I was forewarned of Dr. B-C so I went into my first consultation with low expectations of him. Even with that, I was fairly disappointed.
Yes I did feel as if he was a robot explaining this procedure for the umpteenth time. Asking him a question in the middle of his little presentation I was made to feel like an idiot for interrupting.
My fears are of dying from this and I did bring up the subject to him. In the three years he has consecutively performed this surgery on about 1,000 people, supposedly he has only lost two female patients. What I didn't like is that he blamed them for their own deaths because they didn't listen to the symptoms of their bodies or follow his aftercare program.
The only thing I liked is that he seemed confident and knowledgable of the surgery. I just didn't like his arogance in talking about it!
Also, for those of you out there just coming into the Bariatric Treatment Center for your very first consultation with your surgeon...PLEASE BE FOREWARNED that you are going to have a hard time switching surgeons before coming into the center for the first time!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I were you, I would read ALL the comments of every BTC surgeon and make your choice that way PRIOR to going to the clinic for the first time. If I would have known now what I did know then, I think I'd have a better outcome of my case.
I like Dr. B-C, don't get me wrong here, but if I had the time to research other surgeons and pick the best one prior to my first consultation, I would have chosen a different surgeon.
Good Luck to all of you still trying to make the decision to go through with this!
I was not impressed by Dr. Batay-Csorba the first time I met him. But he's an Ok Dr. The staff at BTC are in the most part very friendly but there are a few who are not. Alot of the staff that I met the first time I went there who were really nice to me are no longer working there. The staff at the hospital in Addison where my surgery was performed were extremely friendly and attentive. I took alot of time to study up on this surgery before I decided to do it and I knew it was my last resort at loosing weight. I was of course scared but wanted it more than anything and fought for 2 years with 2 different Ins. Co's and kept getting denied so I joined BC/BS and they approved my surgery the first time. Thank God for them. I was informed of all the risks involved in this surgical procedure and knew all I needed to know before I went into the hospital but I kind of knew what to expect as I had had 5 major surgeries previous to this and any surgical procedure has risks. I was very lucky as I had no complications from this surgery and haven't to this day. I have heard about others who have had severe complications but I am one of the lucky ones who survived unharmed.
If you are contemplating this surgery make sure it is what you really want to do. It is not a magical weight loss solution. The weight doesn't come off overnight and takes time and you have to follow the aftercare program. There are times where I wish I could eat more at a time but that's what got me where I was in the first place. This is just another tool that has been provided for us in our battle against obesity and it is all up to you as to how you want to use it. If you abuse it it won't work for you. But if you follow the instructions and take care of yourself it will work.
My first impression of Dr.Batay-Csorba was great. He was VERY informative about the surgery and was quite up-front about risks and benefits. I had a whole small notebook full of questions and he sat back, relaxed, and answered them all. He was also very nice about answering my partner's questions.
The office staff at BTC in Ann Arbor was great. Very kind, patient, and responsive to phone calls.
I don't have anything yet that I liked least.
Dr.B-C emphasized that aftercare was the most important thing. He stressed that most people who have problems with vomiting and such have them because they don't follow the directions of the nutritionist and surgeon about what to eat. He emphasized that the surgery is not the end, but a means to an end, and that it will change my life.
I'll add more post-op.
So, here I am post-op and still pleased with my surgeon. I saw Dr. B-C every day that I was in the hospital and he was more than willing to answer questions. There were also plenty of support staff on hand to answer questions both at the hospital and after I went home. I've spoken with a nurse, a nutritionist, and the internist that I saw pre-op and in the hospital. They're all very available by phone.
I met with Dr. Batay-Csorba, and my first impression with him, was that he was very informative, serious, explained all risks of surgery, and was very stern with me when finding out i was a smoker. I have not had a cigarette since i left his office!!
The staff at BTC is top notch! I have spoken with Loretta many times on phone, she has been extremely pleasant every time, and really went to bat for me in trying to get a surgery date before my insurance deadline. I cannnot thank her enough.
I also met with Melanie Edwardtowski, and she made me feel very comfortable, and answered all questions i had. Very, very pleasant. I could tell she really enjoyed her job.
I will be back after surgery to further update my surgeon information, and how procedure went. I am starting to get a little nervous, guess that is to be expected.
I saw him on 8-30 for my consultation and I feel very confident about him as my surgeon. I've read that several people perceive him to be cold and mechanical, and I did find this to be the case to a small degree. But, overall I think he was very informative and helpful. I will update this after my surgery.
05-5-00 I am now a little over 5 weeks postop and I wanted to share how wonderful I think Dr. Batay-Csorba is. I had a minor complication a few weeks after surgery (abscess of incision) and had to go back to see him. He was very caring and understanding. He had to open the area of the abscess and drain it, causing me quite a bit of pain, and he apologized profusely for having to hurt me. I love Bariatric Treatment Center and Dr. Batay-Csorba!
I saw Dr. Batay-Csorba (Dr. B-C) on 4/21/00. I was impressed with his surgical knowledge and the fact that he presented everything in layman's terms and used pictures, diagrams and written material for reference. I am an RN, but my husband appreciated the layman's terms. I had FOUR pages of typewritten questions to ask him at the end and he was more than willing to sit back and answer them. He was very open regarding the risks of surgery told me things that can help to descrease the risks of complications.
I met with Dr Batay in 10/99 to seek information about this surgery. Met with him on a Friday about 4/30 he was very pleasant reserved and to the point. His staff I felt rushed us out the door(went w/another friend) I remember was him stating my goal wt would be 132# I couldn't believe it!!couldn't even imagine what size 132# would be, still having touble. Being an RN I have done lots of reseach on the Dr & Addison Hosp. Have heard NOTHING but GOOD REPORTS... Had a revisit 4/17 for surgery on 5/4 surgery came & went very nice quiet bedside manner, Dr Poplowski covered on the weekend very funny nice concerned man. No problems w/ either physician.
He was pretty matter of fact..kind of felt this was the millionth time he's gone over all the info...I have only meet him once, but others have told me he's one of the best. The office staff was pleasant. He went over my restrictions and was straight forward but I liked this since I like to know all the facts first.
I was very impressed with Dr. Batay-Csorba's knowledge and skills. I had my first consult with him in the Ann Arbor office and it was during that visit that he took his time and answered all of my questions and listened to the concerns that I had. I then saw him the day of my surgery when he came to my room prior to surgery to explain to myself and my family what was about to take place during surgery, recovery, follow up, etc. My family stated that they were impressed when he came out after surgery to inform them of what he did and how he felt surgery went. I then saw him every morning when he came in to check on me, then he would answer all my questions and offer advice for me. During the day as I was walking in the halls if we passed he would offer kind words and encourgement. I think he is a great doctor.......
Well I was so scared when I went in there that I hardly remember my first impression. I didn't see much of him afterwards though. When my surgery was done another doctor came in and talked to me and handled my problems. The staff at the hospital I was at were all wonderful to me. I had a few complications and if they had not been so supportive, my whole experience would've been awful. They went into great detail about my aftercare. I was really pleased with the information they gave me and numbers to call if I needed additional info after I went home. I really didn't see my surgeon, but the other doctors there and staff were great.
