I met Dr. Kane Jr. at the first required seminar and I found him very intelligent and informed. He was honest and forthright and did not pull any punches. He addressed all the risks of the surgery, and certainly encouraged anyone that can diet and exercies to go that way before considering the surgery. Overall so far: warm, caring, smart.

I had read several comments about him on this web site before my first meeting, so was somewhat prepared for the "rehearsed" nature of the speech. He was very pleasant though not warm and seemed quite encouraging that I shouldn't have trouble getting my insurance to approve. Did not seem rushed and was patient with my questions.
6/28/01 - A friend of my daughter's told me about Dr. Kane who is close to my home and I was frustrated with preparation process with BTI, I went to see him and eventually chose him to do my surgery. He was great, and even better he was in my insurance company's network so the surgery cost me significantly less $$ than BTI would have. Also, the hospital was only 10 minutes from my home instead of 1-1/2 hours with BTI. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kane highly.

I first met Dr Kane at a seminar in January 2001. My first impression was that he is very informed about the whole process that his patients have to go through. It is not an easy come in and I will operate on you.He makes you go through alot of Pre Op testing to make sure that you will have a good recovery. I think that he really cares about his patients and I am glad to have found him.

I just met him and heard great things. As I get to know him and his office and once i've had the surgery I will be glad to answer any questions I can.

Dr. James Kane, Jr. Very knowledgeable, personable, took a lot of time to answer my questions. He gave me all the negatives as well as positives. His staff, nurses all seem to be very nice and helpful. Only presurgery now, but i do know there is an aftercare program with him, dietician and attending support group meetings. He seems to have both the competence and the bedside manner which is great.

Very understanding and never rushed. I was his last evening appointment, yet he still talked to me for an hour (till 11:00 PM). I never attended his seminars because I live in Wisconsin, yet he answered all my questions. His office staff seems to be on the ball, and they return my calls and give me the direction I need. Aftercare is of major importance to him and he is concerned because I don't live in Illinois. However, I'm not far away and his aftercare is on Saturdays and I'm only 2 hours from his office. He did not minimize the risks of the surgery, but he also put me at ease on the open procedure if it needed to be done. He is confident and I've heard nothing but good things about him and his father from others. Overall, I'm very happy with my decision. Let me add that he uses Dr. Hart as the pulmanologist. Not a social kind of guy, but he is VERY detailed and serious about his work. He tested and found things that nobody ever mentioned to me. I am so confindent in my care and it has relieved me of any fears...almost.

Dr. Kane Sr. ( there is a junior too!) is one of my brother in-law's best friends. He is a very kind and knowledgeable man.

He has been doing obesity surgery for over 30 years. He is one of the most experienced people in the world at this kind of surgery.

He is highly sought after, and most of his former patients love him. He is primarily concerned with getting a "good result" not just getting another fat person on the table.

His group is very careful about clearing individuals for surgery. They believe in absolute minimization of the all of the known risk factors. He and his son are well respected in the field and have operated with many other surgeons including the Dr. that performed Carnie Wilson's surgery. They are part of the "Weight for Life" group.

They only do Roux-en-Y surgeries now because, after having done thousands of all of the various obesity surgeries over the years, they have statistically determined that Roux-en-Y is by far the most effective at getting an individual to a healthy body weight and has the lowest complication profile status during the maintainance phase.

Aftercare is lacking however. No-one has put me back on my old medications yet or asked me anything about them. I have had to initiate these issues myself. I'm not sure if I feel that I am really being paid much attention to post surgery outside of any pending emergency. The "Weight for Life" people have all but disappeared. Hmm.....

One of my reservations is that I don't always feel that I'm being heard when we talk. But we'll see as time goes on. I know they have many patients to think about and care for.

Dr. Kane was the most wonderful man. He was helpful and kind. There is nothing that I don't like about him. I would recommend him to anyone. He informed me of risks and possible side effects. He has been helpful since the surgery answering questions. He rates high in both surgical competence and bedside manner.

I think he is a very knowledgeable and caring doctor, he took the time to answer all of my questions and my husbands. I have met with him twice and both times he was very nice and compassionate. His staff seems perfectly confident, and they are in a GREAT network, WEIGHT FOR LIFE! They have aftercare, a dietitian, and a psych all on staff, and they will all check you before surgery, and they also have seminars that explain everything and then they have aftercare meetings plus you can call or see the dietitian with any questions or concerns. My overall impression is, they are TERRIFIC, and I am LUCKY to be in such a GREAT place.

Dr. Kane is a very experienced surgeon. I felt safe with him because he has approx. 30 years experience performing weight loss surgeries. Dr. Kane, Sr.'s son also practices with him. I recommend them both.

The staff is quite friendly and I have absolutely no complaints about them at all.

My aftercare has been great. I'm usually in and out of the office fairly quickly. And each time I called Dr. Kane with a question or concern, he called me back the same day.
