Gary Harrington Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

I tell you my gastic bypass Dr. was Dr. Thompson in Omaha Nebraska and my husband is in the military and we were sent to Fort Lee Virginia and then Dr. Harrington took me in as a patient and I can not tell you enough good things about him. He did my abdominal plasty and did a wonderful job he also seen me through all 3 pregnancies and 2 live births through this. He is so supportive of me and my eating disorder I now have he did all he could to help me to where I am now. He is a great Dr. with the best bedside manor I know. He is at St. Mary's hospital in Richmond Virginia.

My first impression of Dr. Gary Harrington was that he was a very caring person. His staff was friendly and very knowledgable. Dr Harrington emphasize aftercare a great deal, he force on correct ways of eating and the importance of taking your vitamins every day. So far the aftercare program seems to be very well rounded. He talks of proper diet and exercising.

Dr. Harrington is just awesome - a great bedside manner, very compassionate, and willing to take his time with every explanation! I HIGHLY recommend him!

Dr. Harrington is one of the most caring and calming individuals I have ever met. Over the course of knowing him I have referred numerous patients too him because he is by far the most knowledgable physician performing the laproscopic approach to bariatric surgery. The office and staff were professional and personable. Commonwealth Surgeons has a great overall program. The wait for an appointment can sometimes be a bit long, but well worth it. The aftercare provided by Dr. Gary Harrington and his staff was outstanding. It did not matter what time of day or night you called with a problem someone always contacted you promptly. The risks of the surgery were explained clearly and with great detail from the very beginning. I would rate Dr. Harrington and the staff of Commonwealth Surgeons a "10".
Being a nurse I looked for both surgical competence and bedside manner and both were great. Ironically I had scheduled my surgery with another doctor prior to meeting Dr. Harrington, but after meeting him I canceled my original surgery date and scheduled by surgery with Dr. Harrington.

I came in contact with Dr. Harrington when he performed WLS on my best friend Shawna. She had such great success that I decided to consult with him. At the time my sister was interested in the surgery and went as well. He really impressed me with his knowledge and understanding. His staff was great and assisted with everything. He really stresses what you need to do and be aware of before and after surgery. He explained the risks, benefits and possible complications fully and made me feel at ease about possibly having surgery. I would definitely recommend him to anyone based on what I know about him. I think he has the qualities to be competent as well as have great bedside manner, although I have not had the chance to experience that yet.

I met Dr. Gary Harrington for the 1st time, today! He is so informative and supporting. He is sending my information to my insurance company and said I should know something in a few weeks. Dr. Harrington goes over every aspect of gastric bypass surgery, from pre-op to post-op and beyond.

I am starting over from scratch after changing insurance companies - I met with Dr Harrington for the 2nd time today and my opinion hasn't changed....keeping my fingers crossed for good news this time....


I am now 5 days post op and I can not express my feelings on Dr Harrington, if any one is considering having Gastric Bypass, Dr. H gets a 150% vote of confidence from me!!!! He is the greatest!

Totally impressed the first time I met Dr. Harrington. The office and staff are very professional. Every time I had a question, I could email Dr. Harrington's bariatric assistant and I always got a response in a timely fashion.
Dr. Harrington, himself, is very professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable. (I've been told he's the best in the area).
A great deal of emphasis is placed on aftercare. My insurance wouldn't ever needed this information before considering approval for surgery.
Dr. Harrington was very frank about the risks. He left out nothing.
Just from my encounters and what I have heard about him, he gets a very high rating from me.
I believe surgical competence and bedside manner are equally important.

My first impression of Dr. Harrington was that he is a very kind and patient man. I haven't really had much contact with his office staff other than Hilarie, the surgery coordinator. I've spoken with her on the phone several times, and she's very friendly and helpful. I have also had much contact with Barbara, his Nurse Practitioner, and wow...Barbara is GREAT!! She's extremely friendly, knows what she's doing, and, if you can believe it...she returns phone calls!! :-D

Future patients should know that when they go for their consultation appointment, they should not be nervous. I felt totally at ease with Dr. Harrington as soon as he walked in the room.

Dr. Harrington explained the risks of surgery to me in great detail. He did not skim over anything, or try to make the surgery sound like a miracle cure...he told me point blank that it involves a major lifestyle change and that it wouldn't always be easy.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Dr. Harrington and his office staff a 10 overall. He has a wonderful bedside manner, and came to visit me every day I was in the hospital (Which actually wasn't very long since he's a most excellent surgeon and I had no complications!). I am extremely happy with Dr. Harrington and his office staff.

I met with the surgeon yesterday, i had to wait three hours because he was is surgery but after driving 3 hours i was not leaving and i must say that it was worth the wait. Dr. Harrington was wonderful, he anwsered all my questions and his office staff was great. I would recommend him to anyone in the Richmond area.

Dr. Harrington is a great surgeon and I have not heard anything but good things about him. He was very thourough and willing to answer all my questions. The staff at Commonwealth Surgeons were very nice and helpful. The group is very active in making sure that you are taken well care of.
