I had my surgery 10 months ago and I couldn't be happier with Dr. Hares and his staff. I recently had what I thought was a complication from surgery, but turned out to be a kidney stone. I wouldn't go to anyone other than Dr. Hares as he cares more about his patients than any other doctor I have met.
I chose Dr. Hares initially because he was the only local surgeon that would take my insurance. I got the information from the office in the mail and I read it all several times. I had been researching the surgery for 3 years and had tried with another doctor for about 18 months, but my prior insurance denied me. I met with Jackie and she was wonderful. She answered all my questions and made me feel that she really cared about the patients as individuals. I immediately started researching Dr. Hares on the internet and I couldn't find anything bad about him. Everyone spoke so highly of him that I couldn't believe it was true. When I met with him, I knew it was true. He explained everything in a way that anyone could understand and he never made me feel like he was rushing (like some other doctors do). He really cares about his patients. I had my surgery on July 19. My family was really impressed with the way he spoke to them after my surgery and how much time he spent explaining everything to them. When I saw him in the hospital for the post-op days, he was great. He really made me feel important and he took time to listen to my concerns. He was really the best doctor I have ever had. I am so happy my insurance forced my decision, because it was the best decision I could have made. Dr. Hares really strikes me as someone who really knows his stuff and is always looking for better ways to help his patients. He really cares.
The nursing staff in the hospital was wonderful. They always seemed to be running but always had time to help me. I was pretty wimpy after surgery and the nursing staff spent a lot of time helping me in and out of bed and walking. They were always there to give me added pain medicine if I needed it. There was a patient in a nearby room that was a very demanding and loud patient. The staff always managed to take care of everyone with dignity and still managed the difficult patient. One evening the difficult patient was extremely loud so one of the nurses gave her something to help her sleep. That allowed everyone in the area to rest better and I was so thankful to have a peaceful night. After listening to the staff deal with this patient, I knew they must have an extraordinary amount of patience and caring. Never did they make me feel bad about my weight nor did anyone make me feel bad about having obesity surgery. I was worried that the staff would look down on me for not being able to lose weight any other way, but I was wrong. They were very compationate and they all made me feel that surgery with Dr. Hares was the best decision I could have made for my health.
my first impression of Jackie and dr Hares is that they were very professional. they took the time to answer all my questions even when I asked them a hundred times. The office staff were excellent. I cant say enough about the whole team. They emphasize after care almost as much as they do the surgery itself. They have a very structured after care program called the bariatric bunch. all of the risks of the surgery were explained to me and then reexplained to my husband.
What impressed me first about Dr. Hares, was that he called me on a Saturday morning to answer questions I had emailed him the night before, I thought his office would reply, but not that quick! When I met Dr. Hares, I was totally impressed, he takes his time explaining the surgery, answering any questions.
Jackie, is a wonderful person, I met with Jackie before seeing Dr. Hares, after throughly explaining the surgical procedure, I knew the surgery was for me, she is so caring and understanding, I didn't feel like I was just a number, that you are important to them. Jackie stressed the aftercare program, and how important it is, and that I will have all the support I may need.
I have talked with prospective patients, and post surgical patients, there was only praise for Jackie, Carol, and Dr. Hares.
My surgery is scheduled for 01/17/02, I will be having the Duodenal Switch procedure.
Yesterday was my first appt at Bloomfield Bariatrics. First of all, from the time I talked to Carol the receptionist on the phone I knew I had found the right place for me. She was so sweet and caring and you could tell it was from the heart. Next Jackie Smiertka, My God I can not say enough about her. Jackie is so knowledgable and informative. The warmth and genuine concern and caring is just what people need when making such a life changing decision such as this. I went to one other center and was so put off with the sterile business approach that they had, and talked to another and they couldn't be bothered until you got insurance approval first. Immediatly I knew the Bloomfield Bariatrics was were I wanted to be . I'm so excited, thankful and optomistic about my decision and I haven't even met Dr. Hares yet. But everyone says he's wonderful too. I'm so so happy right now it's unbelievable. Thank-you God!
9-26-01 I had the surgery (Open D/S with G/R) done on the 19th by Dr. Hares. He was fantastic, even meeting me at the E.R. a couple days after my release due to dehydration. His staff and the staff at the hospital were all wonderful, being very upbeat and adept.

8-9-01 I met with Dr. Hares today. My first impression of him is a really good one. He's very dedicated and into helping his patients. He's honest, direct and personable.

5-9-01 It appears now that Dr. Hares will be doing my surgery. Dr. Lutrzykowski has not made himself available to me at all. His staff wouldn't even let me schedule an appointment, much less speak to him on the phone. That did not make me comfortable at all. I've already met with Jackie(RN) at a group consultation. She was very helpful and attentive to all of our needs and concerns. From what I've read, Dr. Hares is honestly concerned for his patients and potential patients and a wonderful surgeon.

3-26-01 Dr. Obeid, at the Hurlery Center for Comprehensive Weight Loss, has a policy to not offer surgery to those with DID/MPD, even if it is well controlled. I was denied the right to a healthy life today by his firm.

2-14-01 (After initial consult) ~ Dr. Obeid is friendly and caring. He really seems dedicated. He performs the Roux-en Y. He's a trauma specialist, also, which is comforting.
I found Dr. Hares to be a very gentle, soft-spoken man. He seems to genuinely care about his patients, and their well-being. He is very compassionate. I experienced an episode in the hospital, that was due to not getting one of my previous meds(an oversight), and became very restless and aggitated. He responded with the utmost care and compassion for me, and made sure that I was well on my way to being back to normal before he left the hospital.
His office and staff are very lovely people. Carol is very helpful and Jackie truely loves all the patients. They definitely stress the importance of follow-up care, vit's and mineral supplements, and the 2yr group support mtgs. Since I am from BC., Canada, I was really impressed with the fact that they bent over backwards to accomadate me, by scheduling my surgery in only 1 wks time.
The risks of the surgery were fully explained to me, and all my questions were answered fully. I knew going into surgery that I was in good hands. Thank you Jackie,RN and Dr. Hares and Carol for all you've done!!!! And a special thanks to Dr. Hares for my beautiful scar--it's beautiful to me because it means a new life!
I am highly impressed with Dr. Hares. He is very patient, informative and caring towards everybody. I like the fact he is very thorough and encourages questions during the consultation. Very dedicated. The office environment is very calm and relax. The staff are very comfortable to be around with and very easy to talk with: Jackie (RN) and Carol (Office)...have both been GREAT! Very patient, understanding and always available to answer questions and for additional support every step of the way. They all take GREAT interest and care in everyone's well being..both physcially and emotionally. I managed to meet many nice people from the office to the meetings and even through the website. You get alot of encouragement and support that is unbelievable. I am trully amazed and thankful for finding them and going forth in this life changing journey with them.
The staff at Dr.Hares office are the greatest. The office is so nicely decorated that it gives you a warm and comfortably feeling. Not like most doctors offices. I had my surgery almost one year ago today. I can't say enough good things about it. I have lost 95 lbs.and I am only 20 lbs from my goal weight. I feel so healthy now, with so much more energy. I think the thing that stands out the most about Dr. Hares and Jackie are their availability. After the surgery I had some questions and I paged Jackie. She called me right back, and she was out of the state at the time. I was impressed at that point, but then Dr. Hares called me to see how I was feeling. I was shocked. What doctor ever does that. Then I was sure that I had chosen the right doctor. Now that it has been a year, I still feel that I made the right choice to have the surgery. If you are thinking about having this surgery, it's not easy, but it's worth it. p.s. Don't even think about having it done by any other doctor than Dr. Hares.
