I met Dr Reines today and I think he is wonderful...HIs staff was great also... Everyone took the time to answer all your questions and make you feel comfortable...Even waiting out in the waiting room was helpful...Everyone was so open to share the experience with me...I was a little nervous when I first got there but now I can't wait to get this surgery over with so I can get on with the rest of my life..
My first impression of Dr. Reines was that he was a very caring individual who truly loves helping people. He treated me with respect and honesty. His office staff was outstanding, very kind and helpful. He addressed the risks of surgery very matter-of-factly. He told me in a straight-forward way that there are risks, some serious, and voluntarily told me his surgical "record". He never tried to hide anything from me and made me feel at ease. I feel I am in excellent hands. I still don't know, however, how my insurance is handled. I don't know if I am supposed to do anything at this point or if they handle it from here. Granted I should have asked at the consult, but no one offered any info. Aftercare was discussed, but there wasn't a huge emphasis on it at this point. Overall, I felt well cared for and in excellent hands.
Dr. Reines was very business like and compassionate at the same time.
I wasnt comfortable at first but he made me comfortable and he answered all my questoins. He was rushed but looking at the waiting room I can see why.
I am glad I made the decision to have this surgery with Dr. Reines he has been very good about my follow ups and he even returns my calls!
Dr. Reines is also the Cheif of Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, so I knew he was the best! Although he has a very dry sense of humor, I can still get him to smile here and there. He is a very serious, thorough surgeon. He always remembers the exact particulars of my surgery and seems to constantly greet me by fake-punching my arm and saying "Hey Kiddo!" His clinic consists of nutritionists and a psychologist to help with the pre-op and post-op care. The follow-up is wonderful and structured, having check-in appointments every fews weeks at first, and then tapering. My last appointment was at the 6 month mark. My next appointment will be at the 1 year mark. There is a monthly (free) support group run my the psychologist, nutritionist, my surgeon, and his surgical partner, Dr. Bruce Thayer.
Dr Reines is a highly professional and caring doctor. He likes you sit in the waiting room listening to all the success stories, in between your sessions with him, a dietician and a psychologist. He is very careful to explain the risks, you watch a video detailing the surgery, and you just talk to him. Its seems casual and comfortable to be there, something I have never experienced in a doctor's office.
Within the three hours the initial visit takes, you are ready to change your life forever. There are pre-op support groups as well as post-op. I know I will be visiting this office many times over the next few years, and I am totally confident that i will be successful. Dr Reines is there for me, to help me succeed.
7/26/00 I had a follow up visit with my surgeon, it went very well. I Lost 10 lbs and he was very happy, he introduced me to Dr. Dobbs who is a surgical resident. he said he likes them all to rotate through the obesity clinic so they will learn how hard obese people have it. He told the resident that most doctors treat the obese poorly and are prejudiced against them. He wants his surgeons to treat us with utmost respect. It was so cool. After my appt. I saw the young doc in the hall and he thanked me for allowing him to be part of my appt. He told me he would look forward to cheking in on me when I have surgery. Wow they make you feel important, just the way it should be, but we've all experienced the other kind of treatment. Anyway insurance is all approved and i signed the permission slip, so I'm all set for Sept. 12. (except for pre-op tests on Sept 6.)Can't wait.
When I first saw him he seemed very rushed, but he took the time to answer my questions and seemed concerned that his staff was giving me the correct information. His staff is great. They are supportive, understanding and efficient. I have already called once with more questions and everyone has been patient with me. They are very firm about their wish for continued care after the surgery and want me to continue with the group meetings as well. The doctor and his entire staff repeatedly told me what the risks were and gave me the average chance of it happening.
Post op - At the hospital I thought he was brief but efficient, I think I was hoping for a little more nurturing. Since I have been out he has been great. Nothing is an inconvenience to him and he and his staff have been a great help. They dont spend more time than they have to with you, but they are very busy and still get what you need done.
My first impression of Dr. Reines was that he is very nice and well liked by his patients. His office staff is very efficient and caring. Dr. Reines and his staff explained all of the complications that can be associated with the surgery.
Now I am just looking forward to getting it done with!!
I have attended two support meetings run by Dr. Reines staff. Both Dr. Reines and Dr. Thayer attend the meetings as well. I have met so many nice people during this "adventure" and have gotten so much support both thru the meetings and thru this web site!
I am extremely happy with my choice of a surgeon and am very confident that the surgery will go well.
My first impression of Dr. Reines was that he seemed to be very serious..., upon entering into his office, I noticed a family photogragh of his wife and his pet dogs. I knew right then that I had something in common with him, his love for dogs. And only a dog lover would understand.---During my Dr. visits with him I questioned him about different areas about the surgery, along with questions pertaining to my health at this time and what I have to look forward to in the future, and was very pleased with all of his reponses to me.I was also pleased with the fact that he did not look at me as number, or a $ sign... You see, I have asthma and on my first consultation he checked my lungs and said to me: "I'm sorry,But you need to get your lungs in shape and start eating healthier-- and listen to what the dietitian told you.-Then come back. He said he would not perform the surgery on me until my lungs were all cleared up. That afternoon, after our intial visit, I drove myself to the Pulmonary and Critial Care Medicine at U-Mass Hospital. Luckily, was able to get a specialist to treat me, boy they put me on everything it seemed, Severent, Flovent, even meds for reflux. 4 weeks later, I was back at Dr. Reines office, my lungs much healthier and was down 27lbs. Prior to that first visit with Dr. Reines, I couldn't even walk from room to room without being out of breathe. So I thank God for that 1st time visit, because I didn't even realize that my lungs where so bad.
While I was there, he explained the complications and the danger of this surgery, along with also the dangers and complications of being obese.
Between Dr. Reines and his staff, they have been quite helpful on telling me about what my aftercare will be. -- Dr. Reines said to me on one of my visits to him: Now that I am going to have the surgery, I will now be "married to him" I thought that was very cute and made me feel he will be there for me for the rest of my life. I then instantly knew, that I felt comfortable knowing that Dr. Reines would be performing my surgery.
I would definately refer anyone who is considering this surgery to Dr. Reines.(since he is the chief surgeon at Newton-Wellsley Hospital) How can you top that??!
