Dr. Marema is one of the most talented, caring, focused, and empathic surgeons I have ever met (and I work in healthcare as an occupational therapist).
He has a very comprehensive weight loss surgery program including Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon support group meetings, and he uses a multidisciplinary approach to his surgical interventions for morbid obesity.
When searching for a surgeon who performs weight loss surgery, you might find surgeons who have a more public name, but I sincerely doubt that you will find a surgeon who is more talented, caring, and who has better results.

He is really wonderful and his staff is really great too. They are always very friendly and helpful with any concerts you may have. He does the surgery lap or open so you have a choose. Also, has a great support group that meets twice a month. In the meetings they have a nurse that gives you a B-12 shot which is much needed after surgery and also sells everything you need when it comes to vitamines. I think that beside Dr. Marema being so nice what I really liked was that he himself had the surgery so he knows how it feels to be a fat person and what we go through in our lives.
I recommend him highly.

An absolutely wonderful, caring, patient, understanding man.

He and his staff can truly relate - they have had the surgery themselves.

My first appointment with the surgeon was the day after hurricane warnings were posted for Hurricane Floyd in South Florida. Needless to say the surgeon was not in the office, however I did meet with a member of his staff who reviewed everything thoroughly. In addition to this meeting, I attended one of the doctor's introductory sessions to WLS. Both experiences have left me with a very positive impression of this doctor's practice. All aspects of the surgery were addressed and the staff encouraged questions. I was not rushed through the first appointment and all of my questions were answered. This doctor does have a structured aftercare program and I was encouraged to participate in it. In addition, the staff was very aware of insurance requirements and proactively addressed what would be required for an insurance approval.

The first time I saw him was at the orientation meeting.
He was very motivating and I was impressed
with the thoroughness of his presentation.

9/19/99 I met with the doctor and his staff
again and they were very nice, positive and
empathetic. I feel comfortable with this group of
people.

10/6/99 I have been in contact with the office staff and they
are very supportive and encouraging. Good vibes.

My first impression of Dr. Marema was encouraging. He had the same operation that I am planning doing. The doctor that did his operation was Dr. Foby in California. You should see him now!!!! In fact, today I went for my last visit before my surgery. I have been scheduled on October 13th which is
next week!!! I must admit, I am a bit nervous though. His office staff is very helpful and most of them have had a gastric bypass done too. When I arrived today, there were several people in the waiting room, most were post-op. I spoke with a few of them about their experience. On the most part, they were pleased about the operation. Only one person said she was having alot of trouble with fatigue and has absolutly no appetite. One man was 17days post-op and has lost 45lbs already, one woman was 10mo's post-op and lost 180lbs., and another lady was 3 mo's post op and lost 60 lbs!!!!! They all had a story to tell about their experiences, and I was eager to hear them. So far, I am very optimistic about this. The doctor, staff, and some of his patients have had nothing terribly bad to say about the procedure. Well, I will update more AFTER my surgery, and hopefully I will have a pleasant story to tell about this.......I am so ready to start my living my life again!!!!!!! Wish me luck :-)

Dr. Marema is extremely busy, not only with WLS surgery but general surgery as well. He has an excellent sense of humor and has a knack for putting you at ease. He provides his beeper number to his patients and calls back relatively fast, sometimes from the OR. Him and his staff have all had WLS. They are friendly, helpful, and understanding. Their program is carefully laid out and topnotch. I was not totally impressed with Holy Cross Hospital but they were set up to accomodate bariatric patients 100%.

Having Dr. Marema as a surgeon is probably the best medical experience of my life. From the first group orientation meeting where all aspects of the surgery were spelled out (including the risks), through surgery and now post-op, I have been impressed with the care and dedication of his office. Phone calls are encouraged so you can be sure of doing the right thing. Support groups are held twice a month to help everyone from undecided people to post-op patients and Dr. Marema is always there.
