I met with Dr. Overcash...3 words..I LOVE HIM! I had all my questions written down, what he didn't answer in his initial speech, he did answer without hesitation. The office staff was wonderful, those ladies work so hard. He/they explained everything, I was totally prepared and expect a smooth transition into surgery.
Wow... what can I say .. Dr. Overcash is AWESOME!!! After reading every possible comment about him on this website -- I knew exactly was to expect -- I even told my husband to expect the question "are you prepared to take care of the children if your wife dies?" I also expected the "no bed side manner" but I got exactly the opposite. We meet for about half an hour and he was soooo personable!! He had both my husband and myself laughing so hard we were crying!! He was the one that called me back to the room just like everyone else has said. He weighed me (307) down 8 lbs since my last doctors visit. We then sat in a room and he went over the surgery, what to expect; we discussed my kids and the effect this would have on my family, friends, co-workers. He also reviewed the nutritional class that his patients are required to take. We talked about possible side effects, blood clot, leaking, etc. My overall experience with Dr. Overcash rating him on 1 to 5 (5 being the best) he gets ***** (5 Stars)!!! The office staff was very nice...the only advice I would give other people is to have some patience. The office is very busy -- as long as you have patience all your needs will be met! At the end of my visit with Dr. Overcash he asked me to see Patrice for her to review my next steps, I stood at the window and realized she was very busy (waiting room was packed full of people, phones ringing off the hook) so I took a seat -- she knew I was ready to be checked out-- about 10 min later she called me up to review my packet and she thanked me for being patient. During those 10 min I saw patients just standing at the window -- waiting for her -- and I could tell it was causing some stress -- so just be prepared to be patient -- give yourself plenty of time for the appointment. My appointment time was 9:00 (i was 7 min late) Dr Overcash saw me at 10:00 and I left the building at 11:00 - I drove from Jacksonville (2 hrs away) for my appointment. Like I said give yourself plenty of time and be sure to call for directions prior to your appointment - finding their building is a little tricky -- Overall his office staff receives ***** (5 stars) Thank you Patrice and Dr. Overcash for everything!!
Dr.Overcash is very upfront, no beating around the bush. He tells you like it is.. I like the fact that he is honest. He doesn't sugar coat anything. He really makes you think about your decision.. The office staff have been really helpfull. Madeline has been great. I haven't had surgery yet but I would recommend Dr.O. I did love the fact that he comes out to the waiting room to get you his self......
Dr. Overcash is a straight forward No-Nonsense type of guy. He does not perform Bariatric surgery for vanity reasons and lets you know that immediately.
Office staff is usually friendly, although they seem a little like you're just a 'number' at times. I think it's because they have so much paperwork to deal with from insurance and HIPPA regulations, etc.
He tells you that it must be a lifetime decision and one that you are prepared to follow the guidelines for and if you don't things will not go right.
He definitely addresses the risks of surgery and makes you write a letter and have a family member explaining that you understand the risks and reasons why you wnat surgery.
I'd give him a 9 1/2 out of 10. He does not have a great bedside manner and does not want excuses. After surgery, he expects you up from sunrise to sundown. You must be sitting up in a chair or walking the entire day. I had been up the day after surgery from before 6am and tried to lay down around 1pm (my nurse even verified that I had walked the halls 8 times and that she helped me out of bed due to IV and NG tube and he did not want to hear that answer.).
Follow ups with Dr. Overcash are easy as long as you are doing the right things. Making sure you are eating protein, taking vitamins, exercsing and drinking water.
My first impression of Dr. Overcash was fairly laidback, informal, factual and a bit of a sense of humor. From these observations, I felt he was extremely experienced and comfortable doing open RNY's and had been through virtually every condition associated with obesity & WLS. My impression to date remains the same except I have gained an added respect for his skill as a surgeon.
Dr. Overcash's staff is efficent, polite and hardworking. Appointment dates are given with reasonable time frames. They are informed of what is neccessary to submit for insurance purposes.
There is nothing I dislike about Dr. Overcash. I want a expert surgeon who knows how to handle my case, not a new best buddy.
Future patients should know that they must really want and be committed to the lifesytle changes & conditions of WLS before meeting with Dr. Overcash. He will not talk you into it.
All risks of surgery, complications and side effects of surgery were discussed during initial consultation.
Dr. Overcash was exactly what I was looking for in a surgeon. I could not have made a better selection.
I met with Dr. Overcash yesterday (Aug. 4th). I have read other patients say that his office is packed. They were right! I had seen him popping his head out calling patients in but thought he was the nurse. He is very matter of fact in explaining everything. Now I have a lot of paperwork to do and have all the tests done. I hope both of my insurance will cover it. Neither shows an outright rejection.
7-29-03 I have switched to Dr. Overcash from Dr. Dennis Smith. Got frustrated with Dr. Smith's office staff. They were inept at handling the insurance issue, lied to me about when they filed letter, and in general made a trying process MORE difficult. On the other hand I was VERY impressed with Dr. Overcash, his bedside manner is great and he is very honest and forthright. I had a much better feeling of confidence with Dr. Overcash. I think Dr. Smith is probably a fine surgeon but his enire staffneeds to be fired and a new one hired. My surgery date with Dr. Overcash is August 13th.
Dr. Overcash's office was busy the first day I went there. I thought he was a nurse, in scrubs. Immediately, I considered him the unusual, non-conventional type Doctor. I was right.
He took another patient and her husband in with me since I was alone. I was a little troubled about that but didn't react. I like my privacy.
The Dr.was blunt and straight to the point. He wanted to know if I had a will and the children taken care of should I pass away. After that was clarified, he explained the important information. I didn't have many questions because I had done homework.
I threw in a slight joke and he does have a sense of humor and a warm heart. He concentrates more on getting his job done. If you want someone with a great bedside manner, that isn't Dr. Wm. Overcash. I believe he will do a great professional job on my gastric by-pass, though, and that is what's important.
I only had one major concern. I feel he needed to take more personal time with me. He seemed to be in an accelerated mode and needed to slow down. This could aid in his getting to know each patient personally. We obese people all have individual lifestyles. Don't throw everyone into the same category.
Jennifer and Patrice have done a great job with the paperwork. Patrice is very busy so I had to push the issue of her getting my paperwork to the insurance company. She was sure it would take at least 4 to 6 weeks but as soon as she got all the documents to them, they gave her an authorization number. It only took two weeks and two days. Amazing, isn't it? The approval from the insurance company only took ONE DAY! I hope the surgery goes very well. Will update more after July 15th.
I met Dr. Overcash in May, having researched him on the internet, read impressions from other patients on his site, and reviews on other sites, even consulted my local psychic. Consensus is that he is an excellent surgeon. He clearly addresses the risks of surgery upfront. Also, I have been told that he works very quickly, which is a good thing since I imagine I am impatient even when I am unconscious.
His office staff has been kind and helpful; they seem to have some appreciation of how vulnerable one becomes when she decides to embark on yet one more attempt at weight loss. If nothing seems to be happening, it is really important to follow up with a phone call; I went six weeks without hearing anything from them, only to find out when I finally did call that a long intake form I faxed them did not go through. Once that was taken care of, everything moved quickly.
Being a fat person, I am very defensive and skeptical about the medical profession; I tend to postpone as long as possible doctor's visits mostly because I don't want to be weighed and hear the lecture about dieting. I sensed none of that with Dr. Overcash. I also talked with several of his patients in the waiting room who had varying lengths of recovery time. All had only positive things to saw about him. I anticipate doing the same after my own surgery.
