I think everything good I've read about Dr. Leitman is true. He's seems extrememely competent and pleasant. I feel very comfortable with him as my surgeon. I did extensive research before selecting him. The initial consultation could not have been better.
Contrary to what I've read about his office staff, though, I'll just say the jury is still out.
Nice ,confident he definately knows what he's doing office staff is very pleasant there was nothing about him i didn't like he takes every thing he does very seriously emphasised on the risk it can be and explained everything very thoroughly.
The office is very nice and the staff is great I go to the Lenox Hill Community group at 95st.and the staff is sweet and helpful.
There was nothing that I didn't like about Dr. Leitman he's so great.
He takes everything he does very seriously and listens to everything you need to say other than that he really cares about his patients.
Well if theres a problem you just call in and usually he see's you that same day or tell's you to come in but he's very on top of things.
well he did tell me all I neede to do and sent me to a nutritionist and if I had any questions always called me back and answered them.
He was very thourough on explaining the risks of the surgery
Well personally I feel that Dr. Leitman is my angel he is great and I thank God for him out of a 10 I give him a 20.
He made me feel comfortable before surgery and spoke to me and knew how I felt and was nice to assure me I would be fine other than that saw me a couple of times after surgery he's great minder he also operated on me for Hernia removal 4 months after and I still say he's my angel.
One of my close friends was thinking of having surgery with Dr. Leitman so I attended his support group @ Lenox Hill Hospital in March of 2002. The group was run that night by his partner, Dr. Roslin. Soon after, I made an appointment with him myself. From the first moment I entered the office, I felt at ease. His assistant, Joan is quite helpful and competent. He was very direct, to the point and informative. I had done A LOT of research prior to coming, so, I knew what to ask and what was important. I was initially seeking a second opinion and made an appointment with Dr. Roslin as well (since he does the procedure lap) and also Dr. Garber in Great Neck. I ended up opting for the open RNY and cancelled the other two appointments. Since I felt at ease with Dr. Leitman and I didn't want to do the surgery lap, I chose Dr. Leitman. Plus, I live in Manhattan and Lenox Hill Hospital is both convenient and has a great reputation.
<p align="left">I had my consult with Dr. Leitman today. All I can say it was worth the wait. He was wonderful and he put my mom and I at ease. He explained all the risks and things that might occur. During our meeting, my mom told him that she was a nurse and we found out that he used to be at the hospital that my mom works at and he knows most of the drs that I use. When we were talking he made me feel like I was important and not just a number. He answered all the questions that I had and joked that I had done so much research, that I could probably perform the surgery. Joan, like everyone says is amazing. She told me everything that I would need to do to get insurance approval. He strongly emphasizes aftercare and he does have a structured aftercare program. At this point I would give Dr. Leitman a 10 and I feel that his surgical competence and bedside manner are great. If you live in the Tri-State area, I highly recommend using him as your surgeon.
I had my consultation with Dr. Leitman on April 14th. I had heard many very nice things about him and Joan. I was nervous when I got to the office, but Joan was so nice and when I saw Dr. Letiman he made me feel at ease. He was very understanding and empathetic. He even didn't mind the questions that my mom and husband asked him. Dr. Leitman made me feel very comfortable talking to him. I would recommend him to everyone!!
2.26.04 Met Dr. Leitman for the firt time 2 days ago when I went for my first consultation. He was very gentle in manner. He very thoroughly explained the procedure he does, the Roen Y Gastric Bypass. He explained about the window of weight loss opportunity which is between the 3rd and 14th month, the first two being mostly water weight loss. He explained the risks, which I had already finished obsessing about (task # 4). I probably didn't have as many questions as some because I am a voracious reader and have been reading everything I can get my hands on from Carnie Wilson's two books, to "A Complete Guide To Obesity Surgery" by, Bryan G. Woodward, MPH, LCEP. I've been on this site for 4 months, reading, reading and READING. Also, I cheated and escorted a friend to her first appointment which was two weeks before mine with another surgeon, acquiring much information during her office consult which they very kindly let me sit through with her.
Dr. Leitman is the best in my book. He's warm, friendly and patient. He spendt time with me and answered all of my questions. I never felt rushed.
Besides his excellent credentials as a surgeon, his office staff is one of his best selling points. His assistant, Joan, is friendly and professional, as is his entire staff. They (particularly Joan) always return calls and follows through on paperwork and any other problem/situation/question you may have.
Before finding Dr. Leitman, I dealt with other surgeons' office staff and they were difficult and some didn't even return my calls, so I took that as a sign to keep looking. After all, this is serious surgery and in picking a surgeon, it was very important to me that he and his staff were available, especially post-operatively. I've emailed questions to him and have gotten prompt responses. I can't think of anything negative to say about him or his staff. Maybe the elevator up to his office is a bit slow.
Dr. Leitman conducts a support group each month and encourages his patients to exercise.
In my opinion, he was very thorough in describing the surgery and discussing the risks. I did tons of research beforehand, so I already understood most of the risks.
Personally, I would give Dr. Leitman a gold star. In my eyes, he's the best.
Surgical competence is important, of course. But a good bedside manner is just as important because it helps alleviate fears and builds trust which can help a patient's recovery.

I met with Dr. Leitman on January 24, 2003, and I hate to sound like a broken record, but he truly is wonderful. Yes, it's true! I had to wait for about an hour, but he was worth the wait. During that time Joan, gave me the information packet, and I filled out some forms. I was extremely nervous, but once I met him, he began explaining things to me and answering my, endless, questions...I wanted to cry I was so relieved. I knew, then, that I would be in very good hands. He was extremely thorough, and explained the surgery from beginning to end(open- RNY.) He took his time, and treated me with dignity, patience and kindness. I rate him a 10+ I left his office that afternoon with my surgery date June 26th :)
