He is a bit dry but He knows what He is doing and that was more important to me. He took the time to talk about my health and not just the surgery it self he gave me a lot of information and gidance. His staff is the best. They have beenthere to answer even what I thought to be silly questions and explained things to me. They took care of the paperwork and helped me with the insurance letter.I have called many times and they are always ready to asit me and help in any way they can.
Hi,
I just celebrated my one year anniversary on February 5th. My highest weight was 290 and now I'm at 138. I would not put my life in other surgeon's hands. He is the best of the best in my book. Dr. Wongsa can be very hard on you and there are times you don't want to hear everything he has to say to you but he cares about everyone of his patients. He is tough because he knows that if you cheat or do bad things you are only cheating yourself. His office staff is outstanding and they work with you along the way to make sure you are comfortable with your choice. I don't know about everyone else out there but this was my last resort. I was 32 and had been on every diet and program under the sun and I wanted to make it to the finish line. If anyone would like to contact me please feel free I'm here to help anyone that I can with questions or concerns. Good luck !
Marcie
I liked Dr. Wongsa and he did an excellent job on me. However, his manner after surgery was abrupt. I believe that he just wants you to succeed and if he doesn't see results like he thinks they should be he becomes upset. I still believe he is one of the best surgeons for this surgery. A little etiquette would not be out of the question for him though. I did not return except for 2 follow up visits because of his behavior. I have lost 160 lbs and do not feel that I have not accomplished what I set out to do.
DR Wongsa Is a straight forward man, He tells it like it is and how it will be. He demanded I loose 10 lb. before surgery. If I didn't loose the weight he wouldn't do surgery. This scared me because I knew he ment it. loosing the weight was probably to see if I was committed, or maybe it was to catch my body on the loosing side for surgery, or Maybe it was for my health and recovery. Which ever it was? Those 10 pounds came off slowly but surly, in fact when I hit the 10 pounds I kept on going to 14 pounds lost before surgery day. I didn't even opt out for that last meal as it is called. The morning of Surgery he came to me with a smile and asked how much weight I lost for surgery, I was so pleased to tell him.
When I woke up from surgery DR Wongsa explained all that was done to me, My staples looked beautifully each cut was precise. What a great DR he is.
I could only drink liquids or S/F. Jell-O for the first 7 days then it was lean mean and green leafy vegetables. I have not had any complications, or I have not had any nausea, diarrhea, as of today which is 9 days out. DR Wongsa office staff is awesome they are so helpful, and understanding.
I feel fabulous I have no regrets.
Thank You Wonderful Dr. Wongsa
My first impression of Dr. Wongsa wasn't that great. When I went into his office to wait on him he sat at a large desk and I sat in the chair in front of him. He asked me what my weight and height was and my current medical conditions.
Then I asked all 37 of my questions and he answered them very straight forward and direct. He did not have a personality on the first visit.
My opinion of this first visit now was that he was wanting me to be very serious about going forward with this elective proceedure to loose weight and wanted to make sure that I knew the risks involved in the surgery itself. I also made the mistake of asking him to go ahead and do a tummy tuck while he had me on the table and he really got upset with this question. It was at this point that he made the statement to me that if I was their for vanity reasons that I should get up and leave and he had no smile on his face. Upon the not so great advice of a friend who had previously had her surgery and a tummy tuck I stupidly asked this question. However my motives were not for vanity alone. I have to vertabraes out and didn't want to leave any excess wait on my stomach pulling on my back.
Other than this I really liked Dr. Wongsa he was straight forward and very serious and completly honest with me and I don't need the bedside manners in the first meeting, I needed what he was able to deliver.
On our second meeting it went much faster and both of us were at ease. Dr. Wongsa was still very serious about my convictions to have the surgery and still wanted to make sure that we were on the same page.
