March 31, 2003,
I just received my paperwork and flight information and I have been assigned to Dr. Mary Murphy at Pacific Bariatrics in San Diego. I go on April 10th for appointments with the surgeon, internist and psych. Kaiser pays my flight and taxi while there. I haven't met Dr. Murphy yet so I will post again after the appointment.

April 12, 2003
I had all my consultation appointments on 4/10. I was quite pleased with Dr. Mary Murphy. She seemed to really show an interest in me and never made me feel that she was in a hurry. She was very clear on the possible side effects and what she wants with her patients. I had already begun changing my habits by giving up sodas and caffine 2/1/2003. I have been exercising and have been taking the ProComplex for about 3 weeks. I had actually lost 3 pounds since my orientation. Dr. Murphy said for me to continue to work on losing weight and to make sure I don't gain any or my surgery could be cancelled. I feel I am in good hands.

Dr Mary is fabulous. She is not a blah blah blah Dr. who speaks to hear her own voice. She will tell you what you need to hear, if you want to hear it or not. She was the surgeon who did the seminar I went to and I was pleased to find out she would be my surgeon. I have heard that her bedside manner is 5 star.

I met with Dr. Murphy on my Evaluation Day (Feb 11, 2003) in San Diego. Other than her running late, my experience in her office was overwhelmingly positive. She is very personable and patient, and took the time to answer all of my questions. She wrote out a list of all of the potential problems with the surgery, discussing each with me in turn, making sure that I understood all of the negative possiblities, but she was not negative herself. She does want me to be sure to exercise every day before surgery, and to be sure to maintain my vitamin regimen, but she stressed that by doing these things, my recovery would be easier. How's that for a carrot! Everyone in the office was nice and happy to help in any way they could. My only regret about Dr. Murphy is that I will only get to see her when I go to San Diego for surgery, since I'm from out of the area and am flying down for it. I hope that she'll be the doctor at one of the post-op check-ups I will go to. I would rate her as a 10.

Dr. Mary was sweet, kind and caring every time I saw her in San Diego. She is a skilled surgeon and I do not hesitate to recommend her to anyone who is thinking about this surgery.

I think that Mary Murphy is great! She has been very upfront and honest about a number of questions and concerns that I had. She took her time in explaining and made sure that I was completely comfortable with the information. She spent more time than I had actually expected talking with and the person who will be with me after the surgery. I am very excited and just waiting for the date to be set.

Dr.Mary murphy is just the kind of Doctor I best respond to: she's personable, a natural teacher, candid, competant. Her group Pacific Bariatric has contracted with Kaiser for these surgeries...approval went slow, but steady ( due to keeping on them constantly to get all the steps done)So far the experience with PB has been good. A little slow to return calls but I feel in good hands there.no rudeness, no problems getting appts, everyone saw me earlier than scheduled...guess I got lucky! finished by preop exams and had 3 hours to kill, so I went shopping, bought new shoes and CDs

I was very impressed with her - she took her time - actually sat down and talked to me. She did an exam, asked questions, listened to what I had to say and answered my questions.

Dr. Murphy was great during my evaluation. She took pleanty of time to answer all my questions and explain the procedures and process. Her staff was great. Very encouraging and shared their experiences after WLS which helped a lot.

As my original surgeon was not a Blue Cross PPO doctor, I switched to a surgical group that is acceptable to both my primary insurance--Blue Cross and secondary insurance--Kaiser. I am going through the hoops for both companies hoping they will coordinate benefits.

I have seen Dr. Murphy, the internist Dr, Bresler, and the psych Dr. Hildebrandt. I have nothing but praise for the caring and gentle manner they all displayed. Wish me luck--I am hoping for a March or April surgical date.

So far I have only met with Dr. Mary Murphy once for our initial consult. She made me feel that she was not only a competent surgeon, but that she also really cares about what is happening to me. She is clear about what she expects me to do prior to and after surgery and that these requirements are not just rules, they are to help me have an easier time during and after surgery and to be successful, and also to help her do her job. I am excited that she is going to be my Dr.
