I found Dr. Nohr very nice and very humorous. Sometimes though I was unsure if he was joking or being serious. Only had 20 minutes with him but he took time to answer all of our questions. His office staff was very friendly. Aftercare is very important to Dr. Nohr especially as I live 10 hours away. I will stay in hospital 5 days and stay in Medicine Hat an additional 5 days. After 2 months I will return for another check up. I like a Doctor that is competent but a good bedside manner is very important too.
Had my first appt. with Dr. Nohr two weeks ago. He is very soft-spoken (sometimes hard to hear!) and looks like David Letterman. He seemed not too eager to perform this surgery which, funnily enough, I liked about him. He seems to view it (as I do) as a last resort and wants to make sure all other options have been explored. He also told me I had to "convince" him why he should perform this surgery on me. It really helped me come to terms with my reasons for wanting this and to make sure they were realistic. It did bother me a bit that he hesitated to perform the operation because I have recently been treated for depression. I told him that I'm sure other morbidly obese people are likely depressed as well and that I shouldn't be penalized for having sought treatment. He seemed to accept that. I think it's going to be hard to wait another full year for surgery after having already waited one full year for an initial appointment but I have to lose some weight first (was anyone else too fat for the operation or am I the fattest person alive??) so I guess it's a good thing. The office staff was wonderful, the office was easy to find and overall I was pleased and left feeling confident in his abilities and his reasons for doing this.
Dr. Nohr is referred to as the Patron Saint of the obese in Medicine Hat,he is a wonderful Christian man whoo totally respects you and is kind and compassionate. I recall him saying he was a bit of a perfectionist,I am thinking that is a good thing!
You hear people say Nohr will do it he likes the money which I found untrue he asks a lot of questions and I know of a few that have been turned down by him he even told me I have up until the last minute to change my mind and he is not trying to promote the surgery because it is a rough one. The office staff are very nice but the thing I like least about him is that he is too busy you wait a long time to see him,and he doesn't send you to a dietitican after he says the rest is up to you,no structured aftercare program,I can't comment any further as I only had the one appointment with him and that was one year ago I will know more after the surgery in March,Rhonda
have not met him yet,but have heard many wonderful things about him.his secretary seems very friendly and patient (i have already started buggin her, lol) over the phone but have not met her yet.there is a long wait to get in to see dr.nohr so i would suggest if you are aven thinking about it to make an appointment cause you can always cancel it later.there is also a support group that meets at the local hospital of past and present patients.the only negative i have so far,as i have not met anyone yet,is that there is such a long wait time to see dr.nohr.
I finally met dr.nohr and he is wonderful. He absolutely is caring and very patient of ALL the questions I was asking, lol. He even feels he would like to get me in sooner and has put me on his personal cancellaton list .He stresses that he worries about people that cant give up certain foods or sodas cause they wont do well with this surgery. But he feels I will.well the waiting game starts now...unless of a cancellation i will be going under in june 2003.
Dr. Nohr is a wonderful, caring person and is an extremely competent surgeon. He recognizes obesity as a disease and gives his gastric bypass patients a chance at a healthier, happier life. His nurse, Karen, is very nice and very helpful if you have any questions. Although my surgery is another year away, I have complete trust in Dr. Nohr and his surgical skills.
Nov. 2002 I am 3 weeks post op, and my opinion of Dr. Nohr has only gotten better. He did an excellent job on my surgery, I am feeling great and have had no complications. He does a gastroscopy at 8 weeks post op to check for problems. He also came every day to see how I was doing, he has a great sense of humor and has a very nice bedside manner. He speaks quietly, sometimes you have to strain to hear him. I would give Dr. Nohr a 10 in his surgical competence and bedside manner.
I liked him right away! He was straight forward and told me all of the risks involved, and exactly what he would be doing. I unfortunately have to travel 11 hours to get to him, as there are no surgeons in my province performing the RNY. I will be in the hospital for 5 days, and will be staying in Medicine hat for about 1 weeks after that, as he said he would prefer me near by....just in case! I will see him 8 weeks after surgery for a scope to make sure the stoma is big enough. My Doctor in Winnipeg will continue my aftercare program. He has performed many RNY's and I have been in contact with many of his post-ops and they are very happy with him and their results!
I liked him as soon as I met him,!
I liked him even more, he is easy going and a caring doctor.
I live 3 hours away so I don't see his office staff much but I like what I saw of them.
He talks to low !!
He is a good surgeon .!
I had some small problems and he was right there to look after me.
Not to strong on that point, needs more aftercare programs.
Yes he laid it all out for me, I knew the risk going in.
Well in my eyes he is a 10 out of 10.
They were both great!!
I have only had one consultation with Dr.Nohr, but so far he seems very caring. He explained to me in full detail the procedure involved and made sure that he thought I was mentally capable of handling the post-op. His office staff was excellent as originally I had my first consultation booked for mid July 2001. As it turned out, someone cancelled and they were able to get me in mid March 2001. My operation was 14 months from that date, and I now have only 1 month left to go. Any questions or concerns I have can be answered by his nurse, and if necessary, she will book me in to see him ASAP if I have questions.
Dr Nohr is Eupopean so he is very serious he knows his stuff. He is profesional Karen his nurse can be testy but her bark is worse that her bite.Dr Norh will not do the surgery if you are not sure it is something you are sure of.He doesnt have a very goog follow up program,so you will have to do lots of research on your own.He just says no refined sugar and make sure to blend every thing for 6 weeks. Then start adding soft food. The only way anything is answered is if you ask him a specific question.I would give him a 10 on his surgery but be side and after care a 6 or 5.I think the most important thing is you must be so ready if you are going to have the surgery.Read every thing you can about it and talk to people lots to.But most important go into the surgery with the most positive attuide you can. With thoughts of the future. These are just my thoughts on how my surgery went.
