My first impression for Dr Mary was wonderful. Both my husband and I were impressed with her attention to detail and letting us know all the risks involved with the surgery. She did emphasize exercise and having a program that is cardiovascular. She said a lot of her patients that yoga is exercise and in her book unless you sweat it's not doing enough. She was kind enough to say I would be a candidate for Lap if wanted to see another doctor but I selected her. Dr. Mary and her staff were very kind and confirmed my decision for selecting her as my surgeon.

From the time Dr. Mary Murphy walked into the exam room I felt totally at ease. She has a way about her that makes you feel like you have known her for years. She took the time to explain, in detail, my surgery. I feel that I have THE BEST Dr. My confidence in her is a 10+. She emphasizes the fact that this surgery is a tool not a cure and that the sucess of this surgery is in my hands. After my exam was over, I had one more question, Dr. Mary took time out, between other patients, to see me again and add more notes to my file. She is terrific, as is the support from everyone else at Pacific Baristric.(hi Laverne) UPDATE: I am now 11 days post-op and doing great. Dr. Mary Murphy is still a 10+ in my eyes. She is extremely concerned that her patients all do well. From my first pre-op appt. to my one week post-op appt. she was very clear about what you need to do to be sucessful. That dedication, I believe, leads to positive results. I can't say enough good things about her. My only complaint was having to wait until 8pm for discharge from the hospital. Dr. Mary had been in surgery most of the day and was very apoligetic about the delay.

Dr. Mary Murphy will be my surgeon and I couldn't be happier. When I met with her at consultation she was friendly, information and caring. She didn't make me feel uncomfortable or afraid of the decision I made. I am so glad she will be my physician.

She was fabulous. She is warm, affectionate, compassionate and competent. She explained the complications and risks and drew the surgery process on paper for me to see as well as taking a marker and drawing the surgery incision on my stomach so I would know what kind of scar I was looking at. It was hard to stare at it in the mirror when I got home, but I actually had this time to "get over it" before the surgery and not have to worry about it after.
Mary assured me that I was in good hands that that she would take good care of me, and I believed her from the start. She is not snooty or egotistical like so many surgeons can be. I felt like she was a family friend who was really looking out for me. My family had the same impression when they met her the day of my sugery. The stated how kind and thoughtful she was. My mother who had the surgery stated that her doctor was not nearly as kind as Mary Murphy.
She did a wonderful job on my sugery which only took one hour and 45 minutes and gave me a clean, nice incision with no outside sutures. I have not a single bit of regret on choosing Mary Murphy. She knows what she is doing and does it in a caring and compassionate way. Bedside manner has not been lost after all.........at least with Dr. Mary.

DR. MARY MURPHY IS VERY KIND AND WILL PATIENTLY ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS. SHE REALLY ELIMINATED ANY RESIDUAL FEARS I HAD ABOUT THE PROCEDURE AND THE RISKS. SO FAR, I DON'T HAVE ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE WITH DR. MURPHY.

PACIFIC BARIATRICS GIVES THE PATIENT A WEALTH OF PRE-OP AND POST OP INFORMATION. IT MAKES IT MUCH EASIER TO BE PREPARED

THE STAFF WAS POLITE AND ATTENTIVE.

I HAVEN'T HAD TO DEAL WITH AFTERCARE YET, BUT I PERSONALLY KNOW SOMEONE WHO WENT THROUGH THE PROCEDURE AT PACIFIC BARIATRICS.
HE TELLS ME THAT THEY WORK IN TANDEM WITH KAISER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. THAT MEANS YOU GET A GREAT DEAL OF SUPPORT.

I THINK PHYSICIANS NEED TO HAVE BOTH SURGICAL COMPETENCE AND A GREAT BEDSIDE MANNER.

My first impression of Dr. Mary Murphy was very good. She was straight forward, willing to discuss any concerns I had, and she gave very explicit instructions for pre-op preparation. Over time your impression just gets better. Her office staff is great; very polite and they all seem to be doing the very best they can for you. I can't say there was anything to dislike about her or the entire staff. If there is anything anyone would need to know about her I believe it would be that you can trust she will do her very best to take good care of you. She emphasizes after care with your primary care physician and has a very structured post-op regiment as well. Dr. Murphy adresses the risks of the surgery right up front, defines the probability they will and/or won't occur, and explains what in her pre-op and post-op regiments will significantly reduce these risks for you. Overall I would say she is a wonderful choice for this proceedure, probably one of the very best. Her surgical competence and bedside manor are equally impressive!

My first thoughts in my head were why is she coming in late with a cup of coffee? But my impression changed immediatley when she introduced herself so nice and personably and made an appology for being late. I only half joked with her on drinking coffee when she makes us quit before surgery. She really explained things well and put me at ease. I got to ask questions directly about me and my medical history and she was great with explaining everything in detail. She has a very structured PRE-surgery program, which I haven't heard of too many others being as thourough about the pre part of it. Like you must quit smoking (I haven't smoked in years) Starting a walking program, add protein and vitamins, drink alot more water, don't Gain any more weight( part of me once to go out and try a creme brule just cause I never had one and this could be the last time for that). The strong emphasis on the pre surgery really made me feel better about proceeding to have this surgery. It was one of the reasons I chose this medical group. They didn't sugar coat anything and wouldn't just operate on anyone. They want you to be succesful and seem to offer alot of inspiration on getting there. She really didn't mention a wholelot of aftercare. I will be sure to ask more questions on that topic next time I see her. So far she's an A-. I'll update when I see her again and when I have my surgery which should be in May.

I heard so many great things about her but so far after meeting her only once.....Nothing to brag about! Hopefully I will after surgery.

Update: Feb 23,2003
It has been 5 weeks today since my consult date with Dr. Mary Murphy and still have no surgery date. The office staff says that they have to pry files from her and that she is slow with her paperwork. Friends of mine who also had a consult with her got their dates after only 2 weeks but not me. Still waiting.

I L-O-V-E Dr. Mary. Just as everyone else states, she takes her time with you. Answering every question. She had to take a phone call from a fellow Dr. during my consult, but still made me feel at ease the entire time she was on the phone...I don't know how she did it.

Dr. Murphy was kind and responsive to my needs. She answered all of my questions, and I had many. She was slow at doing her dictation, which slowed my case, but I understand the amount of work I am sure she has. This was probably part of my impatience also, since I have been going through this process over 1 yr. Her office staff was ok. Dr. Murphy put something in words for me, she said, "you will always have a fat person trying to get out in you." Most people say they have a skinny person waiting to get out, but she did it to explain how if I do not diet, excercise, drink water, and eat my protien, I will have done all of this for nothing. Dr. Murphy explained all of the risks in detail, and how they avoid them if possible. I would rate her a 9 3/4, out of ten. Dr. Murphys'competence, bedside manner, and caring demeanor are great.
