Less than 1 star. I am 11 years post op and will be having the surgery again because my old stomach and new stomach are fully connected again. Obviously this is not something that occured over night and several doctors missed it as they kept throwing pills at my severe acid reflux. However, I feel that this should have been something I was warned about and I was not. Dr. Gaskin also has MANY lawsuits against him. If he is your surgeon RUN RUN RUN. I wouldn't wish him on my worst enemy.
My husband and I met him only the day before the surgery. He seemed competent and listened to us. He didn't rush us through the visit and answered our questions fully and intelligently. My husband, an attorney, even grilled him a bit (occupational hazard), and Dr Gaskin handled it well.
The surgery went well - the usual complaints afterward, pain, etc. Dr Gaskin was fine - the nursing staff at the hospital left a lot to be desired, though.
I was scheduled for a follow-up visit in December, but was contacted in December with information that Dr Gaskin would not be able to keep that appointment because he would be on vacation for the entire month of December. So, I made an appointment for Monday, January 6th in the morning. On Saturday, January 4th, I received a letter in the mail - keep in mind I live 3 hours from Dr Gaskin's office - telling me that the appointment would not be able to be kept and that another letter would follow to explain. Well, I had already arranged to be off work from both of my jobs to make this appointment, so on Monday, the 6th, I called the office to find out what was going on. I was told that Dr Gaskin had decided to retire and would not be able to see me. WHAT?????!!!! Well, it seems that the astronomical cost of malpractice insurance had forced him into retirement.
I was referred to Dr Fabito, who I had and still have no interest in seeing ( I've heard many negative things about him ). So, seven months post-op, I still have not had a follow-up visit and I suppose I just won't. I can't get a surgeon in my town to even talk to me since no one here does the procedure. I am feeling fine and losing weight, so I just let it slide.
I was not overly impressed. To me, it was more of a way to make a quick buck with him. I probably haven't spent 20 minutes with him other than my surgery. I saw him briefly the day prior to surgery and again for my 6 week follow-up. I was not to see him again until 1 year out, but he is no longer practicing, so I won't be seeing him.

**01/29/03** I'm very sad to report that as of January 6, 2003 Dr. Gaskin has retired due to the ever increasing cost of malpractice inurance.... I'll miss so much the man that has given me back a life!

**03/11/02** Dr. Gaskin is WONDERFUL. Did I mention GREAT? HE does beautiful work! And uses the littliest staples I've ever seen. OKay - that's all the excitment I can handle nap time :)

**02/17/02** Well, Dr. Gaskin agreed to take me on and do my surgery on March 5th @ 6am. I get to meet him on March 4th sometime in the afternoon. He does things a bit differetn than Doctor Mitchell but I'm okay with that. I've heard nothing but rave reviews about him so I am very excited to meet him!

**02/14/02**I got cancelled by Dr. Mitchell today. Actually he canceled all his gastric bypass surgeries. I have transferred to Dr. R. Gaskin who works out of Forest Park Hospital and O have a penciled in date of March 4th...

**07/02/01** I had my inital consult today with Dr. Mitchell -- and its a GO!! I barely had time to finish me 3 sheets of paperwork before I was taken back to his office. I found him very compelled to fully answer questions. He took his time and was very understanding. He went over some things I had already learned in the seminar but I was appriciative of his repetitiveness. I am very happy with having Dr. Mitchell as my surgeon. Stephine - his nurse was the sweetest girl ever. She was very helpful and has a great personality...

**06/25/01** I changed doctors!! (better now than later) I found the staff @ Dr. Yate's Office very rude and short. I called Dr. Mitchell's Office this morning and the staff there was soooooooooooooooooo very nice and even squeezed my appointment in. Isn't that the best? My appointment is July 2nd @ 9:45am --- heading towards my independence day :)

**06/19/01** Called the New Start Program today through Southpointe Hospital. Everyone was very nice and supportive and they are going to help me through my journey step by step! Apparently I will recieve a medical packet (a small novel of forms) to fill out on my medical history and such. After returning the forms I am supposed to go to a seminar @ Forest Park Hospital given by the group of doctors that started "New Start". My PCP is out on maternity leave until Aug. -so I prescheduled an appointment on August 8th to get her 'consent' and the required letters.- Any suggestion sto make it as easy for her as possible? Thanks :) ~K

Dr. Gaskin is a great guy. I feel very fortunate to have him as my surgeon. He answered all of my questions completely and was able to calm my crazy nerves. He seems very confident and positive. The nurse who checked my BP and temp was also very friendly.
I will say that I was a bit suprized that their waiting room wasn't more prepared for obese folks. The chair was a bit snug for me, and I'm certain that there are many patients who are considerably larger than myself who are unable to sit down in the waiting room.
