Dr, O'Connell is wonderful. He has always helped feel good about the surgery with no regrets. I feel I have lost touch with my monthly meeting cause I just do not attend them. His staff is great I wish they kept in touch with you more after surgery though, You kinda fade away if you do not go to the meetings and post op appointments which I have not gone to all of mine.
I wish they were more personal post op.
I really believe in his methods and beliefs about the surgery cause I have not had one complication.
After care is good if you pursue it.
I was well informed of all the risks.

I rate him excellent over all.

Everything was great.

Dr O'Connell was wonderful, very upfront and honest. His staff is knowledgable and friendly. He has a support meeting every month for interested and post op patients. His nurse, dietian, and social worker are present to answer questions and deal with real issues. They address lots of questions and give statistics.
I rate them an A+

My first impression of Dr. O'Connell was that he was a busy man and very professional. If you need mushy gushy stuff from your intended surgeon, perhaps you may not be happy. He was attentive to all my questions and took the time to answer all. He certainly was honest because I already knew most of the answers to the questions I asked him about his stats, his experience and his experience level. His staff are wonderful and busy. I had a time span of six weeks from first consult with Dr O'Connell to surgery (5/2/200). I did followup with every detail of the process and incurred a reputation with him, his staff and my insurance company about followup. That bothered me not one whit! My insurance company had a rep with his office for denying patients 55 and older. I was approved without appeal. I worked hard on the medical history and gave great detail and the Dr. included it with his letter of necessity. Dr. O'Connell's aftercare program is there and the structure is well organized. I had Open RNY Proximal on 5/2/2000 and came home (three hours away) on 5/5/2000 and have not taken pain medication since leaving the hospital. I am essentially pain free at two weeks and feeling stronger each day. The hospital staff at Pendleton was wonderful as well as Dr. O'Connell's staff.

My first impression of Doctor O'Connell, was that he really cares about the plight of his overweight patients, in particular me. He is very personable and I trust him completely. He really emphasizes going to the support group before and after the surgery, which he attends to answer your questions, and believe me I had quite a few!

Dr O'Connell impressed me as a very knowledgeable and capable surgeon. He came highly recommended by both my primary doctor and gynecologist. Since I trust them and know that they want what is best for my health, I know that they would never recommend someone that they did not trust. I have had a lot of contact with Dr O'Connell and his staff during the past couple of weeks because AETNA denied my my WLS. I worked with the staff on the appeal and even submitted a 4-page letter to accompany the appeal. Hopefully, we will get approval this time. If not, I still will not give up.

He is warm and caring I have been told, he was very busy the first time I met him. I go in two days for my pre-op and he has promised to answer the million or so questions I have. I am scared to death....his calm manner will help. I have talked to other patients of his and they all assure me that he has the best skills to go with a very pleasant bedside manner. He is very incouraging and really pushes the aftercare groups.

Very thorough and knowledgable. I did a lot of research on surgeons and this procedure and am very happy with Dr. O'Connell and his staff.

My impression of Dr. O'Connell was that he was very concerned and wanted to help me and I felt like I could ask him anything and he would be honest about all of my questions. He treated me as if Iwas a family member and I was very relaxed. My impression never changed only that I felt close to him as the years went on.His office staff has and is always courteous and informative and friendly.
I cannot think of a thing that I dislike about my doctor.Patients should know that he will be honest about this proceedure, as it is only a start and that this is not a cure all, that the way you live will change and that the proceedure only works if you work with the program. He does strongly reccomend aftercare for his patients and his is very well put together. He addressed all of the risks and dangers and nothing would have scared me away from having this done, I mean I was taking a risk every day that I was still gaining the weight, and slowly dying as a result of my obesity. My health has improved, I can walk, dance, play, skip, sit in chairs I wasnt able to sit in before, cros my legs, you name it I can do it now!!
I trust him with my life and he is like my hero , so yes I feel strongly about his surgical competence and his bedside manner. I give him an A+. I am a new person...

I was terrified when I first went to see Dr. O'Connell. I wasn't sure what was going to happen or if I would even qualify for the surgery. Dr. O'Connell put me at ease immediately. From the first he was reassuring and explained everything to me. He actually seemed to care about me and what happened to me ... what had been happening to me as a result of my obesity. As time when by I viewed him more as a father figure and the man who saved my life. It's difficult these days to find a doctor (any doctor) who takes time to know his patients and who is as caring. Dr. O'Connell is truly a jewel in the medical profession. His staff was always friendly and it often seemed like family when I went in for appointments. Even the patients felt a connection to each other. The staff was also caring. Heather in particular seemed to be infatigueable. She came to see me the evening of my surgery and I was very grateful. She has never ceased to have a smile on her face or listen to me with an attitude of concern, encouragement or whatever the situation called for.

What I like least about Dr. O'Connell and staff? I liked least when it was no longer necessary for me to go there on a regular basis. I miss them.

Aftercare, as I mentioned before was incredible. There was plenty to learn and Dr. O'Connell and his staff never left me in the dark about anything. Their aftercare program is very helpful and addressed topics I never thought I would have to address like how I would feel about myself after I lost the weight. It was a joy to be sure but my personality and my life took some turns I never expected. Dr. O'Connell's office helped me through all of it. However it would have been nice to be warned that my life would change dramatically but I'm not sure I would have listened, I was so intent on going ahead with the surgery regardless.

All the risk of surgery were explained to me but I have to admit that no matter what the risk was, the risk of remaining obese far out weighed the risk of having surgery.

Overall I would rate them Triple AAA, an eleven on a scale of one to ten, the best!

As far as surgical competence and bedside manner ... I have trusted Dr. O'Connell more than once with my life and would again. His surgical competence is excellent and is surpassed only by his wonderful bedside manner!
