I had a great experience at SVMC, as I had hoped it would be, being that it is a bariatric center of excellence. Everyone was extremely professional and caring, and my entire experience, from admitting to discharge, went like clockwork. I even was given a private room with my own shower. As with any hospital, you do get awakened a lot at night by various nurses and aides for medication/vitals check, but it wasn't awful. It was a little surprising, though, that there were no larger-sized chairs in the hospital room, but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, I would definitely recommend St. Vincent's Medical Center to other people interested in having WLS.
Two out of four of the nurses that cared for me were excellent, the other two were very poor. They did not respond when I called them for assistance and at one point at around 11 PM I had called because I needed assistance using the bathroom and the nurse did not respond even though I had pushed the call button 5 times over a 25 minute period. I had to call the switchboard to get them to get my nurse to come help me and when she did she was very rude and angry because I had called the switchboard and wouldn't even help me into or out of bed when I had only had surgery 12 hours earlier. I would suggest that the hospital be a bit more aware of their staff because they have some excellent nurses and some terrible ones, and the shortfalls of the terrible ones could really put the health of the patient at risk.
Once past the Main Lobby, the hospital appeared dark and dingy - especially the surgical floor. The support staff, with the exception of a few that I came in contact with, were poor English-speaking and rude. The nursing staff on the surgical floor, especially on the overnight shift, was terrible. They did not answer call buttons in a timely manner (and it wasn't because they were busy), and in one case never answered it at all. At one point I had to get up to use the bathroom and couldn't wait anymore, so I ripped the electrical cord for my IV pump out of the wall so I could drag the pole to the bathroom with me. A transport gentleman brought a post-op gallbladder patient in to share my room at 10:30 p.m. that evening and helped her to her bed. He then rang the call buzzer and said that he just delivered a new patient to the room. Being awake all night, I was aware that NO ONE came in to check on this patient until 4:30 the next morning, after I walked down the hall and told the nurse that she was moaning in pain. No one even came in to take vitals all through the night, either. Luckily, I was feeling surprisingly well and could get up and do things for myself, but if I couldn't, I certainly wouldn't want to be stuck in that hospital. DISGRACEFUL.
I was not thrilled with the nursing staff on the floor. I was in the RR all day til 3pm. Transfurred at change of shift and left until about 2.5 hours later ringing my call bell several times for pain med. I was actuall in tears when someone finally showed up. I am no weenie with pain I have had 3 children. Then I got attitude from the nurse. Like I was bothering her (both eve and night shift) I could not get out of there fast enough. I personally would not choose this hospital again for myself....I would prob. HURT someone.
