My frist visit with Dr. Wongsa is on Monday, Nov. 12,2001. I,m kind of nervous. But with all the good things I read about him, I feel like I am in good hands. I,ll update after my visit.
11/12/01 I met with Dr. Wongsa today. He is very straight forward. He said he would do the surgery if the insurance would approve me. He was worried about my BMI being so low. He said with the co-morbidies he would recommend the surgery to my insurance We will see if they approve it or not. I have to go for a mammogram and a scope down into my stomach before he can give me a date. I will update more after these test.^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
2-12-02 I saw Dr.Wongsa again today. He is AWSOME. I honestly believe if it were not for him I may have given up by now. He is very patient and honest about everything. The main thing I have to say to anyone researching him is, make sure you know every side to every situation. If you have done your full extent of research on him you will know what I am talking about. Just remember there are 2 sides to every story and make sure you get both sides. I believe he is a wonderful doctor. He has done this for a long time and I belive he knows what he is doing.
I cannot say enough about how impressionable and personal Dr. Wongsa, his nurse and right-hand, Ruth, and the rest of his staff are. As a rule, I have extremely limited patience with doctors, nursing and receptionist staff and hospitals (esp. if they are incompetent, arrogant or just plain STUPID). However, as busy as they are, they are amazingly helpful and pleasant.
I have complete confidence in his skills and I look forward to the whole adventure without significant worry. : )
*** Our instincts were right! Dr. Wongsa was a very good choice and we are extremely satisfied with the surgery and results. ***
I really, really liked Dr. Wongsa. He was very upfront about the risks of surgery and came well recommended. He seems to not only be a gifted surgeon but he has a great bedside manner. I feel confident in my decision to use him. I cannot say enough about Ruth on his office staff! She is absolutely awesome! I had some problems with Cy Fair hospital in the beginning. They wanted me to pay $10 K due to them being out of network for my insurance. I was so upset thinking that I was going to have to switch surgeons. Ruth called and cleared this up for me without me asking...and I am going to be able to have my surgery at Cy Fair. Everytime I've called, she has taken the time to talk to me without rushing and has been very patient. When I went for my medical clearance at a PCP, the Nurse Practicioner said she had surgery with Dr. Wongsa in August. She has lost 96 lbs. and is doing very well. She has 12 patients that have used Dr. Wongsa as well. So far, I am very pleased and will update more after surgery.
Dr Jay seems like a very nice, patient man. He has very small features and is soft spoken. The Neweigh office was great and the people were very friendly. They even offered me something to drink while I was waiting for my appt. Neweigh has a wonderful aftercare program also.
Well I've changed surgeons to Dr. Wongsa. I have to call Neweigh today and tell them. My insurance doesn't have contracts with the hospital that Dr J wants to use and therefore the fees could be very high. I can't risk that! I really like Dr. Wongsa. He is very straightforward and honest. He even tried to talk me out of having surgery. He said I wasn't very big! That was sweet but I feel big! His office has been very accomodating in trying to get me scheduled for surgery asap, I am now scheduled for Feb. 13.
My first impression was "It's about time!" Someone who told you like it was but you knew he was honestly there to make you look and feel better. It didn't and I am glad. He is a very caring man. His office staff is very helpful. They answered all my pre and post op jitters. When I was waiting to go into the operating room he came to my bedside and asked me how I was doing and held my hand. Up until then I was a nervous wreck he made me feel very comfortable. Be prepared when you go see him do research and make sure this is what you want to do. There is no real aftrercare support group with him but anytime I needed something answered I called and was treated very professionally. He is very upfront about the risk of surgery and the risk of not having the surgery. He wants you to be perfectly clear on what you are getting into. No split decisions for him. I definitely will give him a 10+. The things I was looking for was obviously competence which he has and he has great bedside manner as well. You can't beat this doctor he is the best.
I meet Dr. Wongsa yesterday, Jan. 7. I previously read some information on this website about his office and I can't say that had the same impression of the state of his office. I found Dr. Wongsa's office to be very nice.
Dee came out and weighed me, measured me and gave me the whole low-down on my obesity. I am 214 lbs. 5'2" and my BMI is 39.75. I am 2lbs shy of having immediate approval from my insurance company.
Dr. Wongsa came to get me from the waiting room. As others have said he is very nice and his English is excellent. He seems
honest, truly caring and concerned about
my well-being. He also pulls no punches. He is very upfront with the "risks" associated with WLS. I appreciate his candor.
As far as his competence, he has performed over 400 Lap RNY's. He has had 4 people that have had problems with blood clots but they were in the first 100 patients. He said the most common risk is blockage from not chewing your food enough. He also said there is a non invasive procedure to enlarge the opening if that is needed. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery. I feel very confident in his skills.
He does not have a structered aftercare program but the hospital does. There are also a couple of people at my company that have undergone WLS so we can help eachother.
I met with dr. wongsa on 12/21/01 he was very nice and took the time to explain things to me about the surgery altho he stated he did not think the insurance would approve me he said that he was sure the insurance company would not feel i was fat enough or sick enough that i needed to be at least 40 more pounds over weight. my ins. company stated i needed to be 100lbs. over i am at 5'6 and 230 to 240 that is 100lbs. he said at the time i was 226 but i had been sick and befor that on another diet were i lost 22lbs. but had started gaining it back after 2weeks. i am now at 230 again sooo i just have to see what happens next. PLEASE PRAY for me and let the ins. company come thru.
