I had investigated this procedure prior two years before I made the final decision to have the Surgery. I started doing my research end of 2003 my Mother was diagnosed with terminal Cancer in 2004. I was taking care of her and after she died in August of 2004 I continued to research but I wasn't in the frame of mind to have anything done. In 2005 I wen to my Primary Doctor and told him I wanted this and what steps do I need to do. I have to start with some type of weight loss plan to show my Insurance Company that I was trying on my own to loose weight. Fortunately I had medical insurance that I was paying for and after almost one year and half and plenty of documentation and necessary steps I was approved! I worked with a gentleman that had gone to Dr. Overcash and had his Surgery. I wanted to know personally what his outcome was?? When my daughter and I first met Dr. Overcash my daughter said "Mom you may die"? as Doctor Overcash had advised. He doesn't pull any punches! He is in a serious business and he doesn't have the time to waist for people who are just playing games! Today seven years later I "Truly" "Thank Him" He saved my "Life" and gave me more time to Live! I was close to 400 pounds before the surgery. I still am trying to get rid of approx 40lbs. I was down 20 and then menopause hit. I lost my job after the surgery and since that time I haven't had medical insurance long enough to get a Tummy Tuck which I do need! Without Dr. Overcash I would be dead from so much weight and health problems that I was having. I followed what her told me and the classes on what I was to eat and I am not perfect but I listened and followed what he said. I admit I didn't have any support classes which I did want but I came from Orlando to Ocala for Dr. Overcash and I am very glad that I did. I am sorry to hear that he isn't practicing because I feel he is a Great Surgeon! My sister is a Nurse and she went with me to the hospital for the surgery and she had worked over the years with many Doctors and she liked Dr. Overcash. My sister also works in the Insurance End and she reviews Doctors charts and Doctor Overcash overall was and is a very good Doctor! In order to receive the results you want you have to take responsibility and do what the Doctor says. We are creatures of habit and we want to do it our way! If so this surgery isn't for you! You have to change inside and out and it has to come from within! You can't make any Doctor responsible for ones own actions! We got ourselves in this position and we have no one to blame other than ourselves.. We can look at the good and bad in every situation! Nothing in Life is Perfect! We have to be willing to take the risk no matter what that may be! Dr. Overcash can plant the seed! We have to water the pant and feed the soil! When it comes right down to it we have the power within! I Thank Doctor Overcash for doing his part! Without him I wouldn't be able to tell my story. We all have one and I believe mine had a "Happy Ending" I will forever will be greatful for Doctor William Overcash.
I had open RNY on May 24, 2002 by surgeon Dr. William Overcash in Ocala, Fl. It has been 10 yrs. now and for the weight -loss aspect of it , i would do it all again. Just to be able to bend over and tie shoes or cross my legs appropriately has been a blessing. I recently came back on this site to look up Dr.Overcash to find that many patients of his are completely dissatisfied with their surgeries and the outcome of it. Many different things play part in the negative and positive outcome of any persons GBS. I have been extremely self disciplined with eating and drinking since post-op day one and have nothing but good top say about Dr. Overcash. It is up to each individual to do everything the right way after these types of surgeries to get the best outcome and long-term weight loss goal that they want.
This degenerate is a butcher,a hack,a killer who has been suspended MANY times, and is currently kicked out of the profession. It looks like this is it for him,and he will hopefully never be reinstated!
He misplaced a woman's stomach and closed her up! He has killed patients, nicked bowels, left surgical instruments in patients....you name it!
The man is a filthy criminal. Even his wife is suing him.
If you want to die, risk living the rest of your life with tubes, colostomy bags, breathing tubes and live in a wheel chair, you have found your surgeon.
This pig did most of his work at the filthy Munroe Regional Hospital,a haven for 5th rate doctors.Even there he was suspended multiple times, and finally kicked out for good.
Stay clear of Munroe, and Overcash's idiot sidekick Dr.Hoddenott.Hoddenott is a flunky from Canada who could not even pass his US exams! He even hired the disgusting OR nurse and credit card cheat Madeline.AVOID THIS LOT AT ALL COSTS!
But the show continued! Overslash actually went to The Villages,to prey on unsuspecting seniors.
The jig is up,however,as he is suspended again!
Very sad that such a skilled surgeon..has gone to "waste" and is no longer practicing. Although he was not liked by many due to his blunt and direct ways of dealing with ppl who were all so willing to make excuses than deal with their failure...he was still an amazing surgeon and it's sad that he is no practicing.
1) Quiet man..reserved. Not to talkative, but if you ask questions he will respond. Straight forward about surgery.
2) Same impression but am not as nervous around him now.
3) Good, courteous.
4) I think he was behind the scenes, came to see me on 2nd day But I was following orders.
5) He's doesn't codile and 'babysit' your insecurities. You have to ready to do this and be sure you want to do this - and know the risks.
6) Didn't say much about aftercare neither the staff. Does have online links to support group.
7) No he doesn't not have a structured aftercare program, or am not aware of it.
8) He does group session and addresses everyone's BMI and % of success/loss. Very straight forward approach. YOU need to do your homework before deciding this surgery.
8) Excellent surgeon..the best! Had heard lots of negative comments pre-op but he always has treated me decent. He didn't visit alot - patients have alot of anxiety after surgery - and it's nice to have the doc come over and reassure them that everything is gonna be alright and to continue to follow his orders. I wonder if he's just as nervous as the patient - it always a guess as to how each individual will "react" to this surgery. Some have many complications and others don't. It's a wait and see kind of "game". He doesn't have all the answers..every case is different.
9) Surgical competence and bedside manner are very important. With the patient knowing that the doc is there for support after such surgery he/she can feel more at ease during recovery. However, above all Surgical competence will keep you alive!

