurance). He is sincere in his desire to help as many people as he can, and he and his staff provide a TON of information on before-care and after-care. There is a structured after-care program, and his patients all have access to the nutritionalists for life. All of the risks were clearly explained, and all questions answered honestly. I have not found any of the information given to me to be false or misleading. rnrnThe only language barrier I ran into was with a couple of the overnight nurses at the hospital, but the doctor's office provides all of the patients with a list of Spanish phrases that came in very handy. The care I received at the hospital was at least equal to, if not better, than any care I've received in a US hospital. I did try to learn a bit of Spanish before I went, and that came in helpful when I went out shopping a couple of days after surgery. rnrnMy only real complaint I have about the entire experience was regarding the hotel that the patients stay in. The beds, while very comfortable the first night there (pre-surgery), were extremely high and difficult to climb up into after surgery. There were also several bus loads of children staying there that ran around the halls at all hours and would carom off of people in the hall ways and out by the pool. The hotel staff was extremely friendly though, and willing to help out as much as they could. Request a fridge in the room immediately if you're going though - it would be nice if those were automatically provided for the bariatric patients, as the doctor gives you a large box of protein drinks/Crystal Light, etc. for the couple of days after surgery you're in the hotel. Having to repeatedly get ice and keep stuff in the bathroom sink got a little frustrating, but at least it guaranteed me a walk a couple of times a day. rnrnI do know that 2 of the other women who had the RNY surgery the same day I did had a couple of problems, but I can't speak for them. I don't know if the problems stemmed from any fault of the doctor or staff, or from bad luck and the ordinary risks of having surgery and being overweight. I will encourage them to post their own experiences here. rnrnOverall, I would recommend Dr. Rumbaut and his staff to anyone. I did go by myself and was never once lonely or scared to be alone. The staff makes regualr trips to the hotel, and patients are provided with contact numbers to call at any time, day or night. Dr. Rumbaut's surgical competence is beyond expectations, and so is his bedside manner. He will remain in my prayers forever, and I just can't thank him enough.
There is not enough space to express how wonderful Dr. R is. He was so professional and had a great personality. My daughter who is a RN went with me and she was very impressed with how we were treated and how the doctors there did not have a god complex and were so down to earth and helpful. He could not have been any nicer and more attentive. They covered everything and I felt so well informed and it helped to make me feel easy about what I was about to face. I would recomment Dr. Rumbaut to anyone and know that I would not have to worry about what would happen to them. His staff also are very polite and well informed and so willing to help. I can not say enough about the whole experience. You could never get that kind of treatment in the States, if I could I might (might) not mind the prices here.
When we arrived in Monterrey we were wisked away for some pre-op testing and then to meet Dr. R. My first physical meeting with him was brief and mostly consisted of seeing him flying out the door to do a surgery. He assured me he'd be seeing me in a bit. Meanwhile, Dr. Lizcelly showed me back and we had a nice chat about the procedure, eating habits, etc... It took quite a while for Dr. R to come back, it turns out the surgery had a complication and took about an hour more than expected. Overall you get the feeling that time is just a suggestion, after all, ha. After waiting for a couple of hours, it was finally time to meet with my surgeon. My first impression of him was very good. He was nice, caring and not condesending. We talked about the surgery and we were out of there, he promised he wouldn't keep me waiting the next morning! rnrnI suppose he didn't, I don't really remember much about the time frame but my husband said he talked with him just a couple hours later and that everthing went fine. rnrnThe one thing I didn't really enjoy was the language barrier between the nurses and ourselves. I kept trying to get across to them that I wanted to be able to walk a little but was told no. They were never rude or impolite though. When Dr. Gonzales came in the next morning he was shocked I'd not been out of bed and asked me why! I wanted to know the same thing! I was extremely worried about complications and I know that walking eases some of them! I will say that for the most part any request we had was taken care of in a timely manner by the hospital staff.rnrnOver all, I had a good experience. I would go back to Dr. R if I had to do it again. Having a doctor come and check on me everyday after surgery, even in the hotel, was reassuring. That would never happen in the states.rnrnOver all, I'd say he's a great surgeon, the hospital in Monterrey is very nice, and his staff is quite helpful.
Very Friendly.rnEspecially love his surgeon in training, Dr Gonzales.rnThis Dr is striving to be the best in the business, and even though some of the hospital staff may falter at being on top of things 24/7 during recovery, the Dr's staff is always there to check on things and try to take care of the patient during every aspect of the visit to Mexico and during the surgery.
I had surgery with Dr. Rumbaut on April 10, 2007 and have had great results. My stay in Monterrey was enjoyable and the office staff went out of their way to make sure I was well cared for during the process. I am having my first fill this week and found the aftercare program was good, but I may need to locate a local person to followup with monthly. The diet aspect is still a problem for me and I feel I got some conflicting information during my first visit. I would recommend Dr. Rumbaut to anyone, he was outstanding in placing my band, but would recommend a local doctor for followup care for patients who need some additional assistance with diet and food choices.
My sister was banded 7 years ago by Dr Rumbaut. Dr. Rumbaut and his whole staff have truely fine tuned the process (according to my sister). Dr Rumbaut has performed well over 4500 lapband surgeries and is very down to earth and truely interested in the well fair of his patients. In addition Dr Rumbaut has been banded himself and is fully aware of the needs of his patients.
