Serene, that's the only word I can use to describe Dr. Marema. He was so calm, cool and collected. He instilled great confidence and a sense of caring. My impression of him has not changed over time. Most of the people on his staff have undergone the procedure, it is not a requirement, it just happens that people whom he has helped end up wanting to help others. They are wonderful, every last one of them. The only thing I don't like about his is that he's so busy, but what doctor isn't. I would definitely let others know about him. I trusted him with my life and I think he worked a small miracle.
He encourages monthly support group meetings after surgery. His group is called "New Beginnings." He does not minimize the dangers of surgery, but he does highlight the benefits.
I would rate him a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10. His surgical competence is outstanding and he has a great bedside manner.
After spending hours on the net and at this website, I kept reading raving reviews about Dr. Marema. Word of mouth speaks waves, so I decided to go to one of his Monday night seminars. he gave the presentation himself, and my first impression of him was excellent. he was compassionate and NEVER demeaning. His understanding is genuine considering he, too, has had this surgery done. Dr. Fobi did his surgery and Dr. Marema practices this technique. This was another one of my deciding factors. He gave an excellent slide presentation explaining the surgery, his technique in detail, the anatomy that will be altered, potential risks, and complications. He had percentages and stats on the sugeries he has performed and presented them in the slide show as well. He also went over post-op care and the importance of diet and exercise for the best possible results. Then we got to meet his staff. Most of his staff has also had this surgery peformed on them by Dr. Marema himself, even his wife! Now that is a great reputation! lol After the slide show, his nurse, Debbie (who was great-she is so knowledgeable!)had an informal Q & A session. Then his staff called each of us back, weighed us, made copies of our license's, insurance info, and set an appointment for our "long" 3 hour seminar with Debbie. I believe during this meeting she goes over, in all it's gory details, the intricacies of the surgery pre, during, and post-op.I guess it is meant to give you a "reality check" as to what you are getting yourself into. (I think at this point, if you haven't educated yourself enough to pretty much know what to expect, then you need to do your homework!). The ONLY negative thing I could possibly think of was that he was kind of rushed to get to another appointment that night. But hey, he's a doctor! I think I found a great combination of surgical competence and bedside manner in Dr. Marema. Just read all his patient's reviews yourself!
Dr. Marema is a WLS patient as well. This makes him most understanding of what process his patients are going through.
I still remain very comfortable and confident with the Doctor.
Aftercare is a vital part of his program, and he has arranged for a dietican that has had the surgery as well to assist in the post op nutritional needs.
Dr Marema is a wonderful surgeon, and a dedicated professional, Dr Marema has a great sense of humor and a terrfic bedside manor. He is very informative on all aspects of this surgery, he lets you know right up front what is going to happen, Dr Marema has saved my life in so many ways, I had my surgery in June of '99 and I cant tell you the difference in my life, is a miracle. The Staff at the office, is absolutely the best that anyone could ever ask for, They all have had the surgery, so they can tell you from experience whats happening, They are all very professional and care so much, I have nothing but very strong positive things to say about this whole team. Dr Marema cares mores about his patients than any other doctor that I have ever seen. He is there for you for Life and thats a big thing now a days. And for future patients that are thinking about this surgery, Stop thinking and just do it, Start living your life to the fullest that it could be. And you will not find a better surgeon to help you with it. Dr Marema tells you all the risks that are involed, and also lets you know of the postive attributes of this surgery. He is very informative in every detail of this surgery, and also educates you, so you know exactly whats going on. I cant say enough about this man or his staff. I would recommend Dr Marema for anyone to have this surgery, Hey I let him perform it on me... in closing, For me this was a very positive experince and it is the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life and I have Dr Marema to thank for it.
Very friendly, and sincere. He, his wife and half of his staff have had the surgery, and look and feel great. He has done over 700 surgerys and has lost only 3 patients. He has a full compliment staff (educator, psych.therapy)He insist on a full educational program prior to surgery, and follows you for life after, with a full aftercare program.I am looking forward to surgery with Dr. Marema.
I have only just begun the process, I went to an informational seminar Dr. Marema holds each week in his office. Dr. Marema and his wife have both had the surgery. Met his office staff (all of which have had successful surgeries). All made me feel very comfortable. Dr. went over at length about the possibility of complications. He has a support group which meets each month for pre/post surgery patients. Since I have not had a "one-on-one" with him yet, I can only go on my first impression, which was very positive. I have my first appointment with him on April 5. Very much looking forward to it....
Meeting Dr Robert Marema and his staff on November 29th for the informational meeting from 6-7 pm. Will let you know how it goes and when my surgery is.
NOV 30th: The meeting was great! Very informative and encouraging. Just seeing the Dr and what he looks like now after losing weight (and his skinny staff) was worth the trip. I mean these people were BONES!! LOL...I guess you could say "goal weight" But to think you don't have to settle for just "not too fat", but "skinny" is possible. WOW WOW WOW!!! Also I got to meet some great ladies from OSSG list Im on, Candace and Jean. I hope we can get it done at the same time so we can comiserate together via the web. I will keep you posted on my progress after Dec 21st meeting.
Dec 21st: The office visit went well. The staff is nice and so is Dr M. I was told that I need to get a blood test and pych done before they could schedule surgery. Right now they are booked until mid Feb, so Im thinking it will be late Feb 2000 for me. I am going to start working Dec 22 on getting these test done so I can get a date ASAP. I just really want the finality of knowing a certain date, not being in limbo! I should hear back from the dr. ofc next week or so with a date for meeting the dietician. I will keep you all posted!
Feb 10th: Only 8 days until surgery! AHHH its so close! I have been to the dr. several times and I really like them.
Overall I would recommend this dr and his staff to anyone looking.
I liked Dr. Marema since I saw him. He himself has undergone bariatric surgery, and was obese at one time. He is very sympathetic. His office staff is very good.
The contact I have had with him and his staff is very positive. They have a structured program with aftercare, dieticians, psychologists, and a staff who several have undergone the surgery. He answers all questions I felt he was sincere. He addresses risks and has a pamphlets explaing the pre-op stages and after surgery.
I have not had my surgery yet, I have seen Dr. Marema 3 times. First time informative seminar ( around 30 people), first consultation one on one, and in a support group.
I recommend Dr. Marema to anyone in the Florida area.
