Minimally invasive technology has extended into the diagnostic testing for some breast diseases. “Because most breast biopsies are negative for cancer, we have a method to minimize the disfigurement and pain of this surgery,” explains Dr. Hausmann. He uses a specialized biopsy probe called a “Mammotome” and ultrasonic guidance to perform such biopsies in his office rather than a hospital. This eliminates much loss of time and travel for the patient not to mention the minimal pain that is associated with this method to obtain tissue for diagnosis. Dr. Hausmann adds, “We hope to utilize such minimally invasive techniques to even treat selected cancers in the future.”
