Dr. Wongsa is the only surgeon I want to do my surgery. He operated on my best friend and she is doing great. My 1st consultation was on July 30th, 2001. We already knew each other from me going with my friend, but he still took all the time I wanted. His staff is very friendly and helpful, and you can't call too much.(Believe me I have tried.) It's nice to go to a Dr. and feel like you are the most important person there.
I really liked Dr. Wongsa. He got right to the point and was straight forward about eveeything. He knew that I had been to this sight so he did'nt go into alot of details. He handed me a small plastic medicine cup that you take liquid medicine out of and told me that my stomach would be have that size and that I should carry this around with me and gt used to the size. I still have it in my purse and use it to show others. He also was very stern about eating 3 meals daily, especiallly breakfast, even if you have to get up earlier. He told me in no nice words the risks involved in surgery. He has no aftercare program but makes himself available to you, if needed. He told me that I should lose most of my weight in 6 months, about 90 pounds. He also said I could have juices as long as they were not artificially sweetened.I would reccomend him to anyone. His staff is nice. It took them 10 days to send of my paperwork. It would have taken 9 but My insurance was shut down one day for weather reasons.
I too feel for the family and friends of Karen Reyes, But I owe my life to Dr. Wongsa. There are risks for any surgery, If I had to do it again, Dr. Wongsa would again be my choice. There are other surgeons in the Houston area whom have lost patients also, I dont see them being bashed on the website. <p>
7/17/01 I had my sugery with Dr Wongsa on the 12th, He is as wonderful as I thought. I am doing very good. He is very caring and compasionate man. I am very thankful I was allowed the opportunity to have him perform my sugery.!!!!I would do it again in a heartbeat!!Dr. Wongsa is the best. I wish I could have my surgery tomorrow. I met him for the first time on April 20. I really didnt need to meet him, I called the surgeon who saved my life years ago and asked who he recommended and he said Dr. Wongsa. NUFF SAID. Everyone at CyFair says he is the only one they would trust to do the surgery. You all will just LOVE Ruth in his office. She is a sweetheart. Dr. Wongsa does not have a structured aftercare program, but some people on this site are trying to put together a support group on their own, Good Idea. Dr. Wongsa believes the surgery is a good tool if you follow the rules, lots and lots and lots of Protein, water, exercise. I am game. Best of luck to all of you considering Dr. Wongsa, you will not be sorry for choosing him. :)
Dr. Wongsa and his staff have been helpful but not intruding. I like that. As for support help I'm learning about this site and enjoy it better than having to go to meetings.
The doctor explained thoroughly the procedure and the possible complications. He made certain that I had no further questions before terminating my consultation appointment. He never once seemed pressed for time or in a hurry.
7/13/01 Update. Dr. Wongsa is a skilled professional surgeon, I would have him do my surgery again. I do sugget that nutrition and support groups be a bigger part of his practice.
I had my appointment with my PCP on Wednesday, July 11, 2001, and he gave me my referral to see Dr. Wongsa. I was so excited. I had actually called Dr. Wongsa two or three days earlier and made an appt. with him with Dee because I just knew I would get the referral. I ask her how far they were booked on surgeries and she said looks like the end of August. I made the appt. to see Dr. Wongsa on July 27, 2001. She said that was the earliest I could get in. The PCP gave me a copy of the referral, so I faxed it to the surgeon myself, just because I am so excited and I want everything to work out. I called and spoke with Ruth the day I got the referral and ask if there were any cancellations and she said no, but my name was on a list to call. I am so excited, I can't wait until I meet Dr. Wongsa.
2-23-01 -- I met with Dr. Wongsa today, deciding to pursue this avenue after delays with the other program. He is very easy going and takes plenty of time to explain the procedure, risks, post-op eating and anything else I wanted to know. I liked that he offered so much information, not leaving it to me to ask questions.
7-8-01 -- While I would definitely recommend Dr. Wongsa do this surgery, he and I have butted heads about nutrition and the pace at which he expects me to lose weight. He does not like the idea of protein supplements and is of the opinion that, if you don't lose your weight in the first six months, you probably won't lose it at all. (He expects me to lose 160 in six months.) The end result is that I decided to find another doctor to handle my long-term post-op care.
My first visit with Dr. Wongsa was at the end of May. I still cannot believe how undertanding and helpful he was during my visti (it lasted about 1 hour). He took a great deal of time to discuss everything with me and answer all my questions. His staff (especially Ruth) is wonderful. He told me I was definately a candidate of the surgery, and his office took care of all the forms and insurance paperwork. I was notified in two weeks that I was approved. I could not believe how simple and easy they made it for me -- espeically after reading some of the troubles others have had with their insurance carriers. I'm sure Dr. Wongsa and his staff had a great deal to do with paving the way for my surgery which is on August 1st. Obviously, this has been a very positive and encouraging experience so far -- I expect the rest of the journey will be too. I'll keep you posted.
I met with Dr wongsa on friday May 11th for the first time..My first impression of him was.."im glad hes straight to the point".!!!
Terri wilkes also had an appt. so we all had a chance to talk..!! He was serious but yet fun and was open to what was said..
Ruth, his nurse was also very friendly..I felt very at ease there and i wasnt nervous at all..We had Ruth laughing and had a good time.Dr Wongsa explained the risks and he seemed very straight forward with me,you could tell he cared a great deal for all his patients and wanted to see all reach their goals..
He didnt like at all the fact that i smoked.. duh.. but then again what dr would..?? lets just say.. I dont want to smoke anymore..
He had me thinking alot about my life and how i would see myself 6 months after my surgery..NOT THE FACT THAT I WOULD LOOK HALF WAY DECENT, BUT THE FACT THAT I WOULD BE HEALTHY AND THATS WHAT WOULD MATTER..!!
I came into this site looking at other ppls before and afters thinking.. I WANT THAT TO BE ME..but after my visit i came out with a better outlook on it all..and im glad I did..!! THANK YOU DR. WONGSA..
and as Dr. Wongsa would say...
"EATS LOTS OF PROTEIN"..lol

Insurance mailed me a letter today saying that they needed more information on other doctors and my medical records,I called insur. and they wanted to make sure i have tried to lose the weight without making the choice myself to have this surgery,i was really upset because i think with or without this surgery it should be my choice. I dunno, we shall see what happens now, Im still waiting not so patiently!!!
When I first got to Dr. Wongsa's office, I was suprised at how small it was... and that his only exam room was also his office. However, he spoke with my husband and I in GREAT length about the gastric bypass surgery. He took his time and made sure all of our questions were answered. We were with him for 1 1/2 hours!!! I adore him! His staff is nice, but small. You have to be patient, as they are very busy.
