When I walked in his office there he stood at the counter talking with the receptionist and actually addressed me as a person. My experience with most doctors is you never see them until they walk into the examining room, and they never are seen in the waiting room. I took a friend with me and she started asking questions while I filled out paperwork and listened. He answered every question in detailed and has a GREAT sense of humor. He asked me lots of questions and I sensed he wanted to know how I felt about my decision. I feel very comfortable in his hands and I know he has the experience to do an excellent job. Will update more after surgery.
I found Dr Heap to be a very special person! He cares a great deal about his patients. He does not hold any details out, very straight forward, and I assume that is what some people do not like. They want the details sugar coated. I trusted him with my life, and he gave me a new beginning! I would highly recommend Dr Heap to anyone!!
Dr Heap was wonderfull he has a great way of making you feel comfortable. My impression of him only got better during my surgical consult. He is very upfront about everything and listened and answered all my questions in a way that is easy to understand and then went on to fill in all the details. The office staff were wonderfull they were very nice and helpfull. So far the only thing that I didn't like was that his office smelled like someone had been smoking just outside. He made a distinct point of addressing the risks of the surgery. I would rate him as excelent overall so far.
Dr.Heap is a get to guy with a quirky sense of humor.
Brisk, not afraid to touch fat people, nice.
Has not altered.
Nice Efficient.
That he may stop doing the surgeries.
That his personality is blunt, what you see is what you get. A very experienced surgeon who cares.
No
Yes fully even gave us his statistics of death.
surgical competenece
I liked Dr Heap, He wasnt one of these doctors who think their better than you. He treated me like he and I were on the same level. Like he puts his pants on the same way I do, ONE LEG AT A TIME. I like that, I dont care if your skinny, fat, rich, poor, construction worker, doctor, white, black, We are all the same! =*)(thats just my opinion)
He sat down as soon as he walked in and said, "so what can I do for you?" At first I thought well you should know why Im here. But then I realized thats just it, what did I want him to do for me?. Like he was interviewing me. At first I didnt really feel comfortable with that approach. But the more I talked the more I realized it was an interview for me and him. He wanted to know how much I knew and if I had done my homework.
He listened to all my questions and concerns, he did get excited over some issues, in "excited" I mean that he just knew his stuff. And he seemed very passionate about it. He explained the risk and even joked alittle with me about being skinny after the surgery.
I had done so much research on this surgery that I walked in there with two pages of questions and concerns and never read any of his patients profiles before hand. And he answered everyone of them with no problem. Never cut me off once! Infact Im the one with that problem. (oops)
Everyone says that you must walk in there educated so that Dr Heap knows that youve done your homework. Im glad i did my homework, because I can see him telling me, "well come back to me when youve learned some things". But thats just because he cares and wants you to know what your getting into. I really like Dr Heap, as if you couldnt tell <grin>.
06-2004 No instructions after surgery, you better be good at taking care of yourself and know what to do for yourself. Because after the surgery you are on your own! You would think there were some kind of instructions or some kind of a plan that he would give.Nope
Dr. Adrian Heap is an angel. What he lacks in bedside manner he makes up for three fold with his knowledge and passion. By lacking in bedside manner, he's very quick in his approach to questions. He's very stoic. He's a consumate professional. You get what you give out of an encounter with Dr. Heap. If you educate yourself, ask intelligent questions and take an active part in your surgery/recovery he's there with you all the way. He's dedicated to helping people lose weight and regain their lives. My first impression of him was of a warm, caring and highly intelligent man. My impression of him changed and evolved in that he was there at my bedside, holding my hand, taking me each step of the way. My opinion of him has only increased and grown positively. He's very attentive, always. Friday evening, Sunday morning, Tuesday afternoon, he's always around and always there to make sure you're doing well. He insists on a very regimented aftercare program of vitamins, eating sensibly and checking in with him via follow up appointments. He's very steadfast about communicating with your primary care doctor and any other doctor you encounter.
The doctors out in general socieity (i.e., doctors who are not weight loss surgeons) are not familiar with our new anatomy and can do things that are deadly and very dangerous without proper education. Dr. Heap wants to make sure that no doctor touches us after he's surgically altered us without his blessing and approval.
I had a bowel obstruction 2 1/2 years after my BPD/DS and Doctor Heap was on the phone with me as well as every doctor who came in contact with me making sure they didn't injur me further. This was all while he was vacationing with his family in Chicago. He's an amazing man and has a stellar track record. His surgery is among the very best in the country. He's very competent, he's very involved and not content until you feel, personally, that you are a success.
I don't remember my first impression of him, but I do know I ended up really liking him alot. When I went in for my initial consultation, he spent about 2 hours answering my questions. My endocrinologist highly recommended him and since I trust her, I went with it. The day before my surgery I met with him again and told him all my fears and concerns and he addressed them all. He did not make me feel "small". I told him I was very afraid of the pain, so he made sure the anesthesiologist gave me a spinal etc.
He does expect you to do your homework and know about the different procedures. He does not spend a lot of time teaching all that. He does make sure that you talk to other patients and goes out of the way to introduce you to them and allow you a chance to ask them questions and all of his patients seem to be willing to share, which is nice. I really liked him, and he endeared him self to me even more when he talked about how he was looking forward to his son coming home for the weekend ( a family man). He is very caring and since I am three weeks out and have lost abouat 30 pounds, I must figure he knows what he is doing!! I highly recommend him!
Dr. Heap is a very caring surgeon. I live an hour from his office so he always tells me to call if I need anything but is always willing to see me if I want to come in. Any time that I have a question he always gets on the phone to talk to me. He never makes me feel like he's rushed. His office staff is very friendly and ready to answer any questions that I may have.
