First impression was knowledgeable, well spoken, very experienced. Change of impression was to recognize his sense of humor and the reinforcement of his competence. Office staff was lightweight (inexperienced) and disorganized (new office). Medical staff was superior and nursing staff at hospital was outstanding. Easy to misread Dr Marema's experience level as condescension, you have to keep in mind the over 5500 surgeries that he has performed. Experience, especially at this level, counts. Future patients should definitely attend his free information seminar at least a couple of times, and try not to have preconceived notions of what surgery they want. Don’t hesitate to do your research after the seminars, and then refine the pros and cons on each surgery. Make your final decision with input from the Doctor and Staff. rnFollow up is stressed, nutrition and supplements are monitored, exercise is defined, and so far (I’m at 1 month post op), I’ve been interview by staff and Doctor 3 times. Structure of aftercare is improving, and organized exercise center is in the works. Weight monitoring and nutritional monitoring are excellent.rnMajor surgery (I had Roux-en-Y) is major surgery. Contemplate what is going on, and you should see that this isn’t something to be entered into lightly. I was a type II diabetic, and, as I told Dr Marema, I’d rather gamble on one surgery to correct the problem than several as they slowly lop off my toes and feet. Laparoscopic surgery is certainly a big improvement in recovery time and levels of pain. I was operated on at 11am on Wednesday, discharged on Friday at 2pm and returned to work on Monday.rnAs far as my surgeon goes, I can’t say enough good things about him and the medical staff. I had looked into this surgery in Pennsylvania about 5 years ago and aborted the process because I just was satisfied with the surgeon’s level of expertise. That surgeon just didn’t project the level of competence that I needed. It was completely the opposite with Dr Marema. In fact, I was so impressed at the first seminar and the subsequent research period afterwards, that I doubted the results and asked several friends and family to crosscheck my results. It just appeared too good to be true. But several seminars later, all agreed and I signed up. In my mind, surgical competence is more important than bedside manner, but if you can get both, why not go for it? Finally, my biggest complaint if any is that a formal exercise class isn't yet part of program.rn

Dr Marema was such a refreshing and caring person. He was so easy to talk with and acted as if he had all the time in the world. I found I did not prepare properly, as I didn't have all my questions together. Who would have thought, I would have so much time with him. rnrnHe is also an example of the results of the surgery. He has had the procedure and now looks tall, slim, healthy and handsome.rnrnHis communication skills was light and pleasant butrntruly made you feel confident in his knowledge and ability.rnrnI will keep this updated as my journey travels forward.
I used Dr. Marema at Holy Cross in Ft. Lauderdale. I went to him based on his reputation. I found his nurses to be the most helpful. They were always available when I needed their guidance.rnrnDr. Marema was very upfront with the surgery and the life change I would need to make in conjunction with the surgery.rnrnI would definately recommend him and US Bariatrics.
My first impression of Dr. Marema is he was goofy but nice. As time has gone on he is still nice but very insightful and honest. His staff is great. So far not much I don't like his bedside manner is awesome. rnrnTo answer what future patients should know about him is he has had the surgery and he knows what it is all about. He is also all about the after care and making sure you are on the right track. rnrnHe was also very upfront about the risks of surgery and very insightful.rnrnOver all i give him on a scale of 1 to 10 a 15+!rnrnhis surgical competence and bedside mannor are great. rnrnHe has done over 5,500 surgeries and has taught many others this surgery!
Very knowledgeable, professional and kind. My first impressions did not change. Cheerful and helpful staff. No dislikes of Dr. Marema at all! Excellent Dr. - after much research of the precedure and Dr. Marema, I came from Toledo, OH to St. Augustine, FLA to have him do my surgey - Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass! Aftercare is very much emphasized. Yes. Dr. Marema addressed all risks of surgery. Both surgical competence and bedside manner are great.rnrnrnI rate Dr. Marema a 10!!
I had heard of Dr. Marema from a friend who had the surgery done by him last year. He seemed a capable surgeon and I had enough confidence in him to have him do the surgery. I felt a little as if he spent a lot of time selling the surgery in the information sessions he hosts and did not seem as caring as his partner, Dr. Kim. His office staff is great and they have a great aftercare program. I'd rate him a 7 out of 10
The sirgery was done at Celebration Hospital in Celebration FL on 11/29/06. Drs. Marema and Kim are with U. S. Bariatrics.rn My first imoression was that he was very busy, but did not rush me. He explained everything about surgery and aftercare to my family and me. He was 2.5 hours late and has been late for every appointment. He can be gentle and caring and kick butt if needed. I understand that he practises in Fort Lauderdale and that effective June, he will decrease his Celebration office hours to the 1st and 3rd Mondays only. This makes it difficult to contact him for unscheduled appointments.rn Dr. Kieth Kim is in practise with him and is very good and caring. I saw him in an emergency and subsequent hospitilization. He is available for emergencies.rn The office staff is very professional and willing to assist in any way.rn Aftercare is very important. When I go for a follow up appt., I meet with the nurse, doctor, nutritionist and exercise physiologist. There are monthly support groups and on linew help. Email is used alot for Q & A for support staff.rn Both drs. have a good bedside manner and are surgical outstanding.rn
I liked Dr. Marema because he had had the surgery himself. He is very personable and his office staff seems very nice. I think the Celebration Hospital is probably one of the best for bariatric surgeries. However, at my last visit (6months), I wasn't real impressed with my visit. Although I had lost 100 pounds, Dr. Marema said I was below a certain percentage. I felt 100 pounds was a great weight loss in 6 months. Anyway, it upset me and I cried on my way home from the visit. It made me feel like he thought I wasn't doing well when I felt like I had really done the best I could do. He said the exercise place I go to wasn't good enough. I needed to do more and be more strenuous with my exercising. This did put him down a notch in my rating of him. I think that his numbers mean more than his patients do. I'm not sure at this point if I will follow through and go to my 1 year checkup. I might just skip it at this point.
