I found Dr. Berkowitz a very nice and informative doctor. He explained the risks and answered all questions.- I told him I had found this site and he told me to continue coming here. I also met with Jenny who was as equally nice and had the surgery done by him 14 mths prior. She answered questions and explained more about what happens after I leave the hospital.I am now in the waiting for insurance mode.
I met with Dr. Berkowitz on June 25th. He was a very pleasant man. He is very positive and very easy to talk with. Normally I am very uncomfortable discussing myself with doctors. But I did not have that feeling at all. The office staff at Belvidere are very kind and very upbeat. Can't wait to spend more time with them. The were very clear in describing the surgery and the aftercare I would require. The patient counselor was very helpful with alot of my questions. It makes me feel more at ease knowing she has been through the same thing. The only problem I had was the insurance person assigned to my case at the corporate office was very slow at sending my info to Blue Cross and he is never at his desk.
Today is Aug.8 01 and I have my first consultation with Dr Roy Berkowitz at the BTC in Shaumburg,IL. First of all I have heard the stories about those who had to wait to get in to see him well mine was differnt. I was late by 2hrs for the appointment due to bad bad traffic. and they let me still have the appointment. and were very understanding and warm. Patrice was my councler and she was great Just the most wonderful women u will ever meet. AND now the Dr. he was top notch in my book. He knows his stuff and I like that. I knew he did but he was on the ball as we rolled questions honestly and quickly. I am fully aware of the risks through him and this web sight. and I really think if your in the area look him up.He is the one to help.I look forward to him doing the surgery. My oppinion was he did not try selling me on the surgery. and he would I know have a wonderul bedside manner. And I understand he has had lots and lots of surgical competence.
07/24/2001, Well today was the day! I had my first consultation with Dr. B.... My first impression was that he was a very nice and friendly man. We actually spoke before it was time to sit and discuss my options and surgery procedure. The drawback was that the appointment was scheduled for 3:30 PM and I arrive 5 minutes early but it took 45 minutes before anyone acknowledged I was there. I finally received the paperwork to fill out at 4:45 PM which took about 20 minutes to complete. After the long wait, all the other steps went smoothly.
Then Dr. B and I sat down to discuss my case. He is very knowledgeable and professional. He answered most questions during his presentation and also wanted to know some of my personal goals. Dr. B made me feel comfortable and at ease about the decision I had made.
We discussed the risks, what will happen during and after surgery. The process of recovery and the do's and dont's while in the first 6 months! WOW impressive.
Kudos to Patrice Lovett, a lovely personal consultant who underwent the surgery about 2 years ago. Patrice was very kind and thorough in her presentation and actually took the time to even show me her scar since this was one of the barriers I had toward having the procedure. I must say, the scar heals rather nicely and I have no reservations.
The atmosphere was peaceful and the facility was very clean, which was a + in my book!
Dr. B was very informative! He answered my LONG list of questions with patience. I had total faith in his abilities. I liked that this is his specialty - I felt that he understood what I was going through because he's worked with so many obese patients. He did a superb job of covering all the risks with me. Of course, I had done a lot of research on my own, so I was somewhat informed going in. Through Bariatric Treatment Center, the aftercare is very structured. There are required visits every few weeks and I am able to call anytime with questions. I have been VERY pleased with my entire experience at BTC and with Dr. Berkowitz. Oh, and the staff has been wonderful - there are staff members who have had the surgery, so they were a huge encouragement while I was in the hospital. (They were even nice to my parents, who were there with me during my stay!) I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. You will be in good hands.

7/4/01 OK - Let's try this again. BTC is wonderful. Dr. Berkowitz was my surgeon, but I did a lot of followup care with Dr. Boe. They're both the best! Very caring and anxious for the patient to succeed. My first time in the hospital - for the initial surgery, I felt a little like a piece on an assembly line, but I've come to the conclusion that that shows they really know what they're doing. The care was excellent. The second time, just overnight for an incision opening, it was like having your mother care for you. I was taken to the hospital late at night by ambulance - terrified with about 5 inches of my incision opened and draining. I couldn't see it and the doctor at my local hospital had really scared me. When I got to BTC, 3 nurses met me. They got me changed, cleaned up, medicated and comfortable within minutes. The opening turned out to be minor, thank God, but their care made all the difference to me. I would recommend this facility to anyone. Thank you All.