What Dr. Wongsa lacks in his bedside manner his staff well makes up for. Jackie is the one that you talk to about getting your insurance coverage. She was on my side from the beginning and helped me to expedite my paperwork and to get my approval as quickly as possible. The other benefit was that she had had the same exact surgery 3 years prior and was able to answer a lot of my questions and concerns about the surgery itself, the foods, my cravings, the hospital, the staff and made sure that I was on track with my weight loss before surgery to ensure that I would not be turned away the day of surgery. Dee is also as nice and she is extremely patient as Dr. Wongsa's nurse. :) Dee gives you the softer side of Dr. Wongsa's goals for you and ease's the process of the weight loss before surgery and I was very pleased with her comming to the hospital after surgery to check on me and make sure that I understood my orders for going home and any other questions and concerns that I might of had. Dee was also able to get me in to see Dr. Wongsa after my surgery on the 6th day to get the staples removed and give me a release to return to work becuase I could not afford to be off any longer than my scheduled vacation days.
Their wasn't much that I didn't like about Dr. Wongsa and his staff (my only suggestion would be to call and call and call and keep calling because of them being so busy) and make sure that when Jackie tells you that you need to make an appointment to get this test or that test done or see a Shrink or the Dietician at the hospital she is telling you this so that you will get your approval much faster.
You should know that when you go see Dr. Wongsa to have all your ducks in a row. Be prepared with your questions written down for him and for the nurse and or the insurance approval. Make a point to be prepared for the seriousness of the surgery when you make your first visit. Other than that it is a pleasant place to visit and get to talk to other patients that have had the surgery.
The aftercare for Dr. Wongsa's patients is solely up to the patient. Meaning that you need to make sure that you get your appointments scheduled every 6 weeks after your surgery. They do not formerly require you to go to a support group and personally that's not a bad thing for me because I work 40 hours and go to school. I use this link and one other to get the support that I need.
Dr. Wongsa address's the risk of surgeries the very first meeting and tells you of the statistics and if you ask he will tell you how many patients he has personally lost. Dee will also give you the numbers before you have the surgery and then again right before your going to be sedated for surgery they will give you the last moments to decide if you want to go through with and understand that there are risks and that this is totally elective.
I rate Dr. Wongsa a 10 after researching this surgery for more than 2 years and interviewing Dr.'s in the area where I live and because of the number of successful operations that he has preformed.
After the initial visit where I beleive Dr. Wongsa is trying to weed out the people who really are unsure of having this surgery his bedside manners are great. In the hospital I wanted for nothing. I was sedated well with pain meds and never even had to ask for them. His surgical competence speaks for itself with the 800 plus behind him now. He has had a definite opportunity to fine tune his surgical skills. I have 5 small inscions and they were very neatly cut and with another 6 months you wont be able to even notice that they are surgical scars.
I met with Dr. Wongsa on 4-28-03. He is a straight-to-the-point kind of person. I kind of got the impression that he was being condesending to me, but he did answer any and all questions asked. He also questioned me as to my reasons for surgery and warned me of the risks. He seemed to lighten up a little toward the end of the consultation. The main thing is I'm paying him for his skill, not to be my friend.
His staff was very friendly and caring. I have heard great things about them and their abilities with insurance filings. I hope mine goes through ok.
The main thing I did not care for was how he seemed to put me on the immediate defense about my weight, weight loss history, and reasons for surgery.
Future patients should be forwarned that Dr. Wongsa is very straight-laced and 'dry'. Do not go to him unless you are serious about WLS.
Ok, let's just say that my opinion of Dr. Wongsa has changed greatly. He is one of the most caring people I have ever met. Since I had developed complications, he has been by my side in order to get me throught this. Once you get past the initial sterness, he is a wonderful, caring person who will go that extrat mile for you.
I would have to recommend Dr. Wongsa to anyone seeking a WLS surgeon, but with the warning of what to expect. He is a "top-notch" surgeon and is probably the best you can find in the Houston area for this surgery.
I had my first appointment with Dr. Wongsa yesterday on the 14th of October. I was nervous because a lot of people told me he was really hard and strict. But, I really liked him a lot. He answered all my questions and me feel at ease. He came highly recommended my a lot of people and I am glad I have chosen him. He told me I had to lose 5 pounds and quit smoking! Which is for the best, I know.
