I have just met him once, so far. I had an initial visit, that turned out to be a group consultation. What I mean is he had about 8 of us there for our first visit and he met with us in a group and discussed what surgery he performs and how he performs it. He does the RNY with a open vertical cut. He says he prefers the open cut to laprascopy because he is in and out faster, he can get to everything easier, and we are under for only 1-2 hours versus 3-4 with laproscopy. He seemed friendly enough.
I was also lucky enough to sit and talk with 2 of his post-op patients. I asked them all kinds of questions about the surgery and him. They both agreed he is nice enough, but not the best bedside manner, but the hospital staff was great! One was 6 months post-op and had already lost 100 lbs, the other was 2 weeks post-op and didn't know how much she'd lost. They both showed their scars to the waiting room, discussed their diet and what they had experienced. How they are more temperature sensative now, meaning they get cold easier.
I am of the opinion, if he is great at what he does, then I am happy....if his bedside manner lacks, that is fine as long as he is a great surgeon.
I was given some documents for information and a list of at least 25 post-op patients with phone numbers, that shows confidence. He informed us that there are several risks with this surgery, including and not limited to: death, leakage, ruptured spleen or intestine, etc. We were encouraged to ask questions, and did. He told us this surgery can and has been reversed, he has reversed 3 himself. 2 because the patients weren't mentally balanced and did not comprehend that they could not eat the same way as before the surgery, and the 3rd because the man owned a steak house and wanted to be able to eat steak again.
I'll update this as I have more contact with him. His secretary, Ida, has been the person I have had more contact with but only over the phone as I live 4.5 hours from the office.
I HAVE READ A LOT ABOUT FABITO ON THE INTERNET. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ OR HEARD HAS BEEN GOOD. HE IS A VERY PLEASANT PERSON. AND IS VERY CONFIDENT ABOUT HIS WORK. HIS OFFICE SECRETARY IDA IS VERY NICE. I THINK SHE IS PROBABLY OVERWORKED BUT SHE IS SO FRIENDLY. HIS OFFICE IS SMALL AND I DIDN'T SPEND ANY TIME WITH HIM ONE ON ONE. WE WERE TALKED TO IN A GROUP. HIS AFTER CARE IS FOR THREE YEARS OR LONGER IF NEEDED WHICH HE SAYS IS VERY IMPORTANT. HE SEES YOU IN 1 WK. 3 MONTHS UP TO A YEAR AND AFTER THAT YEARLY FOR 3 YEARS. HE TELLS YOU THE RISKS BUT DOESN'T THINK THE RISK ARE ANY WORSE THAN ANY OTHER SURGERY IF YOU ARE HEALTHY. I HAVEN'T HAD SURGERY YET BUT EVERYONE SEEMS TO RATE HIS COMPETENCE AND BEDSIDE MANNER VERY HIGH. I DO HAVE SOME HEALTH PROBLEMS AND I TRUST HIM MORE WITH MY LIFE THAN ANYONE ELSE I HAVE HEARD OF. I THINK I WILL BE IN VERY GOOD HANDS. HE DOES 8 ROWS OF STAPLES AND 2 ROWS OF STICHES AND HE TOLD ME HE HAD NOT HAD A LEAK SINCE HE STARTED DOING THAT.

7.Yes...It is called New Start Program his program of aftercare is Great...
8.Dr.Fabito made me aware of all the risk of this surgery and what really impressed me was he told us to read everything we could about the surgery and to make sure that we knew this was a total life changing surgery and to absolutely make sure we wanted to make this life changing comitment.
9.I rate him 10
10. Surgical Competence is Superior Beside manner is great also ..my scar is completely straight....hehe
I had very high reguard for Dr. Fabito. He had done thousands of these surgeries.
Yes, I still have high reguard for him, but I think he needs to spend more time with his patients.
I have only met Ida, his assistant. She is very nice, and can be very helpful with some reminding.
Be patient when I comes to appointments. You will be there awhile.
Not as much as I would like.
They have a support group headed by a person who has worked with eating disorders for over 10 years.
Yes. They went over the risks in detail.
Yery good.
both very pretty good.
I was impressed with Dr. Fabito. My husband and I thought he made some real good points in his speech to about 6 of us looking into this surgery. He does have a good sense of humor as others had said. He has a unique way of stapling the pouch - he does it with a new type stapler that does 4 staples at a time and he also adds some kind of steri-strip(?) in between the stapler and he does a double staple line of 8 staples so there is not a good chance at all of a leak or a ruptured staple line. Gave good reasons for why he does it. Very competent Dr. He has done this for sooo many years and has seen the changes in the surgery and has incorporated things into his surgeries that he thinks will make for even better success after surgeries. He answered all my questions and covered most of them before I even had the chance to ask them. I am anxiously waiting insurance approval now.
My first meeting with Dr. Fabito was today (4/27/01). We had to wait an hour and a half to see him, but I didn't mind too much as there were alot of people there that had just had the surgery and a couple of "old pro's". Everyone was great about sharing their experiences. Everyone there today had nothing but good things to say about Dr. Fabito. Dr. Fabito seemed very interested and understaning about the problems (medical, emotional, social) that obesity brings. He was very up front about the risks and the other types of WLS, but explained the reasons about why he prefered the open RNY. He seems extremly competent and gives part of the credit for success with his program to the rest of the team (you, the nutritionist, the nurses, etc) He encouraged everyone to become part of a support group afterwards too. I really like him so far!
I haven't met Dr. Fabito yet. He does have my complete medical history, and I have met some of his patients. They love him. I know that the staff at Southpointe consider Dr. Fabito to be the best of the surgeons performing this procedure there. My husband works there occ. in the respiratory dept. through his agency when they are short staffed, and the respiratory staff think very highly of Dr. Fabito, and they also said that the patients in the New Start Program section of the hospital get the best care of anyone in the hospital due to the committment of the staff. I have met many members of his New Start Staff, and/or spoken to them by phone. They have been very helpful to me, even on days when I felt like a crazy person. Ida, in Dr. Fabito's office has also been a tremendous help to me. A new receptionist/insurance person in my dr.s office was slowing things up, and Ida had her fax over the referral form, and she did it for her, and added it to my letters from Dr. Fabito. Ida handled all the insurance from then on, and she remembered my name when I would call and check on the status of my claim.
