Both Dr. Robert Davis & Dr. Garth Davis were GREAT!!!!. Dr. G. Davis presentation was very informative. After the presentation I met with Dr. R. Davis, he was extremly friendly, and answered all of my questions/concerns. He really made me feel confortable about proceeding with the surgery, and the office staff is extremly helpful and friendly. I would recommend anyone in the Houston area who are inquiring about Bariatric surgeons to contact their office.
I had both Dr. Robert and Dr. Garth as my surgeons. I knew Dr. Robert better because up until the day of my surgery he was the only doctor I had seen. I have mainly seen Dr. Garth after the surgery for follow up exams. My impression of them has only improved over time. They are both very caring individuals. I can only imagine the amount of time they put in on a weekly basis. Dr. Robert and Dr. Garth both have wonderful senses of humor. I can only say that the more you get to know them, the more you grow to like them and realize that they know their stuff. Dr. Garth is going to be the head of the Bariatric Division that they are building at Methodist. To all who read this post, you could not be in better hands. You read about centers that are popping up and how they don't really know what they are doing. That is not the case here. They do know what they are doing. Insurance companies are not approving some people now because of who they select as their doctors for this reason specifically. You should not have this problem here.
I have to say that you will get out of the visit what you put in. If you go to the consultation thinking that you don't want to be there, just want the information. Don't waste their time or yours. They are there to help you and it shows from the start. Dr. Garth considers this his life work. When he speaks about patients and how he has helped them, his whole face lights up. I know he goes above and beyond. Both doctors receive an 11 out of 10 in my book. God led me to them, and trust me, it was not easy. You don't want to trust just anyone with this surgery. We are talking life and death. If I had to choose all over again, I would choose the exact same doctors.
Just remember, you still have to do everything they say. It is imperative. They discuss in length the risks of surgery and the benefits. You can ask as many questions as you want. Go prepared with a list. They are there to answer them. This is not something to take likely. Not to scare anyone, but things do happen. That is why you need to be in competent hands. I could not recommend more competent hands than Dr. Robert and Dr. Garth Davis. And they are funny and make you laugh. Good luck in whatever and whoever you decide. Just be informed.
My comments have been all positive to this point. I have been blessed. I did not have any complications. I have done exceptionally well. These words stated above are based solely on my experience and my experience alone. Each person has to go through this journey and make their own decision. It is not a decision to make lightly.

I had my first appt. with Dr. Robert Davis about a month ago. His son, Dr. Garth Davis did a slide presentation during that appt. for everyone in the waiting room. It was VERY informative....the only problem was that we wasn't told about the length of that meeting. We ended up being there over 3 hrs. Luckily my husband and I had taken the whole afternoon off work.
Both Dr. Davis's are very personable. Their office staff is very helpful and on top of things. When my reg. doctor had sent the wrong paper work from their office, several times, Dr. Davis's staff made several calls and got the problem fixed for me.
I'm in the waiting stage for my insurance's approval now 11/04...but am looking forward to the surgery because I feel Dr. Davis is very competent to lead me through this surgery successfully.
What was your first impression of him/her?
Awesome!
How did your impression change over time?
Just enjoyed the visit more as time went on.
How would you describe his/her office staff?
Very helpful and friendly.
What did you like least about him/her?
n/a
What should future patients know about him/her? Plan for a long first meeting/consult.
How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?
A LOT! But considering the surgery they certainly should.
Does he/she have a structured aftercare program? YEP!
How did he/she address the risks of surgery?
Yes, even risks I havent read of elsewhere.
How would you rate him/her overall?
Which is better, surgical competence, bedside
manner, or both great?
I was impressed with him from day one. Dr. Davis is very personable and detailed oriented.
As time went on I my impression grew stronger and I felt very secure that my 10 year search for the best Doctor had finally came to an end.
Dr. Davis office is very bariatric patient friendly and everyone and the staff is nice and accommodating.
What I like least about him is because is so highly recommended through out the Houston area, there will always be a wait.
Patients should know that Dr. Davis is very committed to his bariatric patients. He is so committed that he now is a Farther/Son team with his son Garth Davis (who is now Director of Bariatric at Methodist), and they are in the process of completing a state of the art Bariatric Facility ward in The Methodist Hospital basement. They also have a person on staff who works with and handles all insurance claims. She generally knows which insurance companies is going to be more diffcult and will tell you all of the documentaion you will need to make your first attempt more successful.
Dr. Davis is so committed to aftercare that he gives you this booklet that walks you through your pre-op and post-op and you must signed a waver sheet saying that you have read and will follow the post-op after care program
The program is very structured and he have support meeting once a month free of charge on the many issues that post-op patients will face.
Dr. Davis was very candid about the risk of the surgery, but at the same time he let's you know that there are some patients who are going to be at a higher risk than others.
On a scale of 1-10 I would rate him a 10.
Although he has good bedside manner his surgical competence is definitely better.
Drs. Robert and Garth Davis are very impressive. They gave an excellent power point presentation of general facts about obesity and the details of the surgery they perform. They are both extremely personable and did a lot to put me at ease about the surgery.
They do have a very structured after care program with a support group. The risks of surgery were addressed, but these doctors have an excellent track record in comparison to national standards.
Most surgeons lack good bedside manner. These doctors seem to have surgical skill while maintaining excellent bedside manner.
They seem very genuine and concerned with the futures of their patients.
Dr. Davis seems genuinely interested and concerned about the consequences--both physical and emotional--of obesity. He was very knowledgeable and reassuring. I was impressed that he did not judge anyone--he was just there to help. Office staff seemed very capable and efficient. I haven't submitted any paperwork yet--I'm still trying to get it altogether--so only time will tell regarding their ability to cut theought the insurance red tape. Dr. Davis practices with his son Garth. They have just initated a major support group for aftercare--this seems like a good idea. I'm not planning to have surgery until December--from all that I've learned from this website, it seems like a good idea to plan for surgery several months in advance--it seems to take that long from the first visit with a surgeon to the actual surgery. The more I learn, the more excited I become. I never thought I'd see the scale near 150 lbs again--now the possibility seems very real!
I have to say that I have been nothing but impressed with Dr Davis and his staff! They have been very helpful every step of the way. Dr. Davis goes above and beyond just what the insurance requires. My insurance (Coresource) is VERY GOOD!!! My insurance only required a letter from a psychologist, a letter from a dietician, a letter from the WL surgeon and weight/health history. That was all I submitted to Dr. Davis office. I called the following week to get a status of the approval process. They told me that they were missing my letter from my family doctor, I told them that my insurance did not require it - they told me that THEY required it. I must admit that I was a little annoyed that it held up the approval process but after I thought about it, I was certain that I chose the right surgeon!
I met Dr Davis at one of his information sessions. I think that is a great way to meet your patients for the first time. He was able to go over the most frequently asked info. Things like types of procedures, risks, comorbities, post op diet, etc. Then he called each patient in one at a time. I was the last there so I had to wait the longest. It still was only less than an hour of waiting. I came prepared and didn't have many questions. He answered the ones that I had very well. Dr Davis' staff is wonderful- though busy. Dr. Davis' son works in the office with him so I am sure they see alot of patients. They have been very patient with me even though I am impatient!! The Davis' have a support group that meets now. They want to expand into more of a comprehensive weight loss center with Psych., dietitian etc. at their office. While I think that surgical competence is the most important of Dr. Davis'--he also has a great bedside manner. At this point I don't have anything negative to say about him or his staff.
