Adolfo Fernandez Bariatric Surgeon M.D.

Dr. Fernandez is very friendly and approachable. His staff is top notch and unequalled. The RN, Susan Butler, addresses each and every concern and seems be on the job 24/7. She will communicate via phone or email post op and do all possible to assist. Dr. Fernandez requires that all patients undergo a pyschological evaluation with Dr. Jeff Smith as well as several nutrional consults with Mary Martha Smoak. With this dedicated team of professionals, you never feel alone in this quest. They also have a support group that meets monthly and all 4 of them (2 Drs, RN & Nutritionist) attend the meetings. They do, of course, evaluate prospective patients and assess if the WLS is appropriate. They also are very upfront about the risks, however they have had no deaths since beginning the procedure at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. I did have some difficulty post op and the entire staff was so supportive and willing to offer their time and expertise to assist. They also went the extra mile to make sure my insurance company extended my leave of absence so that I would continue to be paid, even though the insurance company originally wanted me to return to work within 4 weeks after surgery. I would rate this group at the very top of the scale or over the top! At each and every point in my journey, they have all offered their support and time - never hestiating to encourage me and do all possible to get my insurance approval, secure my leave of absence and make my surgery a success. I was approved for this surgery in 2000 and did not proceed due to the illness of my mother. I am ever so grateful that I waited... for that gave me the time to find Dr. Fernandez, Susan Butler, Dr. Smith and Mary Martha Smoak - the most fabulous team of weight loss professionals ever!

01/06/05 I met Dr. Fuzz and Susan today. They were both GREAT!! Dr. Fuzz is very young, but very caring and personable. He talked about everything and made sure I didn't have any questions. He seems like to me, top notch!! If I had to recommed a surgeon it would definitely be Dr. Fuzz!!! He gets a 10 in my book!!!

Dr. Fernandez was very nice and seemed concerned with me personally.

The educational program that you complete prior to seeing the surgeon is very thorough and describes the procedure, its limitations,
any side effects, and potential risks.

My first impression of him was that he was young but very knowledgeable about his chosen field. He has an excellent bedside manner. He strongly emphasizes aftercare and exercise. He was very open and honest about the risks of this surgery. I was confident enough of his skill to let it be broadcast live on the internet.

After having met Dr. "Fuzz" (as he's more affectionately known) first at his monthly support group meeting, I must say that I was very impressed. Honestly, my first thought was "Oh my, he's YOUNG" (32) but then so am I and I've never let that stop ME....so..why can't he be great??? :) Then I was able to have a consult with him on August 26th. I was even more impressed with him on the personal level. I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that he is the best Dr. for me, for this.

I can not praise Dr. Fernandez, ("Dr. Fuzz" as he is known) and his staff enough. From the day I first called his office to my last follow-up visit, I received the best care I have ever had by any healthcare professional. My treatment at Wake Forest University Medical Center was top notch. I was very well informed about the risks and proceedures before the surgery. They were very diligent in obtaining insurance approval. The psychological and nutritional assistance is great.I really have no negative feelings about the care I received from Dr. Fernandez and his staff.

My first impressions of Dr. "Fuzz" Fernandez were 1. Wow!!! He's cute! 2. He sure is YOUNG!!! 3. He is very nice. 4. He sure seems to know what he is talking about!!!. I have come to realize that he is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated. He is always willing to answer any questions and doesn't seem to hedge on any subject. He is very reassuring but also wants you to be aware of facts and any possible risks/dangers. These risks were spoken verbably and in writing. I've not found anything that I don't like about him.
The staff is so friendly and dedicated and energetic that it's almost hard to believe. The group is certainly not like I have encountered at most doctor's offices. The monthly support group meetings are excellent with the entire staff attending.
I am still in pre-op stage and at this point I highly recommend Dr Fernandez's program.

I truly believe that Dr. Fernandez is the best in this field in our area. He is also the only one in this area performing the rny laproscopicly. He is very young, but hey, when your young you've got the stamina to stay on your feet for hours at a time without growing weary! His bedside manner is A+, and I truly felt like he cared about me as a patient and a person. He made sure I felt ok about the whole process, and answered all of my questions before I even had to ask them! I suggest him to all I know seeking the gastric bypass surgery.

I was recommended to DR Fernando by my primary physician DR Robyn Sanders. She advised me that he was one of the best in our local area. Hearing so much about DR Fernando and about the many successful Bypass surgeries he performed, I assumed he was an older gentleman. I first met DR Fernando on April 29th. When he came in the room, I didn't realize it was him because one again, I expected and older gentleman. We sat and had a one on one consultation. During our initial consultation, he went over what to expect from the surgery, during the surgery, and after the surgery. DR Fernando also went over all of the risk associated with the surgery. He was everything that I was told he would be nothing more nothing less. He's the type of doctor that gives 150% devotion to all of his patients. His concern is the well being of all of his patients.

My first and only impression of him at this time is that he is young, but knows what he is doing.
