My first impression of Dr O Brien was very competent. Not very warm and fuzzy. This remained my opinion throughout. The staff really made up for it though, they were great. I wished he wasnt quite so aloof. I had a list of questions and answered them carefully. Took the surgery very serious and encourged me to do the same. The surgery went exactly like he said. The anestheliologist was excellent. My main concern was being sick after surgery, but I had no trouble. I would say his surgical competence far exceeds his bedside manner.
My first impression was that he is a get down to it kind of surgeon.rnrnMy impression stayed about the same and i learned he doenst have alot of time to answer questions and if u wanna know something u better ask.rnrnThe office staff ar every friendly and helpful and knoweldgeable.rnrnI diidnt like the bed side manner and the no time.rnrnim not so sure its him the emphasized afetrcare but his nurses and staff emphasized it greatly.rnrnNo structured aftercare programthat i found except coming for fills and seeing teh dietician 2 times.rnrnThe risks were addressed very vagely.rnrnI think he was agreat surgeon and didna great job and answered alot of my questions.rnrnI belive both knoweldge and bedside manner are of up most importance.
my first impression of dr. obrien was he dosent say much but he knows what he is doing. He just made me feel very welcome and safe in his hands. The office staff was very kind and answerd all of my questions that i had no matter how may it was. The doc really worked with me and understood where i was comming from on my downfalls at work. They also have a support meeting ervery month and that has really been really helpful because others that have had the surgery are they and they help you and answer any and all of your questions.
I was fortunate that the BEST surgeon in the area also happened to be my soccer coach as a kid. Dr. O'Brien has performed hundreds of bariatric surgeries and is a pioneer in this field in our area. He is very professional and to the point. His nurses have been excellent and very informative. I would definitely recommend him and the program at Sioux Valley to anyone in the area.

First impression was that he is very good and very busy, he does primarily all Lap Bands these days. He told me I was a good candidate for Lap Band, that he wouldn't consider me for RNY, as I would lose too much. His office was very helpful, even before my first consultation and also got my letter off to my insurance ASAP, which resulted in approval.I also went thru an internet program called My Emmi, which went thru the surgery in detail, along with the risks. He has a very structured aftercare program. Dr. O'Brien doesn't have the coziest bedside manner but I believe him to be the best surgeon for Lap Band in the area.
I chose Dr. O'Brien because a friend had him do her lap band and was very pleased. Once I had his name, I checked this forum to read what others had to say about him...all good! I met with him on Nov. 7 and was very impressed. Not a chatty person, but that's OK...I am much more interested in his surgical abilities than visiting. His demeanor gives the impression of competence and confidence, which helps me feel confident. Our visit was short but he answered my few questions thoroughly and discussed the risks and emphasized the fact that aftercare program participation is crucial. I feel very comfortable knowing that he will perform the surgery.