I had my revision done in Dec 2005 with Dr. Overcash. He removed my staples as they were eroding my stomach and causing serious scar tissue and issue with my overall health. I had MULTIPLE complications including a heart attack from high potassium levels in my system after surgery, requiring a stomach tube for 2 months and considerable pain. It took me 3 months to totally recover from this surgery.
His treatment of my family was HORRIBLE. His bedside manner was rude at best. He is a knowledgeable surgeon but I believe he is not even practicing in Ocala any longer. There are so many other caring and skill surgeons out there that I would do more research a find another physician

I had a RNY gastric bypass in 1998 and went to Dr. Overcash to consult him concerning a revision. My first impression of him was that he is very caring but very straight to the point. His job is to get your questions answered and get your medical needs met. If you are looking for someone to give you the sugar coated version of what you are about to experience...this is not your surgeon. His office staff was professional, kind and quick on the draw when the need arose. Can't say enough about his Insurance expert Patrice! Wow...great lady! I am scheduled for a revision on Dec. 7th, 2005. Ill keep you posted.

Ok Dr. Overcash, Im 11 years out from your surgery. I have sleeping problems now for about 7 years now, no sleep aid helps, really I think there needs to be a liquid form of ambien. The pills move to fast through our system in order to work the way they should.
Ive done alot of research and so it seems the nutrients we get move through the Jujunum so fast that we dont get the nutrients we need in order to sleep and the iron we need. Pill forms dont break down in our system the way they do in normal people, so yes, please tell us folks that are more than 10 years out of surgery how we can get a better night sleep and more iron..Oh and yea, the Melatonin liquid form doesnt work either!

I chose Dr. Overcash for one reason and one reason only - I heard he was the best in the region.rnrnPrevious posters on this website indicated that his bedside manner was a bit lacking, but I didn't care. I was only concerned with his clinical competence (at the time).rnrnHe is very no nonsense and will tell you exactly like it is. I actually like that about him. His surgical skill is excellent and I had ZERO complications. I have to be honest that I was concerned about the procedure being open (vs. laparascopic), but there was no difference in pain level or recovery as far as I could tell.rnrnMy issue with Dr. Overcash came during my 2nd post-operative visit (for which I drove over 2 hours). When he weighed me, he looked me in the eye and asked me what I was eating. I told him the truth, and I had NOT been cheating AT ALL. He said I MUST be doing \"SOMETHING\" because I was not losing fast enough! I reminded him that I was a revision patient and consequently didn't have as much to lose as a brand new RNY patient. He said he didn't care, that I still wasn't losing fast enough. (I'm guessing I was messing up his statistics.) Well, that was the last time I saw Dr. Overcash. I went home in tears because I KNEW I had not cheated and was doing everything by the book. rnrnAs you can see by my most recent post, I have gone from 210 lbs. the morning of surgery to 132 lbs. and I continue to lose. Unfortunately, Dr. Overcash does not know this.rnrnI'll close with the positive and reinforce that he is an excellent surgeon and has excellent outcomes, but his personality left a lot to be desired, in my opinion.
