Dr. Alejandro López-Ortega is the founder and Medical Director of ALO Bariatrics and a highly experienced bariatric, metabolic, general, and robotic surgeon with more than 20 years of surgical experience.
Throughout his career, Dr. López has focused on advanced minimally invasive surgery and the treatment of obesity and metabolic disease. He has extensive experience performing primary and complex revisional bariatric procedures and has participated in more than 20,000 bariatric procedures with his surgical team.
Dr. López earned his medical degree from the University of Guadalajara and completed his surgical training at Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente, IMSS, in Guadalajara. His training also includes experience at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where he received additional exposure to advanced surgical techniques.
He is also trained and certified in da Vinci robotic surgery, expanding his expertise in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques.
Dr. López’s professional credentials and affiliations include:
His continuing education and professional involvement reflect his commitment to advances in bariatric, metabolic, minimally invasive, and robotic surgery.
Dr. López believes that successful bariatric surgery begins with understanding that every patient is different. Medical history, BMI, metabolic conditions, previous surgeries, lifestyle, and long-term goals all play a role in determining the most appropriate treatment.
His approach emphasizes personalized surgical planning rather than a one-size-fits-all procedure.
Dr. López performs a comprehensive range of bariatric and metabolic procedures, including:
He has particular experience evaluating patients who have experienced weight regain, insufficient weight loss, gastroesophageal reflux, or complications following previous bariatric surgery.
Depending on the patient’s anatomy and medical needs, revisional options may include gastric band conversion, sleeve-to-bypass, sleeve-to-SADI-S, sleeve-to-Duodenal Switch, sleeve-to-OAGB, and revision of a previous gastric bypass.
For Dr. López, bariatric surgery is not simply about losing weight. It is about treating obesity as a chronic disease and helping patients improve their overall health and quality of life.
Metabolic and bariatric surgery can provide significant improvement in obesity-related conditions such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, joint problems, and other metabolic conditions.
Patient education is an important part of his approach. Dr. López believes patients should understand their surgical options, expected outcomes, potential risks, nutritional requirements, and the lifestyle changes required after surgery before making their decision.
One of Dr. López’s areas of particular expertise is revisional bariatric surgery.
Patients may seek revision after a previous gastric sleeve, gastric bypass, gastric band, or other bariatric procedure because of weight regain, inadequate weight loss, reflux, anatomical problems, or other complications.
Revision surgery can be considerably more complex than a primary bariatric procedure. Dr. López evaluates each patient’s previous surgery, anatomy, symptoms, weight history, and metabolic goals to determine whether revision is appropriate and which surgical strategy offers the best balance of effectiveness and safety.
Dr. López performs bariatric surgery through ALO Bariatrics in:
Tijuana, Mexico
Guadalajara, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
These locations allow ALO Bariatrics to care for patients traveling from throughout Mexico as well as international patients from the United States, Canada, and other countries.
ALO Bariatrics coordinates the surgical experience from preoperative evaluation through surgery and postoperative follow-up, with programs that may include hospital care, preoperative testing, local transportation, accommodations, nutritional guidance, and long-term follow-up depending on the location and selected program.
“I treat every patient with the same respect, dignity, and attention I would want for a member of my own family. Bariatric surgery is not only about weight loss—it is about helping patients achieve better health and a better quality of life.”
— Dr. Alejandro López
Dr. López and the ALO Bariatrics team believe that surgery is only one part of the patient’s journey. Education, nutrition, lifestyle changes, communication, and continued postoperative support are essential components of long-term success.
Patients considering bariatric surgery or revision surgery can contact ALO Bariatrics to have their medical history reviewed and learn which treatment options may be appropriate for them.
