I just met with Dr. Strickland for the first time today and let me just say this: he is (so far) probably the nicest, least condescending doctor I have *ever* been in the room with. He was very friendly and like I said before there was not one iota of condescension in the way that he talked with me. I was *very* comfortable--not at all made to feel ashamed. I have not had surgery yet, so I can't tell you how good he is in terms of actually performing the surgery (even though I heard from many sources that he's great), but I can tell you this: if you are hesitating to look into this surgery because you think the doctor is going to make you feel ashamed--go see Dr. Strickland and worry no more! Two thumbs way up!
He has an excellent bedside manner - very compassionate and kind. It is a good idea to write down any questions you want to be sure and have answers. He gives you a lot of info during the consult so it is hard to get sidetracked and forget. The office staff jostled me around a bit at first - apparently I wasn't talking to the right person (even though I told the lady that answered the phone what I was trying to find out) but Amanda is very kind and professional and returns my calls when I leave messages - usually within the same day. The rest of the staff seems to be on their toes as well and very helpful. Dr. Strickland did emphasize aftercare a lot. Overal he kicks jedi butt. I like him a lot. God bless him for making a difference in so many lives.
My first impression of Dr. Strickland on a one on one basis was that he is a very caring person. I feel that he is very sensitive to the problems of Morbidly Obese Patients and he really enjoys helping his patients. I feel that Dr. Strickland is very knowledgeable and proficient in his field of expertise. He is a very good bariatric and general surgeon also. I would highly recommend Dr. Strickland and Dr. Givens and their program for obesity surgery.
Dr. Strickland was careful to explain the risks that are involved and was quick to address any questions or concerns I might have. I would rate Dr. Strickland a 10 out of 10. I thinks he is a overall great surgeon due to surgical competence and terrific bedside manner.
I know I am in good hands when I choose Dr. Strickland and Dr. Givens to perform my surgery. And Southern Surgicals Staff are fantastic also. A overall great medical practice.
I met with Dr. Strickland on 12/27/02. He was so nice and was very informative. He wanted me to understand the goods and the bads of WLS, and stressed the importance of this being the 'last resort' of losing weight. My mom accompanied me, and they encourage that there.
Dr. Strickland's nurse was very, very nice and helpful also.
So far, I'd rate him 9 on a scale of 1-10, and that only being because I have yet to see how he does in the OR personally! =)
Bedside, patient manner is great! Knowledge is wonderful also, and he encourages interaction with other WL Patients.
2/7/03:
Received my approval today. Dr's Strickland's staff was great at helping me get that!
I know Dr. Strickland due to the fact I work at Lexington Medical Center where he preforms the surgery. I see first hand and have watched him taking care of his patients. He is wonderful. Many times he never leaves the hospital on weekends due to his care and concern for his patient. His is frendly to all patients and staff, and professional. His office staff are wonderful. My insurance approved me after one day. Sent letter on 1/6/03 approved on 1/7/03. Aftercare in highly stressed to patients for long term weight loss. Dr. Strickland was informative about risk and complications. He is a 10 so far. Only time will tell what my future holds after surgery.
Dr Strickland Is the best surgeon in the state of SC. He is kind and caring and never sugarcoats anything just tells the truth about everything. I known him for at least 8 years he did some other surgery on me so I have known him along time. Amanda is terrific and sweet and is very smart and knows her stuff. When you go to the office you do have to wait a long long time I think they do over book at times that is my only complaint with the office and that it is so far away, you know when you morbidly obese and have bad arthritis in knees and ankles it makes it hard to get to the office it is such a long walk. They need to move the bariatric portion down to the 2nd floor. The doctors and the staff have all answered all questions and have gone over everything. the only thing is the fellow that schedules the surgeries and get the preop info to the hospital is slow he had 3 months to get all tha set up and all he did was set the appt and when I got there he had not sent the orders and I even asked if I needed to take them but I was told they were there so in that respect he needs to get his ducks in a row or get him some help. Ok that is all I have to say!!! The Docs are great and terrific surgeons and I am putting my life in their hands and well God will be there too!!!!
Have not met him yet, i am going to his seminar on May 21. Everyone in his office has been as nice as possible to me.

I met Dr. Strickland and Dr. Givens yesterday. I love both of them, they talked like we were real people, not oddities. They went into detail about the surgery and any help they could provide. I spoke with Diane that handles all the insurance this morning, and she was wonderful! Very helpful and very nice. Now just waiting on appt. with pcp for referral!

I went for my first visit today, and I really liked Dr. Strickland. He was very nice, and told me that he thought that I would be a good candidate for surgery. I was really impressed that he had a scale large enough to weigh me. He told me about the procedure and the incision. I felt very comfortable with him. Now I have to wait to see what insurance says. He was impressed with all the work that i had done so far. Such as getting all the letters of recommendation, and medical records together.

Dr. Stricklands office said that they were not even going to try to appeal the decision of CIGNA because it had such a specific exclusion against gastric bypass surgery. Thier advice was to get in touch with Walter Lindstrom.

I had the surgery on 10/08/02 and I love Dr. Strickland. He acts like I am the only patient that he has. He takes all the time in the world with me answering my questions. He is a wonderful caring doctor that actually seems to love what he does. He treats you as though you were his only patient and not a outsider as most doctors do. He is wonderful!!
I first met Dr. Stricland and his staff over 2 years ago, at my first appointment with him. I was very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. He seemed to really care for us obese people. I lost touch with his office for a bit while I was figthting the famous insurance battle. My hubby changed jobs and got insurance that covered my surgery, thats when I called Dr. Strickland back. He was a nice and friendly as I remember, and I was so impressed that his bypass program had come so far! When I first started seeing hium there was no support group. Now their is! Everything is so structured, and everyone knows who does what in the office. It is amazing how organized everyone is!! I think on a scale of 1 to 10, Dr S would get a 10 from me. He is a competent professional with an awesome personality and "bedside manner" it is not often you find both qualities in a Doctor!!! I would rate the opffice staff a 8, reason being you always have to wait FOREVER to get to see the doctor.
I went to the "information" session yesterday. He is what everyone says... WONDERFUL. I have not met with him one on one, but will do so June 13th and I cant wait!
got an update...
I have will see him on 05-30-02!!!! YIPEEE!
05-30-02 saw strickland today. he answered all my questions. I am now more ready than ever!
I have only met Dr. Strickland at his information session last July (2001). I was very impressed with his knowledge and willingness to explain.. to try and answer everyone's questions. He ven had a post opt patient meet with us and share her experiences. I think I will be very pleased with him.
On April 22, 2002 I attended my first Support Group meeting even though I haven't had my first consult. This group meets every month and people attend from all over the state, both pre and post opters. I am posting this for those of you who may be looking for or considering a surgeon. Dr. Strickland always tells patients that after surgery, you are his for life... and he truly means it. His deep-seated care of his patients is evident in that he and his staff attend the support group meeting, stay till all are gone, and answer any questions from new folks. As s busy surgeon with many of us clamoring for his time, he makes time, as does his staff, to continue to provide supportive aftercare for his patients. Before you make your final decision on whose hands to place your future in, please meet with Dr. Strickland or Dr. Givens first.
