My first meeting with Dr. Marema was in late Dec. 2002. He easily met my criteria for both demeanor and expertise (and I have dealt with surgeons since the age of 11). Of course, much of what I had learned about his skills came from this helpful Web site.
Dr. Marema is calm, self-effacing, and answered my questions (mostly about risks) thoroughly; he also questioned me to see how well I understood the operation, recovery, etc.
The only inconvenience/concern I had was when the doctor at the Celebration office, near my home, had left the practice (U.S. Bariatric) and for a while it looked as though that office would be closed, which would have meant driving to Ft. Lauderdale for follow-up appointments. That, however, has been remedied and the Celebration office remains open.
U.S. Bariatric has a step-by-step program for their patients; info about the process: before, during and after surgery is well organized and taught. The staff is very helpful, informative and patient.
One note: Dr. Marema does not deal with BC/BS insurance; so, if that is your insurance plan, don't expect much reimbursement from them.
Dr. Marema really impressed me the first time I went to his info session. I had gone in support of my daughter and found that the information really intrigued me because of the statistics in helping with co morbidities. My impression of Dr. Marema only gets better and better with time. He performed surgery on my daughter 10 months ago, and she has lost 127 pounds. Now, after fighting 1 1/2 with another insurance company (Vista), I have been approved by Humana. His office staff is wonderful -- many of whom have had the surgery and know first hand what it is to be a bariatric patient. What I particularly like about Dr. Marema and U.S. Bariatric is that it is a comprehensive program. Anyone who goes through their office becomes educated in the procedure both before and after. The support groups are usually referred to as resource meetings since one always finds out something from someone in making this road easier. It is always a learning experience. Things are not "sugar coated", but you do learn solutions and ways to handle any problems. I rate Dr. Marema's surgical competence and his bedside manner, superb with a 10+++++++++++++++++.
I WENT TO HIS TUESDAY'S NIGTH FORUMS THEY ARE VERY INFORMATIVE, FRIENDS OF MINE THAT ALREADY HAD SURGERY SAID THAT HE IS A GREAT DOCTOR. I WAS APPROVED BY UNITED HEALTH CARE RIGHT AWAY, ON OCTOBER 2000, BUT MY MOM SWITCHED JOB AND NOW HAS A DIFFERENT HEALTH INSURANCE, BBS PPO, AND THE DOCTOR IS NOT A PARTICIPANT OF THIS INSURANCE. I WILL HAVE TO PAY THE PHYSICIANS FEE AT FRONT BEFORE SURGERY, I CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY. I AM LOOKING FOR ANOTHER DOCTOR THAT WILL TAKE MY INSURANCE.
I have yet to meet Dr. Marema, I had met Dr. Krahn who was working with the US Bariatic group in Orlando before he decided to leave this last Friday. So, most of us in Orlando have been moved to have our surgery in Ft. Lauderdale. The program is the best around!! I didn't want to be the patient who was "cut and run", that I have seen with other surgeons!! The support staff is great, I had insurance approval within 2 days!! I'll let you know how things go!!
I was very excited that Dr. Marema was going to be my surgeon. I had heard so many great things about him. I was very impressed when I first met him, he has a great sense of humor, seemed caring and very confident of his work. I had my 2 week post-op in his Ft. Lauderdale office where I met some of the office staff, they were very accommodating and courteous. I had met one of his associates Dr. Bonitz who came to do rounds in the hospital and Dr. Diaz was in the office for my 2 week appt. Both of the gentlemen were very proffessional. Dr. Diaz emphasized my aftercare, as well as Whitney, the RN in Ft. Lauderdale. I have been doing just as the Dr. says. Dr. Marema did address the risks of the surgery at my pre-op appt with him, and answered my questions very honestly. I think he's great. Couldn't ask for better surgical competence or bedside manner.
I finally met The Man himself Dr Marema.. I met him on December 17th 2002 he is very tall and very busy.. He walked right into the room and shook my hand and was really nice.. There was a bit of a wait in the room but I knew that coming into see him so I just took a seat and read up on my paperwork.. Dr MArema has a complete program at U.S. Bariactrics they just don't operate on you and send you on your way they deal with your body, spirit and mind. Very Structured aftercare program.. The Risks are there and if you do your research you'll know them all.. I can't rate him yet because my surgery is Jan. 8th 2003 From what I read and what Ive heard from other's he seems to be a very competent surgeon and I liked his aftercare program.. These are my thoughts so everybody has to do their own research and decide on their own..
He was'nt the first doctor for this I when to
but he's the one I went with.Office is run
well.It was a very well run program they
have you go to class and tell you every
thing youll ever need to know.Lots of test are done and they totaly get you ready. If I had to rate I would give them a 10 very good.
The only thing is that you never see him
after surgery.other doctors take over but I
understand he's a buzy guy.The office is packed all the time.
Dr. Marema's bedside manner and compassion are extraordinary. He is a post op patient himself and it was obvious from the first meeting with him that his empathy is as wonderful as his surgical skills. At the time of my surgery, the office and staff was much smaller and seemed a little more personal that it is now due to the increased patient volume. While it can now be difficult getting through to someone within the office due to the high patient volume, they are always helpful and make every attempt to address your concerns.
