My first impression of Dr. Naaman was he seems very proud of what he does.
I first met him at a seminar, You can tell he takes pride in the fact that he has been able to help so many people live longer healthier lives.
I then met him for a consult, and he was even nicer, I feel very confident in the choice I have made :)
His office staff is very helpful and I must say pretty darn patient, Because I know I have bugged the heck out of them some weeks and everytime I have gotten answers to my questions and the help I needed with no attitude.......
Dr. Naaman did answer all of my questions and at no time did I feel rushed.
He spoke with my husband as well and made sure he understood the risks and what life would be like after surgery. My husband who doesn't like anybody, LOL! seems very excited now for me and if Dr. Naaman was able to get my husband onboard with all of this, He's #1 in my book!
I urge anyone researching WLS surgery to go to one of his seminars even if u are still unsure of which surgeon to pick, You won't be sorry u went, Everyone is very nice.and you will walk away knowing more then u did about WLS.

I saw Dr. Ferrari First:
Dr. Ferrari and staff were great. They made a potetially nerve racking experience comfortable. Blanca (Dr.'s nurse) was a breath of fresh air with knowlege and support.

My only issue is that with my insurance (HAS) they say the 30,000 lifetime cap is not enouph to pay hospital (cy-fair) and Dr. so I have to pay the Dr. before I have surgery. Unfortunatly this means I have to look into a Dr. that uses a different hospital.

My overall feel of Dr. Ferrari's office was that it was more about the money.

Dr. Naaman:
First appointment 4/14. Dr. Naaman's First appointment was an Informational Seminar. He spoke to a room of about 30 - 40 WLS curious individuals. This was rather nice because he gave a very informative presetation of the two WLS options he offers and had an hour Q&A session. He answered each question with knowledge, honesty and a Smile. Kim and Amanda were very Friendly and knowledgeable as well. Recommeded Dr.

I was very impressed with Dr. Naaman and his staff. Very professional, very easy to understand. He has a great staff that are willing and eager to answer all your questions.

Aftercare is very important to Dr. Naaman. His staff will see you after your surgery for all of your checkups and they really watch what your eating and drinking for the first 6 weeks and the 6 weeks after that.

His surgical competence and bedside manner were tops for me. He sat with myself and my husband the day after surgery and answered alot of questions that I had not thought of during my initial consult. I would recommend him to anyone considering this type of surgery.

I pretty much knew what to expect when I called Dr. Naaman's office, thanks to this web site and all the information available.
They faxed me the registration packet as soon as I called. I filled out the registration form and diet history form and faxed this back along with a copy of my medical insurance card. I called to make sure they got my fax, and was told I needed to have a psychological evaluation along with a nutritional evaluation, and they gave me the names and #'s to call. I also have to get blood work with a thyroid screening. I have already been to see my dr. to get a copy of my weight loss medical records along with a letter of recommendation for wls. So, I guess I'm on my way. As soon as I get appts. for the above evaluations and get all my paperwork to Dr. Naaman's office, I'll hopefully get scheduled for my 1st consultation.
1-22-03 - 1st Consult. scheduled for Feb. 10th. Waiting for the Psych. Eval. appt. with Ruth Sherman took the longest, which was about a month. Oh well, at least I'm getting closer.
2/10/03 - Consult completed. Dr. Naaman was just as I expected, although he said treadmills were for only when it snows in Houston. It took all of 5 minutes to go over the surgery booklet. I didn't really have any questions since I am overly educated from the internet. Had to go to the lab to have some blood drawn for a 'bleeder' test. Amanda said that she would need about 10 days to get the paperwork together to send to the insurance company. So I wait again.
This whole process requires alot of patience, whether you have any or not.
2/27/03 - Had an appt. with a gastro...dr on 2/20. Set up another appt. for a gastroscopy on 2/27, which was today. My helicobactor count was high from the blood test I had on 2/10. Now I wait for 2 weeks to see if I have an ulcer. Have another appt. on 3/14 to go over the results of the scope.
In the mean time, I talked with my insurance company, and it's so confusing on who makes the final decision for approval of this surgery. The word I got today, is that there is an exlcusion for this in the plan and I will get a denial letter that I can appeal. My patience is wearing thin, it's too bad I'm not.
11/15/2004 - My 2nd attempt to have this surgery. My company AIG (3rd party admin. United Healthcare) has now decided to pay for this surgery starting in 2005. I contacted Dr. Naaman's office and I don't have to redo any of my tests. Just need another letter from my current physician and copy of current bloodwork. Bernice will send everything to United Health Care in January.
2/01/2005 - Still waiting on UHC approval. They didn't have the new plan information and sent me a denial letter stating plan exclusion. I had to appeal and send them the new plan information so someone would take a look at my request again. It's amazing that it's the patient's responsibility to provide the new plan information to the ins. co.
02/22/2005 - I've been calling every day to see what's going on with my case #. If you don't, they will ignore it for months. My dr's office had to reopen another reference # after the appeal dept. closed it and sent it back to pre-d. Pre-d. said it didn't have to go thru their dept. because it was a covered expense. There are too many departments to keep up with. Now I'm calling Care Coordination to find out the status of my new reference #. Found out today that I was finally approved.
AFTER 2 YEARS OF WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!
Will wait for my approval letter to schedule the surgery.
3-1-05 - Got approval letter.
3-16-05 - SURGERY!!!

