I have not met my surgeon yet. When I attended my seminar, it was with a different doctor who had just started doing the surgery. I picked Dr. Gaskin purely by what I had heard from a friend who went to him for her surgery. I look forward to talking with him.
Dr. Gaskin is very knowledgeable and confident in what he is doing. He gives you straight answers, I like that in a doctor. He could spend a bit more time on his bedside manner, but he's not scary or anything, just a bit distant. Aftercare consisted of 1-2 visits in the hospital, a follow-up visit in his office after 1 month and another at 1 year, unless there are problems. Anytime I had a question, I would phone in to his office and speak with Mary, his nurse. I would rather to have spoken with the doctor. Since this surgery is such a big deal, I would have felt more comfortable if he had a little one on one contact and conversations with me, although Mary is very helpful. I had no complications after my surgery other than normal expected changes. I feel that surgical competence is of great importance and Dr. Gaskin has plenty from my experience. Beside manner is equally important and Dr. Gaskin could spend a bit more time with the patient.
I was very impressed with Dr. Gaskin and his medical staff at SouthPointe Hospital. Dr. Gaskin visited me everyday and ensured I was doing alright. The nurses at the hospital were extremely nice and concerned with my well being.
The thing I liked the least was that he didn't release me until after 12noon on Sunday and we had to drive back to Kansas City from St. Louis - - apprx a 4 hour drive.
Dr. Gaskin works with a program called New Start and they have their own nutrionist, who I met with prior to surgery.
I really like Dr. Gaskins! He has only been doing this surgery for three years and is excellent at it, and was excellent before he started doing RNY exclusively according to a nurse who works with him. He takes his time with you and answers all of your questions and is very pleasant. He is honest and readily addresses the risks of the surgery. I highly recommend him.
I thought Dr. Gaskin was very professional but was willing to answer all questions. He was friendly and helpful. His office staff is the BEST! They always answer my calls and get the answers I need that same day. Dr. Gaskin is very relaxed about the surgery but this is a relatively routine procedure for him because he is really reknowned for his microscopic bowel procedures. He does the gastric bypass because he enjoys helping people feel better about themselves. His care is simple but he does want you to follow his rules, which are few. He was very careful to address any risks involved and went over them verbally as well as giving you a pamphlet to read. I rate him a 12 on a scale of 1 to 10.
gr. gaskin was very personable. he was running late in his office visit's due to surgery and was very appologetic. he didn't rush us and was eager to answer all our questions. i have every confidence in his ability and not concerned in the least. 6\24 dr. gaskin was the best. his concern for myself and my family was beyond expectation. i only wish the outcome hadf been different
Ok, Dr.Gaskin will be my surgeon, this has changed from Dr. Mitchell since Dr. Mitchell will no longer have a private practice. My first impression that he has a lot of energy, believes in this surgery, is knowledgeable, and likes to joke alot. I won't meet his staff until June 17th, the day before my surgery. Since his time was limited at the seminar, the people at New Start were great about answering initial questions and explaining the procedures, aftercare, etc. They also, as well as Dr. Gaskin, went into the risks of surgery.

Well, I met Dr. Gaskin 5/20/02. He was an hour and 1/2 late to the appointment - but it was worth it. He calmed my fears and my mother's. He was not rushed - a perfect gentleman. He did the surgery in just over an hour - and I never even had to go the the ICU. He's the best! He has a wonderful bedside manor.
