Gintaras Antanavicius, MD earned his medical degree from Vilnius University Medical School. He completed his residency in general surgery at Temple University in 2005, where he was awarded The Lester A. Dunmire Award for his clinical and scholarly achievements. He completed his fellowship in minimally invasive bariatric surgery at the University of Minnesota in 2008.
Dr. Gintaras Antanavicius (known as Dr. G) is a board certified, fellowship trained and highly experienced bariatric – metabolic surgeon. He has performed over 1700 bariatric operations. He specializes in advanced laparoscopic and complex robotic bariatric surgery including The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, vertical sleeve gastrectomy and revisional surgery. New technologies and techniques, such as endoscopic incisionless procedures and new Xi robotic system applications, are routine additions to his broad surgical repertoire.
“Treat your patient like you would want your mother to be treated,” Dr. Antanavicius tells his students, residents and fellows. He currently serves as program director of the Bariatric Fellowship at Abington –Jefferson Health. Additionally, he is an assistant professor of surgery at Temple University School of Medicine and clinical assistant professor at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Throughout his career, he has received multiple bariatric fellowship grants to continue his work and research. Dr. Antanavicius has been invited to present his research findings at more than 20 medical conferences and events.
He has co-authored over 40 peer reviewed papers and chapters within the medical field, covering topics such as high risk surgical patients, internal hernias during pregnancy after gastric bypass surgery, laparoscopic surgery and complications in the morbidly obese population undergoing biliopancreatic diversion, robotic duodenal switch results and more. He is particularly interested in the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery, especially DM resolution after surgery.
He is an involved member of the O.R. Block Time Committee, Robotic Surgery Committee, Department of Surgery Residency Advisory Committee and the Graduate Medical Education Committee at Abington –Jefferson Health. He is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeon’s Educational Resources Committee.
He is fluent in English, Lithuanian and Russian.
