I was impressed with Dr. Harrington when I met him at one of his seminars. I was further impressed when his staff administrator was able to get me approved for surgery in two days! From that day til my surgery date (17 days later), his staff worked effortlessly to ensure that I did everything needed for an uneventful surgery. On surgery day, everything went on scheduled and as planned. I had very little pain and was up walking around in the Recovery Room. My only downside of this whole thing was that I only saw Dr. Harrington once, right before surgery....around 11am. By 9am the next day, I was signing discharge papers....no bariatric tray of liquids, no Dr. Harrington, and very little information about caring for my seven (7) laposcopic scars. I was a bit disappointed. But I was very knowledgeable in my diet, vitamin, and exercise needs, thanks to pre-op visits with Dr. Harrington and my post-op talks with his Biatric Coordinator, Jeanne Farber, while in the hospital.
Dr. Harrington is a wonderful surgeon. On my first visit, I thought he looked like he was about 12, but he told me he was 45. He's done hundreds of this type of surgery. His manner was calm and assuring. He saw me before my surgery and even prayed with me. My husband was impressed because after surgery he came out to talk to him. He also came to my room after surgery. I was really loopy and don't remember hardly anything he said, but I know he was there and that was very important to me. His staff is very nice. They were moving offices during the time leading up to my surgery so things were probably not as efficient as they should have been. rnrnSince the surgery, I have had no complications but feel that had something gone wrong,Dr. Harrington would have been right there for me.rnrnThe one thing that Dr. H told me to do was to walk and lift weights immediately. I think that helped in my recovery process.
I first met Dr. Harrington April 2006. He seemed very personable, I felt comfortable enough to attent the next months support meeting and bring a friend. I have been to 3 of the eetings and still it seemed like he knew me, I realize he see's lots of faces, but he never gave the impression it was our first meeting. I am 2 days post-op. Dr.Harrington checked on me when I was still a little groggy, and a 2nd time later that nite-same day as surgery! I had a visit from Maureen on the morning of the next day and was later released by Dr.Harrington that nite. His bedside manor was very comforting to me. rnSurgical competence and bedside manor were both great in my experience. After care is greatly discussed in prevouis visits, I would recommend going to a support meeting they are very informative.
I'm so excited after trying for most of this year to get Dr. Harrington into my health plan UNICARE NCPPO, he is finally in (yeah!). I went to his meeting on yesterday 12/13/05 at Washington Adventist, when Alfreda told me he as in I wanted to jump up and down, but my knees hurt too bad. Dr. Harrington is just so wonderful. He is a skilled surgeon, caring, willing to discuss the pros and the cons, the what if's, any and everything you want to know about the WLS. I have met a number of his patients before last night and they simply rave about Dr. Harrington. His caring spirit is evident. As he stated last night, he will hound you for the rest of your life. Dr. Harrington actually has a patient that travels from Richmond to his seminar once a month. She is his poster child for the WLS and boy does she look fabulous. He's had several patients follow him up here from his previous practice in Richmond. That in it self should tell you something about Dr. Harrington. I'm not taking anything away from Dr. Fullum, I went to Dr. Fullum because of frustation, but Dr. Harrington was my first choice when I made my decision to pursue WLS. Well, I'm still on the journey, I just made a slight detour. I'll keep you posted.
Dr. Harrington was awsome from the onset. He came in and spoke to both my wife and I. He answered any concerns we had and just checked my overall condition. I don't just mean physically either. He kind of felt out where I was at mentally and emotionally with my size and daily activity. His staff was awsome too. His assistant Alfrieda had the surgery too, and was encouraging and supportive in every way. They sure made it comfortable and relaxing for us to explore the surgery. I would recommend him to anyone, anytime. I knew personally a few people who went to him when he was located in Richmond, Va. They all spoke highly of him, and I know why first hand. As for after care, he recommends it, and as a matter of fact, the first years worth of visits are included in the price of the surgery.
Dr. Gary Harrington has got to be the best bariatric surgeon in the world. He looks too young to be a doctor, but he really knows his stuff. He has a wonderful bedside manner, seems concerned about the me as a patient and as a person and takes time to answer all of my questions. Prior, during, and after surgery, I felt completely comfortable with him and secure in the knowledge that I would be fine in his hands. I switched mid-stream from another doctor to Dr. Harrington, and although I lost 130.00 in the process, it was well worth it to know that I had the best doctor around. I would highly recommend Dr. Harrington to anyone seeking WLS.
I first encountered this Dr. at my second visit to a support group. My first impression was that this was a very confident soft spoken very well dressed man. I had to see my primary care doctor for 6 monthly visits so I did not make my consult appt. for several months after listening to him speak. My impression of him changed when I walked into his office. He is sharing an office with another doctor untill he gets his own space.(his name was not on the door, I just happened to go in to ask where he was located) I was kind of taken aback by the shabbiness of the office. But, I knew he was moving in the near future. (I was told this by his staff) During my initial consult with him he excused himself to answer his cell phone 3x and left the room once. I was bothered by this but figured "oh well" he is a very experienced surgeon, his work is what I was interested in. I had the surgery 3months later and all is well. This doctor is still in the office with no name. Future patients should know that he is a good surgeon and highly qualified. I can't say how his bedside manner is, I never saw him again except the 5 minutes before I was put to sleep and no calls were made to me inquiring how I was from any office staff. I was unhappy with this. I thought it was only common courtesy. I was wrong. I was treated fine at my 2 week follow up but I have nothing good to say about the 4 week follow up visit. These statements are only my personal impressions of the expirence I had. I will not be recommending this Dr. to any friends or family.