I loved him right from the start. What a great man - not just a doctor.

Still the same impression of my doctor.

His office staff is wonderful and very understanding. They never treated me FAT, but one did say that she looked forward to seeing me skinny. WOW...what a blessing.

He is very understanding and very too the point...follow or don't loose.
Very much and very powerful in his follow through. His staff even called me to make sure I was walking.

Very lovely aftercare program...again...to the point.

He address the risk nicely and does not beat around the bush.

Dr. Naaman and Julius (assistant dr.) are excellent....10*** from a 10 rating.

Dr. Naaman will not hold your have so his bedside manner is not there. You make it yours and go with it. He is always there for you. His surgical competence is Excellent if not the best. LOVE HIM.

My first impression -- He is a straight talker. He won't try to sell you on the surgery. He will try to talk you out of it. He won't do it if you are not absolutely serious about taking control of your body, or if he thinks that you are blowing off the risks.

My impression did not change over time. He is deadly serious about saving your life. He won't let you sabotage yourself. If he thinks that you are not a good candidate for the surgery, he will tell you, and he won't do it. This is what I wan't from a surgeon. I don't want slick advertising and a Beverly Hills address. I want someone to whom my survival is as important as his own child's survival.

His staff is GREAT. I loved them all. Amanda files the insurance and makes sure all of the t's are crossed and i's are dotted. Bernice deals with appeals and putting all of the paperwork together. Julius is Dr. Naaman's assistant. He is VERY confident in Dr. Naaman's skills. I don't remember all of his other staff members names, because I dealt with them less often. But his staff is GREAT.

I won't lie to you -- it is up to YOU to get all of your previous medical history together and in Dr. Naaman's staff's hands. If you don't work hard on your end, they won't have much to work with. In the end, at the second appeal, because I have Aetna, and they simply didn't want to cover it, I had to write a letter myself and threaten to sue Aetna for failure to prevent my next bowel obstruction and hernia repair. 24 hours later, they approved it.

The hospital has a bariatric support group. Dr. Naaman encourages me to go to the meetings. But he told me that in the end, it is going to be up to me to lose the weight. And I am the only one who can sabotage that process. So I have to be the one who stops myself from doing that. So although he has structured post op visits, I don't think he has a structured aftercare program per se.

He was very blunt with me in addressing the risks of the surgery. He told me I will most likely go bald, because my hair is already thin. He told me that I might end of having to address the hernia again before I have lost all the weight. He told me I might end up having to have my gall bladder out. He told me that there was a chance he would have to open me up and do a traditional surgery instead of the laparoscopic procedure, because of my previous hernia repair. I got lucky. He didn't have to make a big incision. I have six 1/2 inch holes poked in me, and am feeling great for one week post op.

I would rate Dr. Naaman a solid 9.5, because nobody is perfect enough to rate a 10.

I will take surgical competence over bedside manner any day. It is my LIFE we are talking about. I don't care how warm and touchy feely a doctor is. His surgical competence is what matters to me any day. That being said, his bedside manner is very confident. He knows what he is doing. He listens to his patients. He addresses your fears, and if you aren't 100% sure of your decision, he won't operate. He will make sure that you and he are on the same page.

Dr. Naaman is a very competent doctor. His staff and medical office are the best I have encountered. His office manager, Bernice is absolutely awesome, very professional and understands the issues with the insurance companies. Dr. Naaman and Julius are very professional and very concerned about aftercare. I am comfortable with them because they are confident about the success of this procedure and it puts the patient at ease when they believe they are in skilled hands.
Dr. Naaman requires that his patients follow his meal directives and walk on a daily basis. He has a great support group who are very encouraging.
Dr. Naaman is one of the best weightloss surgery doctors in Texas. He has been featured on Fox News and in a documentary called, "Super Size Me." He is the best in Texas.

First impression of Dr. Naaman was that he is very confident, and rightly so, as far as I'm concerned. His staff is very friendly, loving and helpful. They are very adept at dealing with the insurance companies on your behalf. I suppose some potential patients would want to know that Dr. Naaman is very direct, and sort of no-nonsense. He's very available for responding to questions and concerns, but I don't think he's going to baby anyone. He places a good deal of importance on aftercare, and recognizes that once he's done his job, it's up to the patient from that point. Overall, given my experience with Dr. Naaman, and the results I've achieved, I would rate him and his staff very highly.

Dr. Naaman is a quiet, matter of fact type of doctor. I did not spend much time with him on my 1st visit but got to speak to his assistant and nurse in more detail.I have only seen him 1 time.

I was not impress with his staff over the phone but once I went in, I felt very comfortable in their knowledge about the surgery and what was expected of Dr Naaman, themselves and me.
Do not go into his office expecting a type of doctor that is going to coddle you.

Yes he has a support group that meets regularly, and he likes his patients to attend.
I spoke to him briefly about the risks.

From what I saw of him in the office and from what I know of him from other patients, I feel is very qualified in this surgery.
Surgical competence is much better than bedside manner.
