I am a healthcare provider myself and find it every interesting how people evaluate their healthcare providers. Dr. Berkowitz, was professional - but not over the top. Easy to relate to. Made sure all of my questions were answered and did not treat me like I should know the answers or that I don't have an edication to start with. He did seem to be worried about my time as it was a 8 hour drive to get to the facility. I was an end of the day end of the week appointment so I could sense the fatique in the staff but not lack of concern or patientce or desire to care for me completely. I did arrive almost an hour early because it was my first visit and I was not sure how long it would take me to find it - they moved me up and took me right away. He was very good about reviewing the risks and provided no pressure for any desicion in either direction. I was also impressed that he was aware of insurance requirements and made sure I would qualify - I know alot of Dr.s that don't care about that. I do not feel comfortable rating him overall until after surgery, but very high on the first visit.
I have only met with Dr. Berkowitz once, as I have been denied by insurance. In that one meeting however, Dr. Berkowitz was very informative on the operation, not giving me information that was "over my head". He was very caring to my condition and listened to me openly.
I felt very comfortable listening to him and explaining my situation. Just wish I could have him do the surgery.
My first impression of Dr.Berkowitz was that he was very nice and seemed experienced with people having weight loss surgery. He made me feel at ease and wasn't critical of my weight problem like so many doctors have been. I came in with a list of questions and he answered every one untill I was comfortable with everything.
His office staff has been very friendly and understanding and he has staff that have been through the surgery wich is helpful!.My only cmplaint is I am not sure if he over books patients or they need a better system but it is becoming the norm to be rescheduled at the last minute which is a major inconvenience.
I am still very satisfied with Dr.Berkowitz as a surgeon.I would recomend him to anyone thinking of this surgery.
Dr. Berkowitz explained the procedure in detail to my husband and I. He used plain language and a chalk board for illustrations.
He answered all my questions and did not try to hurry through my consultation.
Dr. Berkowitz's staff was kind and helpful.
The entire consultation was done on a timely basis from the time I arrived to the time I left the clinic.
Bariatric Treatment Center is a well-run program from the initial contact through the consultation, insurance approval and surgery scheduling. I talked to my counselor, Connie, about December 20--there was a cancellation so I was able to have my Consultation on January 3. I was accepted as a candidate for surgery. The paperwork was completed, sent to Michigan, then to Blue Cross for approval. Blue Cross received the paperwork on January 15 and I was approved on January 15; the paperwork was faxed back to the BTC. I visited with May and Diane about my surgery scheduling. Because of another cancellation, I could have my surgery on February 4 or February 6.
Since it was a busy month at my place of employment I decided to select March 3.
Dr. Berkowitz performed my daughter's surgery on April 10, 2001. She has lost 210 pounds and is close to her goal--she looks great and feels great and has had very few problems. I am excited about my surgery so I can look great and feel great!

My first impression of Dr. Berkowitz was great. He seemed to have a very pleasant bedside manner, took his time and was very knowledgeable.
He made me very comfortable, I didn't feel like I was taking SATs or was going to be tested on what I was told.
His staff was very polite, they did seem hurried, (I was the last appointment of the day). I did wish I would have taken my tape recorder.
This probably sounds bad but he seemed really short, I am pretty tall and I figured me on the OR table I hope he can get to everything. I am sure he handles this just fine. He probably is tall enough.
Future patients should be able to ask any questions that come to their mind, no matter how simple or direct. I asked him how many patients he had killed, he laughed, and said well my ratio is 1.41%! Guess it was an ice breaker.
I feel with my appointments at 2, 4, 6 weeks and probably more my aftercare will be great. If not my PCP, who is an internist will be watching my progress.
I know all risks of this procedure, and anything I am not sure about I research and ask him if this is true or possible.
Overall a 9. Only reason not a ten, was because I felt rushed by staff.
Surgical compentence is most important to me. If I trust a doctor and his skills then his bedside manner may be excused. Dr. Berkowitz is very professional so he has both, which is most desireable!
I first saw my surgeon in the waiting room, he walked in and said Hi, like he knew me, but I had no idea who he was. At our first meeting I knew I had made the right decision and was very comfortable with Dr. Berkowitz
At my 6-week check up, he again gave words of encouragement, and was very happy with my scar, said it was some of his best work.
All the nurses at the BTC were the best too, especially Toni! She was great!
I was originally to have Dr.Boe do the surgery. I had my initial consultation with him. He was very informative and I felt comfortable with him.He was very upfront with risks involved. On the day of my surgery (I had driven 5 hours) I was informed that he was ill and would not be there. I was told Dr. Berkowitz would do the surgery since I had driven so far. I met hem before making a decision. I went ahead with the surgery and everything thus far has turned out well.
The staff is very good. I was impressed with the preop. they are very organized and you get to speak to different depts. that have to do with your care in the hospital.
Dr. Boe came in the next day and apologized for not being there for my surgery. He checked on me the next day also. I did not see Dr. Berkowitz again until my 2 week appt. He is also very nice and had no problems with him. I thought maybe he should have come by and checked to see how I was doing. Maybe he did and I was sleeping. I am healing fine and think they all did a great job.
