Dr. Alex Gandsas, Bariatric Surgeon
Alex Gandsas, MD, MBA, is the Director of Anne Arundel Medical Center’s (AAMC) Weight Loss and Metabolic Surgery Program, Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program and the Director of the Bariatrics Fellowship Program. He also serves as the President of the Maryland Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
Dr. Gandsas earned his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Argentina and obtained his master’s degree in business and administration from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Following his general surgery residency in Michigan, Dr. Gandsas completed fellowships in Advanced Laparoscopy and Laparoscopic Bariatrics surgery at prestigious Duke University Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Prior to joining AAMC, Dr. Gandsas worked at the School of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Medicine Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) where he was a professor and served as chair of the Department of Surgery, Program Director of the UMDNJ SOM General Surgery Residency Program and Chief of Surgery at Kennedy University Hospital in Stratford, New Jersey. Dr. Gandsas also served as division chief of Bariatrics & Minimally Invasive Surgery at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore and an associate professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
As an expert in his field, Dr. Alex Gandsas published numerous scientific articles in general surgery, surgical education and telemedicine. Currently, his research efforts focus on obesity surgery, as well as the use of emerging technologies in minimally invasive surgery, telemedicine and surgical education. Dr. Gandsas is a board-certified surgeon and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is actively involved in the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (SLS).

Dr. Gandsas personally performs more than 400 bariatric cases annually, ranging from standard procedures, such as the Sleeve Gastrectomy and Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, to more complex procedures such as revision of failed sleeve, revision for weight regain and one-anastomosis gastric bypass (aka “mini” gastric bypass).
All surgeries with Dr. Gandsas are performed at the Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Maryland. This is an accredited center through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP).
