He was serious, no sense of humor. Cut to the chase, no fluff.
Later in the OR he smiled. His office staff is awsome! One of his nurses even had the surgery herself.
He is a very skilled surgeon and in the end that's all that really counts. I was only in the hosp. for 1 1/2 days. and my recovery was super. I was shopping w/in 3 days and only had 1 uncomfortable nite.
He has no after care program. beleives you need to do it on your own becuase you may not habe support at a party etc. and you will ultimintly have to make the disicion
of what/how much to eat.
DR. WONGSA IS THE BEST SURGEON I KNOW.
HE IS A VERY STRAIGHT FOWARD MAN. HE WANTS THE BEST FOR YOU BUT DOESN'T WANT TO INFLUENCE YOUR DECISION. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT YOU WANT AND ALSO HAVE HAD THE RESEARCH DONE. ITS A LIFE TIME CHANGE AND ITS VERY RISKY. AFTER MY FIRST APPOINTMENT I DEALT WITH THE NURSES. JACKY WAS GREAT. I HAD TO LOOSE 5 LBS AND I LOST 9 LBS, HE WAS VERY HAPPY ABOUT THAT AND EVEN ON MY SURGERY DATE I WAS ALL HOOKED UP TO IV'S AND HE SAID SINCE YOU'VE LOST 9 LBS WHY DON'T I JUST STOP THE SURGERY AND LOOSE THE WEIGHT BY MYSELF. OF COURSE I SAID NO. MY EXPERIENCE WITH HIM AS MY SURGEON IS THE BEST.
My first surgeon was Dr. Marcus Free in Corpus Christi. I was scheduled for surgery March 5, 2004. Dr. Free's plans changed, he is closing his practice, which he so kindly informed me of the day before surgery, so now I am in pursuit of another surgeon. The search and waiting game begins again.
I researched lots and lots of profiles and comments on sugeons before I decided that Dr. Wongsa was the one for me. I went to my first consult with Dr. Wongsa in Houston on April 16th. It went pretty much as I expected. I have read lots and lots of his patients comments, so I was prepared. He definitely is not the "warm, fuzzy" type. I need a skilled, competent surgeon, not a best friend, and I do believe in his skills. I was not instructed about any aftercare program, other than the amount of food I will be consuming, my daily vitamins and when my follow-up visits are. One of the first comments he made to me was "you know you can die from this surgery", that was pretty much all he covered in the risk area. We did not go into that since I was previously O.R. ready and had been briefed on all the risks. It is really hard to rate Dr. W. after one brief visit. I think I will save the rating for after surgery. I am hoping to have surgery the latter part of June.
I really liked him. All the reviews of him said he was kind of aloof but straight forward. I think he is just no-nonsense & he wants to make sure you understand what a life changing event this is. If you are not serious, he doesn't want you wasting his time. There's nothing wrong with that. I also got to meet a lot of people waiting in his office. All post-ops were thrilled with their results and Dr. Wongsa. His staff is very friendly & couldn't emphasize enough that if I had any questions to call them anytime. I feel very confident that he is the right surgeon for me & that I am doing the right thing. Now, the hard part - waiting for insurance approval.
I met with Dr. Wongsa, he is a very straigt and to the point person. He treats you like your a person not some person who has no feelings. He sure isn't part of the good old boy network either. I am looking forward to working with him. I had a bunch of questions going into his office but he answered all of them before I could ask him. I felt very comfortable meeting with him and am confident in the outcome.
Dr. Wongsa is serious about this surgery. You have to prove commitment to the process and have to work to build a relationship. I was very fortunant to have a friend who had Dr. Wongsa perform her and her husbands surgery. Do exactly what he says, listen to what he says, ask questions that demostrate that you understand what he says. I am 3 days post op and it feels as though I didn't have surgery. I have not been on pain medication since the day of surgery and have done every single thing he requested of me.
Office staff is friendly, and supports his message of seriousness. Office staff is very competant. Surgical competence is extremely important to me and being fully functional 2 1/2 to 3 days after surgery is why I chose competence. I live in Dallas/Fort Worth and continue to drive 4 hours to Houston to have Dr. Wongsa care for me.
